  • I make 0 an hour..volunteer

  • if your not wearing full PPE and SCBA get the hell off the fire ground you dont need to be breathing in all that nasty smoke

  • 13 dollars a fucking hour to go INTO the fire? Wow.. My respect for you guys just went way up.

  • @Thumper17 i make 10.75 in illinois! PART TIME!!!! no health insurance, no pension

  • THERE IS NO PAY

THIS KIND OF WORK CAN NOT BE PAYED FOR

these pepole are fuckin Heroes .

HEROES. MY HATS OFF TO YOU GUYS ....ALL THE WAY FROM PHILA PA .... SEMPER FI .... carry on .......

  • Where are the tactics?? Firefighters going into a basement with no egress... firefighters on the scene with no gear... No building is worth a life. I understand money is tight, these men have to do with what they have and stick together but my god!!! Be safe brothers!!

  • whats the pay like

  • @MrLoudmouthspeaker 24 on, 48 off, and approximately 13.00 dollars an hour.......

  • @mabas21 thats about $ 12 dollars australian... that seems pretty low wages..

  • @MrLoudmouthspeaker It is very low.

  • @mabas21 More than what i make. At either of my jobs.

  • At 3:52 there looks to be something in the window. I do not know if it is a Firefighter or not.

  • F@@@ing politicians.... Yes, there are alot of things wrong with this call... But like others have stated, im not going to bash them. Stay safe brothers....

  • gary,indiana?

  • 3:08...That wasn't a vent fan was it?

  • i dont understand what purpose the people without any turnout gear are serving at this fire scene.

  • What the hell Layoffs?....Mayor wants his city to burn down?......too many bullets and not enough guns!.......glad I don`t live there......Mayor would let me live with HIM.......Obviously money is going in the WRONG direction, sounds like......I bet the BIG WIGS get paid good money!

  • @jeepers2655 4 done and 31 to go by 1-1-11. Happy new year! Oh btw, the city is down to 2 trucks as of an hour ago. One of their newer trucks lost a tire going to a fire, like it fell of while driving

  • Can't Gary buy it's firefighters any gear.

  • Im soo happy im not a ff here!

  • @NASCARRELIC Retired I guess you could say, now I just record the incidents

  • okay around here that fir e would have been under control in half the time they took...its rediculous that there is lik 5 packed and geared guys walking around and atleast 9 or 10 firefighters in street clothes.....maybe if you would have members show up in gear or....WEAR there gear shit woulda got done

  • @kofok2 good for you man each place has its own way of doing things and if you dont like the way they do it DONT COMMENT

  • I like how for half the video there were only three guys with packs on and I'm pretty sure they skipped parts so I'm guessing it was longer then 5 minutes. They had more able guys that could of been doing things. Then crawling through a basement window just seems like a good way to get someone killed. also they had guys crawling on to the roof with no heeler nor roof ladder or a hose line in case the got in trouble. I'm not trying to critisize, just trying to point out things to think about.

  • I have to give it to them for being there even though like some say the public not being grateful. When people see a fire they think it is easy just to show up and start throwing water on it. I know we have the same problem.

  • if your a firefighter, and your on the scene of a fire, wear your full PPE. You should all be embarrased. Noone, not even the chief should be in street clothes

  • I think they "overcooked" some bread trying to make toast.

  • Part 2 of 2- Any signs of a "backdraft" in this vid??? appears to be to me . Yet not a concern of one, nothing negative to the dept. as we all have different S.O.P's but i feel in most cases as this one the O.I.C would have pulled everyone out and and regroup after an assessment, long before the FF went down

  • with due respect ....Why are there FF's on the fireground without "full" turn out gear" and some that have turnout gear have NO scba, (lines on the ground everyone should be packed up" in my opinion (* pump operators)

  • Was the FF that went down the same FF that crawled in through the basement window? If so, dose anyone know how if he extricated himself or was he helped out. That was nothing shorth of a guttsy aggresive fire attack in the basement. Always tough to tell what was going on from a 10 minute video. I assume FF was ok in the end. Anyone out there with more info on this fire willing to share would be great.

Regards, B Smith Trng Capt. CCCFPD

  • bigbadredsox are you serious ? Gary threatening to close Fire Stations also? WHat kind of lay offs are they having?

  • The official recommendation that came from the company that evaluated the city on how to operate more efficiently recommended we shut down 5 firehouses and lay off 54 firemen

  • @mabas21 wait wait, operate more efficiently with LESS fireman? They do know it takes like 6 guys per line right? Operate efficiently means more hands, not less so the big wigs can get more money in their pockets. I always found it funny that politicians attack education and civil service jobs to balance the budget, but not cut their 6-8 figure a year job.

  • I wasnt there so im not going to bash them. But I see alot of bad stuff going on here.

  • @sfire54 At or around the 52 second mark you can see something that makes your hair stand on end. The basement was untennable. Even if someone was trapped in the basement, they could not have survived and would have been dead already when ingress was made through a HALF WINDOW! I agree, a search was called for on the first floor. However, sending someone into the confined basement, through a half window, was egregious. Sorry mabas21, you posted it for all to comment on, and this is honest talk.

  • i swear i have seen more house fires in Gary Indiana then anywhere else in the country. Maybe the jacksons should move back to pump money into the area or something....

also putting a lot of lives at risk

  • The guys at GFD are having a very rough time. Station closings, layoffs, no money for new equipment or training and an ungrateful public.

Despite all this, they still come running when called and they still kick ass!! My hat is off to them!

  • Most the armchair quarter backs have no clue and even when told they don't care. All they want to do is trash talk and bad mouth one of the most aggressive and professional departments I have had the pleasure of filming. Thank you for the comment.

  • @mabas21 kofok2 is a good point on what your saying about armchair quarter backs blabbin there lips ......hope you didnt mind me sticking my 2 cents worth in and telling him 2 shut up :)

  • @bigbadredsox Sounds like whats happening in Rochester, NY. Gov. Patterson Is shutting down almost half of the Dept's And its leading to a huge problem.

  • what a crazy dept.

  • there is like 10 guys outside with no gear, and 3 inside whit gear, ??? one hose, smoke vetilation?. I am not a firefighter, i work as a EMT at the swedish ambulance service, but this is not how it is done i sweden... maybe other tactics

  • thats cuz sweds are pussies

  • i like how they pulled him out and just left him there...i hope i never work with people like that....isn't the MJs old house

  • From my understanding the Firefighter stated he was o.k., he was transported as a precaution due to over heating in the fire. He repeatedly stated he was fine and for the guys to go on with working the scene. I understand how this would look bad though, and this is not Jacksons house. Thats at 2300 Jackson..... Go figure

  • Why would you go into a confined space like a crawl space for a fire risk a little for a little the place looks like a over 80% damaged why not cut a few holes above the crawl space and use a cellar nozzle .

Again it easy to Monday night quarterback this but again risk a little for a little risk a lot for a lot!

  • This video is now on FE.

And sideshow your making excuses. If you have gear wear it.

And no matter what..WTF are you doing sending a man through the basement window..ITS BS..he could barelly get in then he gets into trouble and they have to tug him out.

NO EXCUSES. For a career dept this should not have happend. I dont care if your fires every day we have tactics use them.

No need for a LODD over stupidity

  • Very unsafe they are being, noturnout gear,no SCBA not cool man thats how people get hurt or dead.

  • I'm a bit concerned that there are people operating on the fireground (within the collapse zone) not wearing PPE.

    Stay Safe.

  • If there had been a true flashover there would be dead firefighters, not overheated firefighters. Maybe rollover, but no flash.

  • Towards the end of the video, you can see it "breathing". That was great camera work catching that. Isn't flashover when O2 is let into a fire that is suffocating? With open windows, that fire wasn't starving for air.

  • A backdraft occurs when O2 is let into a suffocating fire causing an explosive mixture of incomplete combustion and oxygen. Flashover is when all the objects and gases in a room reach ignition temperature and all of it "flashes" into flame and the room is then completely filled with fire.

  • @bapabob : What youre talking about is a backdraft. A flashover is when the temperature reaches a certain point, everything in the fire room combusts, which pretty much lights the whole room off.

  • @ClintonHeightsFire People have watched too many damn movies and think that they know what it is all about... ya know?

  • there are FF's in the house, with lines stretched to the door, not charged, I don't hear a pump running, yeah there is problems here

  • At the 20 second mark you can see a charged line in the front door, there is also a second line in the basement. At 43 seconds a third line that is not charged is brought in. You have to remember, there is the rear that is unseen in the video and the other side. I honestly think there were 4-5 lines pulled at this fire. I would also like to add, I wasn't really near the engines, (hate to be anywhere I will be in the way) so you wouldn't hear them

  • We have been trained for RIT and have equip. for it but sometimes the manpower is not avail.

  • To the comment about the engineers fighting fire... they would love to but have you seen some of our equipment? They need to be near our archaic rigs to monitor for problems. ie: I ride on a 1990 Pierce and that is our assigned rig not a spare. Don't even get started with what they let the garage do for maintenance.

  • were is the RIT team at on this fire do you guys have no RIT team at any fire's in your city

  • I have to check into that, to be honest. R.I.T is a very important factor on fires and do agree 100%. If GFD does not have R.I.T implimented maybe the funding will be available someday for the training. If any of the firefighters got hurt seriously or worse I would be a basket case.

  • Anyone notice the smoke being pulled back into the stucture through the basement window and back out after about 7:30 and on?

  • Yes I did. Changing smoke movement like that could be a red flag.

  • did u ever just stop and think, hey these guys do amazing with what they have. Keep fightn GFD

  • Hey you guys, quit fighting with each other!!! FYI the firefighter that went down is my older bro. He was working off a bowl of cereal that was worked off in the fire he put out earlier that day, so he was drained! I already told him about his eating habits, but maybe after this he'll finally take to heart what Im saying. I was over his house earlier today, and take it from me he is just fine!!! Thanks for the concern tho fellow tubies!!! : ) ~4691~

  • I'll put GFD up against any of these dudes criticizing them and i bet any money Gary comes out on top. they put out some nasty fires in a ridiculously short time and with little manpower. They give them just enough personnel to have somewhat of a crew. this is a rare occurrence for them, you guys should know if the room flashes it would have been very difficult for anyone to get to that crew, so bite your tongue and show respect. Ed has plenty of vids showing Indiana's finest

  • It didn't look like they had a personnel problem to me. There was at least five guys in no ppe. even if they are engineers they still can fight fire and if there not on duty they shouldn't have been their because if they get hurt off duty there screwed.

  • Staffing wasn't the problem here, the fire got into the walls and traveled to the first and second floors, there was also a flashover in the basement that is not seen in the video. It could have been 100 times worse than an overheated firefighter. Also we have to keep in mind, this guy had his ass handed to himself at a fire about two hours before this one, no joke. I also stated in a previous comment, I had a GFD shirt on and I am not a Gary employee...... Just a huge fan

  • First of all I have to thank Herndblr. Your comment was great about making quick comments. Everyone gets on youtube and all they see is what is recorded. If you were not there you should really shut your mouth. There was never a mayday call at anytime. If you were not there dont make them stupid comment as if you were on the scene. The firefighter was over heated. He is ok and will return his next work day. There are some guys standing outside that are not on duty. Dont be so quick to criticize

  • You didn't know that all these guys are 100% mistake free on the job and have never done wrong at anything in their lives. They are clueless and have no buisness making the comments they do. I was there wearing a GFD shirt and I was on the phone also, maybe I should have been criticized also

  • I enjoy your videos but I believe your comments are reckless. I have never stated that I am 100% mistake free becaus I am not. But guess what, my crew understands what I exppect of them on every type of call, and none of this would have been tolerated! This should be used as a training tool not a forum to criticize. Nothing more nothing less. Right wrong or indifferent when you put these things on the internet people will criticize, if you do not like it then don't post it! Keep up the good work

  • No one is quick to criticize as you put it, this video shows what is wrong across America in the way we figth fires. It makes no difference if this member never called a MAYDAY, he was in obvious trouble and from the 10 minutes of tape shot here there appears to be some fundamental mistakes that are being made. people should learn from this and nothing else. I am not being crittical of anyone just making an observation. We have all put ourselves in a position that may be a little hairy.

  • The main problem is people do not focus on the big issues, they focus on assumptions, such as "everyone that is in an FD shirt is on duty" or anything like that. Just stick to the facts and everyone will be better off. Yes, this video could be used for training, but again, one needs to stick to the facts that are presented and not assume why dude X was standing here or not doing anything. All this aside, our brother FF was pulled out to safety and is living to fight another day.

  • If all the guys standing around with their hands in their pockets, engineers or not, had their gear on with SCBA, they would have had a RIT, at not another nickel costed to the city. These guys see alot of fire, but so did Charleston. Not an excuse. Get it together before someone gets really hurt.

  • unreal....you have a brother trapped and guys are outside with no gear on another guy just wandering around in no hurray! I know these guys take a beating on a regular basis, but this is very unsafe! I don't know what to say! Thank God the member is ok.

  • For your information brother firefighters got him to the window and got him out!

  • Thank god hes ok.

DO THESE GUYS KNOW HOW TO SHUT OFF A PASS ALARM????

  • Great footage Ed! Hope the FFs are ok. Wonder if GFD will evaluate having EMS on standby now, or do they not have the resources to do that?

  • Sounds lIke a Great Idea...Only Problem is that cost's Money! The Mayor is a Jerkoff & Like to Shave the Budget & Put Lives at Risk

  • I'd say so if you can't even put an ambo on the scene to protect your employees!

  • I counted 8 people operating on the exterior w/o any PPE, & 2 others in bunker gear w/o SCBAs. I heard guys hacking as they stood in smoke w/o gear & I'm pretty sure the white shirt had a rag in his hand for resp. protection? Maybe if the FF outside on his cellphone in his FD t-shirt and the rest of the outside crew would've geared up they could've lightened the workload on thier brother firefighter and this mayday could've been avoided? Glad all went home, hope some lessons are learned.

  • Why is everyone always so quick to armchair quarterback fires? Yea, they were not in gear, but were you there? Looked like atleast 1 was an engineer, how many engineers do you know that gear up at a fire?

  • I agree, it always happens. It's funny, the guy on the cell phone isn't even on duty. With a fire like this, do you really think a firefighter has time to be on the phone....

  • Yea, I didn't see a guy on the phone, but then again, I wasn't watching for that. And no, but if someone on scene was on the phone, it had to be one damn important phone call!!

  • Corona 1236 You are 100% right. My second thought is..... why was the FF crawling through the basement window. Where was his escape route? A house is not worth the risk. Sorry herndblr, I cannot accept the excuses.

  • Glad they are ok!

  • Damn scary shit. It wasn`t a "flashy, big flame fire" those are the ones that kill our brothers. I hope the brothers relax, chill a bit, get better and get back at "it". We in EMS are sometimes criticized for "standing around" at these fire scenes. We not only provide rehab, but in situations as this, we`re there if anyone is injured. Great video Ed.

  • Hope the brother is OK. Nice speedy response by EMS.Good thing it wasn't critical.

  • hope those firefighters make a full & speedy recovery~

  • Same here.
