As a post script to the comment below, I moved to Los Angeles in 1972 and live here today. I have raced Corvettes and Mustangs at Orange County International. We have great cruise nights here and plenty of muscle cars but there is nothing to compare to my summer at MAR in 1965. There is just no way to get something like that out of your system.

I graduated WHS 1965 and worked in the concession stands for college money. I saw the Carroll Shelby racing team in action in SCCA. The first race a 427 Ford Cobra overlapped every car in A production before the race was over. Also saw NASCAR and Mario Andretti and many others. Worked at the Best Western Hotel and met many drivers who are legends now. Not bad for a small town.
@ozzzzy81 I was born Sept 1966 and my mom and dad went there practuically every weekend,i basically grew up there as a little boy.I remember my dad telling me of a story about a hot rod and the axle broke coming off the line, said they used to weld the rear ends to make them posi-trac or something,it broke and slammed into a concrete wall. The force was so significant that the Cragar S/S emblem on the mag was imprinted into the concrete wall.Never forget that story. We are from Mexico,Mo.
Wow,thanks for the memories. I started watching the drags at this track in 1980 when they opened back up after being closed for so long. I did not even have my license yet,not till Oct 1980. I saw a lot of great racing over the years at M.A.R. and mourn its passing. What a treat it was to have a tracklike this in your own backyard. One with a real vibe, not like Gateway and that sterile atmosphere!!! In 88 I saw Garlits in Swamp Rat 1 smoke the tires past half track, shut it down and still go 165
