Although I don't mean to insult some of you out there I have to say this; Most of you don't actually understand music as an art. Most of you just don't get James Taylor's music in general. He is one of those musicians that unless you play guitar and/or piano you will never truly understand. Appreciate all you want but if you didn't take a single fucking second out of your day to attempt to learn some of these songs you are forever lost to the mediocrity of a non-laid life. James Taylor = Puss
Taylor's best renditions of this occurred during this time period, for two reasons - the quality of his voice then, and the emotional way that he employed it.
The downer of this one is the synth (but it lays far back enough to keep from being ruinous). The upside are the painful "Oh"s at the beginning of the choruses, that sound like they're being emitted by someone who truly is in emotional pain at the moment.
I have always loved this song!! Such beauty in this song and yet so much pain as well. This song always brings tears streaming down my face everytime when I hear this song. Not only for the meaning of this song but also for the way I can relate to the lyrics in this song about people I have loved and lost in this life. Such a goreous song from such a talented artist. I miss the times of this music as well. Such a time that can never be matched for sure!! Phenomenal indeed!! <3
It's kind of weird that people are screaming. An old review from Rolling Stone made the following apt observation: "As a general proposition, what the artist stands for, what his view of life is, correlates with the phenomenon he engenders. In James' case, there is an uneasy discrepancy between the two. The Rolling Stones in their flamboyance can excite mass appeal; when James does, something has gone askew. James' career is the lie to his art ..." (The critic doesn't blame JT; he blames us.)
@jrmrinaz I have heard that to be the truth from several people who were into James Taylor during the 60-70s. They all said the same thing and it makes the most sense to me. Without James Taylor himself telling us that, its still speculation though. But as far as I can tell it is true. It makes sense when u listen to the lyrics closely.
He met Suzanne in rehab and they became REALLY close. "The plans they made put an end to you"= When she found out they were gonna commit her she commited suicide. He was in rehab for Heroin. "bodys achin"= withdraw from heroin. Get it?

It's a shame people do not REALLY LISTEN to the words of songs!!This song was against Vietnam BU this the same for Afghanistan or Iraq (Bring our boys HOME)
The song is about Suzanne Schnerr, a girl he met when he was a member of The Flying Machine, who committed suicide. The phrase "help me make a stand" is about his battle with heroin addiction. This is not about Vietnam.
its kinda strange that something so beautiful like this song can come from something so horrible as in a tragedy like that..then again..music is the one and only things that has always made sense in this world
One of the best songs ever written for sure. His voice is so genuine, and you can tell he means what he's saying. They say, "When you're singing, there's no reason to open your mouth unless you're telling a story" You can tell he is
Hey I'm right there with you, I was born in 1990 and I absolutely love this song. It is so beautiful! I can thank Remember the Titans for first getting me to listen to 70's music including this song. This is one of my moms and my favorite songs of all-time!
When I saw him he said this song was about his wife who he was with for many years but was afraid of flying so never came on tour with him, and then when he had his birthday or something years later his manager told her it would be a great surprise so she flew out to surprise him and her plane crashed. Is that susan?
Heard him talking about this song on radio. Was not his wife but a girl he knew who committed suicide. They delayed telling him till he'd finished recording some tracks in London, Very sad story and one hell of a song.
Yeah, I mean hes signing about his female lover, that certainly reeks of homosexualtiy.... Maybe you should stop playing counterstrike or whatever the hell you do that makes you think that calling stuff "gay" is acceptable and realize that music started prior to the last 10 years. And just as an fyi, Im 26 and my main preference in music is punk rock and metal.
Such a beautiful song, its down to earth and very spiritual - reminds me of my life and my sweet, sweet grandmother, that I lost a long time ago when I was a child
I was 13 Y.O. when this song came out. I felt in love with right away. It seems to me I was the only one at school who did... Was this song more aimed to adults?

All good art is subjective. Hence, Taylor may have wrote this song with an intention, but the listener is free to make their own interpretation.
