I personally think it's better we don't see his face because then you don't judge him on how deformed he is in terms of how other versions are deformed but you just soak up all the raw emotion and pain of these final moments of the man we all love
No matter how many times I watch this verison of The Phantom of the Opera, I'll always be unable to hold back the tears when I see Erik's death. The relationship between him and his father is so strong that when Erik urged his father to shoot him, he was able to. I just wish that someone as beautiful and unique as Erik would love me and understand that his looks do not matter to me, it's his soul. It is this movie that has taught me to respect others even if they're a bit different.
You are totally right, it's nearly like the french fairy tale: The Beauty and the Beast
Sadly most people don't notice nowadays that there are people that don't have a lot beauty from the outside, therefore from the inside so meaning their character, certain talents or cleverness. Or like Cyrano de Bergerac who lived in 15th century in France, go in Wikipedia. Or the movie Darkman, just more brutal. you can see, some stories follow but not exactly the same.
Christine cant make up her mind...she loves Erik...but still wanted to go with Raoul....err Phillipe...but then i guess that's always been the case :P
I don't like this ending. 1) I didn't want it to end and 2) Erik didn't deserve to die that way. At least Christine did something right for once, I guess. I'm glad they didn't show his face. I always end up being disappointed. The only Phantom's face I've ever been scared of is the original 1925 Lon Chaney's Phantom. Now THAT face made me jump. Here the horror is left to the imagination, and i'm fine with that.
Well, I've watched this twice now, and I'll probably watch it again. Love this film!
Okkk From both POV I think Erik is the best phantom but.....Butler is better looking, he just doesnt play the part well...But Adam Storke is my favorite actor so I am 100% for Phillipe, He is just way good loooking and his voice is amazing
This Phantom for some strange reason reminds me of a mix of Willy Wonka from the original music version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and a few of the Doctors from Dr Who. I think it's because he's so charming and ecentric yet deep and hidden within himself with an air of mystery and unkown as well as being unperdicatble and suprising
The end had me in tears as did most of the film v.v Love you Erik!!
I LOVE the look Erik gives Phillipe after rescuing him. Philippe is so grateful to be alive, and Erik just stares him down as if to say, "I didn't do that for YOU, fucker, I did it for HER."
@Queenofbandgeeks In the story of 2004 Erik doesn't die, so the story could be continued with love never dies. Or did I miss something? :)
Anyhow, wonderful movie. Although I didn't understand a word when they were singing. Too bad it's in french. I always skipped these lessons at school....^^
Did anyone else shout Erik's name and start crying when he was shot or is it just me? Erik...That was the saddest POTO ending I've seen yet...I'm still crying...
I cried for this Phantom. Charles Dance was a great Phantom. This is the Phantom I fell in love with, he was so sweet and had every right to kill Philippe. I was hoping he was going to let him fall, but Christine, he wouldn't do that to her, he loved her too much. His love was pure love for Christine. I'm forever a Phantom girl. There is only 2 Phantoms that I have watched and I would never go to them. However, Charles Dance is 1 of my top Phantoms.
Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for uploading this. This is the phantom I fell in love with 20 years ago!!!! And finaly could see him again!! And again I loved him just as much as back then. And hated Christine for being so cruel and blind, hated that blond raoul/philippe/whatever guy and cried in the end and during the duet.
How not to love a man like Erik? So sweet and gentle! And I still find him so terribly handsome!! My crush on his lips remains intact..
I am very much in love with this story. It's amazing. Plus, Maury Yeston's Phantom (not andrew lloyd webber but a musical) has a very similar story! I love it when Christine loves Erik.
For someone who's supposed to be sick, Erik is hearty enough to pick up Christine, run to the roof, and fight Phillipe. That doesn't seem right some how. . .
@CatoftheStorm He was sick because his mind was so depressed and his heart was broken. The mind is capable of fooling the body to believe it is dying and the body will start shutting down but when he heard Christine singing to him, he was able to snap out of it.

...tragedy full of love and compassion, but also full of human mistakes and weaknesses...Now being elder, I understand much more from this story. Having a wonderful loving man by my side. Having a little son... When I realize what Gerard could feel at the moment, my heart stops for a while. When I try to imagine Erik's life and feelings, in fact having no chance for quite normal living (in his times' reality) - I feel tears in my heart...I love THIS version most of all, because it is real...
Thanks very, very much for this film. For the whole film here. I haven't seen it for 10 years. I saw it for the first time almost 20 years ago, when I was 19... It was a shock. I was shivering. It was the first meeting with the story, and with the opera music. Since then many years have passed, but the classical music and a memory of Erik are still with me... I forgot many details of the final scene, until today... and I'm shivering like for the first time. It's just a tragedy...
How come Christine couldn't have just ran up to Erik, hugged him tightly, and pleaded for the police not to harm him??? She could've said something like "he never meant any harm... if only you knew what this man has been through!" But no, she was somewhere else on the rooftop while poor Erik was trying to fend for himself, concluding that he had to nod his head for his father to shoot him! It makes me so mad...
Hate me for it, but I'm happy that it was like Leroux's original novel, and Erik died. Why? Because that's how it's supposed to end. Things aren't as tragic and heartstring-tugging if the misunderstood Phantom doesn't die. :/ That's just my opinion.
This is the first Erik that has some wit about him! And the ending held all the beauty and tragedy of the story itself, which no movie that i have seen has captured. Wonderfully done!
Wow this brings back crazy memories, especially the part where they are walking the staircase at the end and they begin to descend down the staircase.......Wow, that was the part I was looking for. My childhood seems so close, yet so far away.......
And I am mad at Christine did't realize that Erik was THE man. Just because of his face...well, there is nothing wrong with his eyes and mouth so as long as he keeps the mask on who cares about his nose?!
This is the best version of the story. But why is it so sad? :((( I have been in love with Erik since I was a child and it is still so hard for me to watch him die. Life is not fair at all! XD
how i wish I would see a Phantom of the Opera movie with a happy ending. All seem to end with the Phantom dying or in so much despair.
There is a novel 'though, entitled "Phantom of Manhattan" that tells about Christine and Erik having a son. Erik became a successful businessman and lives in a towering building in New York. Now, that's really something! The phantom, who lived in sadness all his life, finally getting the happiness he deserves :D
@XevanescenceXangelX Well, this is it with Leroux, him being a journalist, he writes the book in places like a factual account. He mixes fact and fiction together so well, we cant know the truth..Certainly he based the story on some opera ''legend'' he'd heard about....Anyway, the thing is, we all would really like to believe that ERik REALLY existed wouldnt we.....:)
@XevanescenceXangelX I thought he found a skeleton (in the books epilogue?) which he believed to be Eriks - it still wore the ring which Christine had placed on his finger as she promised( which he had given to her and Raoul as a wedding present)......
@XevanescenceXangelX thank you for pointing that out. I have the book and know that in the book he dies - I was refering to the 2nd book that he is alive. I like to think in all versions he is alive - in this one - he only acts to be dead so he can get away from the police......I love Phantom - such passion - it is not there in guys today...ugh
no worries smellydee - if you love the phantom know that he is not dead - everyone thinks he is :D In the book he does not die, in ALW world he does not die - heck there is a 2nd one of both :D Erik lives on :D woo hoo :D
@lolkittehs34 I don't get it, either. The Charles Dance Phantom is so lovable. Even though he's a wimp, he's lovable. But he asked his father to do it, because he was dying. I still don't get it, otherwise.
If the phantom looked like the Gerald from the 2004 phantom of the opera, I bet you Christine would have still loved him when he took off his mask since he wasn't that hideous...
I hate Christine!! But Teri played her role perfectly, not like Emma Rossum in the musical version 2004. Emma only tried to be seductive, and commercial!
@rayna181 My friend, I think everyone here has right t to express his or her opinion. I'd watched the 2004 version before saying that Emmy acted poorly, and I have reasons for saying so. Can you tell me what the great job is you are talkng about? Singing? at low pitches her voice is bearable, but when come to the higher pitches, well... it was terrible!
@rayna181 Acting? I didnt say she was seductive. I'm saying that she TRIED to be seductive, she failed to do it! She failed to be neither seductive nor innocent. I didnt see any passion when she looked at the Phantom, no jolt when she was in his arm. All I could see was that her mouth were open all the time, Her gaze was foolish,( I guess she was supposed to show she was enthralled, thrilled by the phantom).
@rayna181 You can say that as she is young, what she's done is impressive. But I even cannot agree with you on this matter, because there were, there are so many younger actors and actress who did their job much better. Say Dakota? Say Macaulay Culkin? Well we have different tastes, so there shouldnt be anything such as 'shut up'! That's all, now you can show how great Emmy is.
I love this movie, esp Charles Dance.doesnt matter you dont see his face. But it reminds me of when I was at uni and I had a relationship with a man actually called Erik. I wasnt into Phantom at all then. Then, I watched this with my family and I heard the Phantoms name for the first time. My cheeky little sister stared at me, then burst out laughing.''Erik? Erik/!!!'' she said, and it was a bit of a ''joke '' for a while. I was extremely embarassed.
*sniff* That was so beautiful! Thank you so much for posting this! Thought it wasn't the same story, this version caught all the sensitivy and intelligence of Leroux's original character.
I love this movie so much. I watched this as a little kid and every time I saw it, it affected me.
And now I'm crying, it is a wonderful movie! I never cry at movies, but now... Poor Eric! He was a good man, despite he killed innocent people. What an amazing movie!
True I loved how he had a sense of humor about dying. Erik was all like *shrug* I'm caught. His dad is all like *pulls gun* Do you want me to shoot you? Erik was all like *nod* sure why not?
Christine's all like "Erik! ERIK!" doesn't he wonder how she knows his name? He never told her it, after all...
3:10-3:30 I know its supposed to be sad that he was shot and all but I still thought it was cute/funny how he was all like *shrug* I'm caught now what and his dad's like *gun* want me to shoot you and he's all like *nod* yeah do it! Kept his humor till the end, he did. Wish they would have shown even more sarcasm/humor the harder you laugh the harder you cry after all ;)
I started bawling like a baby when Erik was killed. I couldn't help crying. Its so sad when your favorite character from your favorite movie dies. Heck I would have gone with Erik.
At least this stops Phantom of Manhattan from ever happening, but on the other hand, it stops Phantom of Manhattan from ever happening! It's a blessing and a curse, that Phantom of Manhattan.
It's sad that my favorite phantom movie ends with my favorite movie Erik dieing. I find it interesting that they never show his face. It at least avoids the problem 2004 had (the damn deformity in that movie was a mild sunburn...)
SO SAD!!! poor Erik :( why did she just give him a kiss on forheard like what the hell why didit she kiss him on the lips like in the 2004 movie, I like that ending better becaues it is to sad to see him die:(
'Sobbing' Why! Why! In this version for once Christine pretty much chose him then the stupid, stinky police come in and ruin everything!!!!!!!!! Then theres Raoul-I mean Philippe who makes Erik and Christine stay too long so the stinky, stupid police get there, Philippe just couldn't take no for an answer could he! 'Sobbing harder' Poor Erik!!! She's so nice to give him a kiss..and on the deformity too, I mean yeah on the lips would have been romantic but the kiss she did showed her acceptance.
I know, it's true, he did kill people. And your right, they were just doing their job. I was being dramatic....DRAMA! So sad though....poor unhappy Erik.... 'Sigh'
I don't like it.

He would rather die live without Christine.
I Love you Erik.
(Damn this is a toss up between Dark, misunderstood Erik -2004- and Kind, sweet and sensitive -1990-.)

OMG!!!!! my new fave phantom!!!! Charles Dance was both sarcastic and unhappy..... 5 stars for him and the movie
lovephantomperson 1 year ago 3
Hate me for it, but I'm happy that it was like Leroux's original novel, and Erik died. Why? Because that's how it's supposed to end. Things aren't as tragic and heartstring-tugging if the misunderstood Phantom doesn't die. :/ That's just my opinion.
BaccioDiMaschera 1 year ago
This is the first Erik that has some wit about him! And the ending held all the beauty and tragedy of the story itself, which no movie that i have seen has captured. Wonderfully done!
wolfspirit820 1 year ago
That was beautiful.

I hate this end! Why he killed him? its not fair! Christine and the Phantom are so wonderful together! *cry* I WANT ANOTHER END...

Hahah the way he looks at Raoul/Philippe after she says "if you love me, please". Like you are sooo lucky! lol

Wow this brings back crazy memories, especially the part where they are walking the staircase at the end and they begin to descend down the staircase.......Wow, that was the part I was looking for. My childhood seems so close, yet so far away.......

does it ever show his actual face in the movie??
gigglygirl11 1 year ago
And I am mad at Christine did't realize that Erik was THE man. Just because of his face...well, there is nothing wrong with his eyes and mouth so as long as he keeps the mask on who cares about his nose?!
Drowfan 1 year ago
This is the best version of the story. But why is it so sad? :((( I have been in love with Erik since I was a child and it is still so hard for me to watch him die. Life is not fair at all! XD
Drowfan 1 year ago
5:18 you can kind of hear a little bit of 'Magical Lasso' from the ALW musical
miep8675 1 year ago
that was beautiful! brava! stupenda!
I didn't think I'd end up crying, but geez, I guess the only Phantom I haven't cried for is the 1989 Phantom. xD
JadeWeapon 1 year ago
how i wish I would see a Phantom of the Opera movie with a happy ending. All seem to end with the Phantom dying or in so much despair.
There is a novel 'though, entitled "Phantom of Manhattan" that tells about Christine and Erik having a son. Erik became a successful businessman and lives in a towering building in New York. Now, that's really something! The phantom, who lived in sadness all his life, finally getting the happiness he deserves :D

and agreed......
MrsJosephMerrick 1 year ago
@XevanescenceXangelX Well, this is it with Leroux, him being a journalist, he writes the book in places like a factual account. He mixes fact and fiction together so well, we cant know the truth..Certainly he based the story on some opera ''legend'' he'd heard about....Anyway, the thing is, we all would really like to believe that ERik REALLY existed wouldnt we.....:)
MrsJosephMerrick 1 year ago
@XevanescenceXangelX I thought he found a skeleton (in the books epilogue?) which he believed to be Eriks - it still wore the ring which Christine had placed on his finger as she promised( which he had given to her and Raoul as a wedding present)......
MrsJosephMerrick 1 year ago
@XevanescenceXangelX thank you for pointing that out. I have the book and know that in the book he dies - I was refering to the 2nd book that he is alive. I like to think in all versions he is alive - in this one - he only acts to be dead so he can get away from the police......I love Phantom - such passion - it is not there in guys today...ugh
phantomlove1000 1 year ago
I've seen this so many times it's really good!! Thanks for sharing;)
MissWitchiepoo 1 year ago
no worries smellydee - if you love the phantom know that he is not dead - everyone thinks he is :D In the book he does not die, in ALW world he does not die - heck there is a 2nd one of both :D Erik lives on :D woo hoo :D

@lolkittehs34 I don't get it, either. The Charles Dance Phantom is so lovable. Even though he's a wimp, he's lovable. But he asked his father to do it, because he was dying. I still don't get it, otherwise.

@lolkittehs34 we never saw his face 8<

If the phantom looked like the Gerald from the 2004 phantom of the opera, I bet you Christine would have still loved him when he took off his mask since he wasn't that hideous...

I hate Christine!! But Teri played her role perfectly, not like Emma Rossum in the musical version 2004. Emma only tried to be seductive, and commercial!
hvanh84 2 years ago 3
Shut up please. Emmy did a great job. Seductive? I think not.
rayna181 2 years ago
@rayna181 My friend, I think everyone here has right t to express his or her opinion. I'd watched the 2004 version before saying that Emmy acted poorly, and I have reasons for saying so. Can you tell me what the great job is you are talkng about? Singing? at low pitches her voice is bearable, but when come to the higher pitches, well... it was terrible!
hvanh84 2 years ago
@rayna181 Acting? I didnt say she was seductive. I'm saying that she TRIED to be seductive, she failed to do it! She failed to be neither seductive nor innocent. I didnt see any passion when she looked at the Phantom, no jolt when she was in his arm. All I could see was that her mouth were open all the time, Her gaze was foolish,( I guess she was supposed to show she was enthralled, thrilled by the phantom).
hvanh84 2 years ago 5
@rayna181 You can say that as she is young, what she's done is impressive. But I even cannot agree with you on this matter, because there were, there are so many younger actors and actress who did their job much better. Say Dakota? Say Macaulay Culkin? Well we have different tastes, so there shouldnt be anything such as 'shut up'! That's all, now you can show how great Emmy is.
hvanh84 2 years ago
Okayy okayy. I guess I see your point. But I must say...I do love Emmy and I hate to see people put her talent down. Sorry if I sounded kinda rude.
rayna181 2 years ago 2
I love this movie, esp Charles Dance.doesnt matter you dont see his face. But it reminds me of when I was at uni and I had a relationship with a man actually called Erik. I wasnt into Phantom at all then. Then, I watched this with my family and I heard the Phantoms name for the first time. My cheeky little sister stared at me, then burst out laughing.''Erik? Erik/!!!'' she said, and it was a bit of a ''joke '' for a while. I was extremely embarassed.
Thanks for this!Wonderful movie,acted well.

TheLeopardAppaloosa 2 years ago 2
Erik... :(
At least this stops Phantom of Manhattan from ever happening, but on the other hand, it stops Phantom of Manhattan from ever happening!
LorChan1919 2 years ago 6
SO SAD!!! poor Erik :( why did she just give him a kiss on forheard like what the hell why didit she kiss him on the lips like in the 2004 movie, I like that ending better becaues it is to sad to see him die:(

boffinme80 2 years ago 2
'Sobbing' Why! Why! In this version for once Christine pretty much chose him then the stupid, stinky police come in and ruin everything!!!!!!!!! Then theres Raoul-I mean Philippe who makes Erik and Christine stay too long so the stinky, stupid police get there, Philippe just couldn't take no for an answer could he! 'Sobbing harder' Poor Erik!!! She's so nice to give him a kiss..and on the deformity too, I mean yeah on the lips would have been romantic but the kiss she did showed her acceptance.

He may have been a good man but he killed people. The police were doing their jobs... :/

I know, it's true, he did kill people. And your right, they were just doing their job. I was being dramatic....DRAMA! So sad though....poor unhappy Erik.... 'Sigh'
