dunno, you assume anyone had a compatible spare item to lend, who can tell, i DO know it wasnt as damp that weekend as it was last weekend at SPR, it was the 76/77 heatwave years, it must have been sea spray or seaweed he had picked up en-route!
I think you're taking it wrong. There was some confusion at the line. They talk about "twenty seconds" being up and get a red light for that or the voice over says the design of Don's car tripped the light. I do remember Don use to run an offset frontend where one wheel was around six inches out in front of the other. It was to break the beams that much sooner. Don is a true racer and I think he was upset he didn't get a head up race out of it. He is still the greatest there ever was or will be.
Skilton won by a big holeshot. Basically, Skilton was faster off the line by a least 0.34 seconds (which is the difference between the two times). Remember that the winner is the first person across the line, and not the quickest/fastest!
I first saw Don Garlits at Cayuga Ontario, it ended up raining and all the other teams quickly put there cars away or covered them and disappeared. Garlits had his Small Trailer and left the car in the rain just covering the engine and the drivers compartment. Garlits stood in the back of the trailer inviting people in out of the rain and chatted with them for hours. Seeing this, I knew the man had "Class"!!
Dickie Davies right at the end ....this must surely be ITV's "World of Sport"?!! I remember when they used to show a bit of drag racing (all too rare!) ....in the UK, catch both FIA European and NHRA Powerade series on Five now, but this old stuff is extra cool!
I disagree self professed sage - just because the teams are more professional doesn't make it any less impressive or lacking spirit. I spend a lot of time in the pits at the pod talking to the drivers and know this for certain. Roll on the finals next week.
The old nitro cars sound amazing. You can actually hear them rev the engine (4:26), as opposed to the more or less instantaneous full throttle that today's cars are capable of.
garlits had magneto problems from day 1, he wouldnt have gotten near pete crane under the circumstances, i was there.....

Obviously you've never been double bulbed.

In the semis how come Crane manages to run a 6.03 against Skilton's 6.37 and still lose by several car lengths?

0.34 would be one BIG holeshot, which isn't what the video shows.

Shame Garlits lost, we secretly wanted him to win I know but ggod for pete to get the 5 second run.
As for me I could only make the Saturday practice but got Big Daddy to sign my copy of King of the Dragsters.
Thanks for posting as I would have loved to have been there

Great stuff. Drag racing as it should be. Todays drag racing has not got the same feel..the raw spirit has gone!
