  • Wow you could work for cold steel that's pretty much all they use their knives for lol

  • This weapon is designed around the premise that soldiers would be engaging the enemy up close. I seriously doubt anyone not in the upper 1% of the armed forces would ever use this. It is nice though.

  • Not sure I see how this is practical for military. If you need to fight with a knife, things have probably degraded to surprise hand-to-hand, bum rush, rolling on the ground combat. I this case, a blade this large could be difficult to deploy. Anyone that has done MCMAP, MMA, or BJJ can relate. I purchased one for the cool factor, but for hand-to-hand would probably go with my Microtech Crosshair.

  • @CaptainObvious1970 I have the honor of training with Sensei James Williams (the designer of this knife) and it does it's purpose quite well. Pretty much what the guys out in the field wanted.

  • @Prettynoise I guess I'm trying to figure out what the exact purpose it. Backup weapon? A 2nd handgun would be smaller and easier to carry. Last ditch weapon? Meaning you can't deploy your primary or secondary because of space constraints, grappling, etc? Well if you don't have room to deploy a handgun you won't have room to deploy this thing. Pretty damn cool though. Maybe just for impressing the locals? Afghan tribes people seem to relate to knives, it might elevate your status

  • With all due respect you need to practice on your slicing you did about 3 or 4 before the cut practice cuts and you ended up cutting the bottom of the bottle almost hitting the stand

  • tested mine with factory edge against 2.5 inch fresh bamboo and it goes through like butter. tried it against 4 inch and it almost went the whole way through, but slightly rolled part of the edge. i blame this on my swing though, not the knife. straightened out the edge and now its razor sharp again

  • I have a Hisshou. I did some tameshigiri with it today. Hisshou vs. coconut. Hisshou won. No damage to the egde, no bending or chipping. It's good to know that my bedside home defense knife can split a skull.

  • When putting effort into your swing you lose focus on where you're hitting, you might even be closing your eyes.

    The trick is that every time you make a cut act as if you don't know water might splash up. Also don't make 'practice' swings, if anything they're bad for technique. You need to learn to cut straight away and do it right first time every time.

    If you're going to buy a fighting knife, not that it's my business, but learning to fight is essential to defending yourself, like shooting.

  • The first thing I thought of when I saw the Hisshou was: If that's carbon steel then it's probably a hella weapon. If it's ANY kind of stainless, it's a useless display piece.

  • @sae1095hc Seriously, aus8a is stainless, 440C is stainless, ATS-34 is stainless, 154CM is stainless, S30V is stainless.

    Those are some of the most amazing steels in the world, and you are calling them useless?

    The Hisshou blade shape is too swordish for stainless. Given its 18" length it would be easy to generate enough force to snap a stainless blade.

  • @sae1095hc I disagree with that. First off, it's not being hawked as stainless. It's made of yk-30 high carbon steel, so it wouldn't be stainless per se. And with it's shape, it would be more about technique. You can't chop with it. A slicing action would be needed. Once you get the blade into the meat, you just sort of drag it thorugh the sorry SOB. I tried this piece out on a leg of lamb and then beef. Both times this performed nicely. Stain wise, so far no rust or corrosion yet.

  • @sae1095hc That's an interesting point, at what length do you start to need more of a spring steel. I don't know the answer to that question, but it is an interesting question.

  • what would you prefer for protection from mountain lions and bears? since i dont want to carry a gun in the wilderness i am looking for a really big knife that would be an effective way from keeping me from the lower end of the food chain. ive considered wakizashi, cold steel tanto, cold steel natchez bowie and this one as well

  • @chabochi1 It doesn't have to be huge, just fast and accessible. Anything over 6 inches will do for a mountain lion. For bears, just carry a damn gun.

  • @75SilentWarrior I can't afford a gun right now. So a large blade makes the most sense. iended up getting a Vietnam Tomahawk and Kukri,. When in the mountains I used to carry a .45 ruger p90 but i don't have it anymore

  • @chabochi1 my answer if you don't have much money right now: cold steel warhead mounted on a shaft, wrap right below the blade with paracord for a good grip, there you go, a walking staff and an excellent protection for big predators if you don't have a gun at the moment.

  • But in survival situation and if you have to you can use it to chop down a tree ,baton a wood and many more utility task with it. Look at the blade thickness man. It's ticker than cold steel magnum tantos!! Awesome

  • Go about 2:15 in for a good view of knife and sheath

    also, if i bought this 300$ knife, i would hold downwards, way more effective

    since this knife is like a short sword, but with an extreme tip

    but none the less, perfect for combat

  • actually you could go ahead and call it a short sword, it's like a tanto with shobu zukri geometry, the riccaso is where the habaki would be on a tanto.

  • i love the design of the knife; i own the Hissatsu right now. i do agree that it's not a practical knife for carry, otherwise i'd carry my Kris Cutlery tanto. by impractical, i mean that i'd get stopped and arrested every few miles for carrying it; knife laws in PA are retarded, as you probably know. ;)

  • Honestly this is a nice blade, but isnt very practical for military work. Granted it would be great for use on another person, but it just isn't useful for much else. I never saw combat, but I know plenty of guys who did and they want a knife that can be used to open their rations, used to cut open an injured soldier's clothes and web gear, pop open cans, chop up wood and other hard chores. The hisshou is kind of unwieldly for those things.

  • this is a tactcial blade not a utility blade most sopldiers I hgave talked to carry a large blade as well as a smaller one for utility work, granted not everone, but if I was serving I woudl want my fighting blade razor dsharop at all times, and woudltn use it to open cans or other similar tasks...

  • @cutlerylover And this isnt intended for the regular soldier in the field its made for spec ops and if Im going into a building that I know is crawling with bad guys Im not going to take my can opener as back up I want a someting like this blade.

  • That depends on the mission. A lot of operators I know carry a silent CQC sentury removal tool and a small utility blade. A mission specific weapon is specialized and not utilitarian. The Hissou can penetrate all vitals from any angle and distance and doesn't have any survival designs to hangup on clothing when quick and silent penetration is necessary. It's not the knife for a ground pounder, the Gerber Infantry is good for that. This is more for those "swift, silent and deadly" types.

  • @mightydagon That's because the Hisshou is a 'single purpose' blade. It's not designed to do any of that stuff, or be a 'utility' or 'multi-tool' type knife. James Williams (the designer) said himself it's not for that stuff, "It's for people."

  • @mightydagon I definitely agree with what you're saying, I remember during a demonstration James Williams said that the people who asked for this knife in some cases weren't even allowed to carry a handgun. Or in other cases, if the pistol was the primary weapon the knife serves as a backup. In these cases, these guys don't carry a pack, they aren't at a checkpoint, they're in a conference room next to a VIP or stepping out of a limo or some other restricted sort of situation.

  • Any of Ontarios med-large fixed blades. Cold steel recon 1 or trailmaster, any of the rat RC series. CRKT ss7 razel......

    Most ANY fixed blade will be okay, so long as you are resonable with what you expect from it. My RTAK II does most anything, but, its expensive and heavy. Same goes for my Marine raider knife, all good options.

    All depends on what you want your knife to do.... the environment it will live in, and what you want to spend.. look around, there's lots!

    Dude, I've been doing judo and kendo for years and have been in countless fights. I'm going to tell you what any responsible martial artist will tell you. If someone pulls a knife on you, for the love of god just pull your gun.

    I commute by foot through a particularly rough part of Glasgow (Scotland) and have had everything but a gun pulled on me, trick is to pull something better or to have training, that's the bottom line.

  • @ihaterobbie123 That's actually dependent on the situation. If you have a clear barrier of distance between you and your attacker, yes a gun will add instant intimidation to someone who pulls a knife, or gun, honestly if someone pulled a gun I'd immediately seek cover and begin firing at him, but that's besides the point. If the distance is danger close however, a knife can do much more damage, much quicker when rapidly deployed, and ironically much more accurately.

  • @MacEwanMouse You can point a gun at someone just as quickly as you can turn a knife on them. What's more is a gun delivers a lot more shock to the target and causes more tissue damage.

    Anyway, I live in the UK so I use neither, my only self defence is to stay in shape and continue doing judo. It's worked in the past and it's more reliable than a knife or gun because my motor skills don't evaporate in stressful situations any more.

  • @ihaterobbie123 Common misconception. Many people in a heated situation will immediately grab the gun and, for obvious reasons try to wrestle it away. A knife on the opposite hand has the opposite effect, most people DON'T try to blindly wrestle with a knife because of the fact that it's a sharp metal blade. Furthermore at that close distance, a knife can most certainly cause more damage. Firearms are spot hit weapons, they only contact in one area at a time, where knives can slice, stab, etc

  • @MacEwanMouse I never thought of it that way, I've trained how to wrestle knives away and I'm not really "afraid" of them so I don't understand how someone in a fight would become preoccupied with it. You can't tell what someone's going to do by looking at their weapon, you look at their face and where their attention's focused.

    That being said, if I see a knife I run or try to defuse the situation, I don't feel like dying or serving life when the lunatic falls on his weapon (they always do).

You see knife, most people back off, try to gain distance because if you're out of their reach, nothing they do can affect you. When I say most, I mean inexperienced people. You get someones who's blindly pissed off, suddenly a knife is up in his face, its a quick shock, more than a gun they can quickly get hands on.

  • @ihaterobbie123 As a continuation of my last post, take a look at the hisshou and what it was designed for. You can stab and slash, but the big focus of this "big knife" is the fact that it can actually hew limbs from an opponent. That causes a tremendous shock to the person, and most damage as you now have a solid, clean open wound with profuse bleeding. Trust me, I'm not talking out of my ass, been to country several times, in MOUT situations its so much safer having a good knife to rely on.

  • That is one bad ass blade. I like this review of blades that are actually worth a damn. You have a great perspective. It reminds me of the blade that the Japanese would use for suicide after failing at their objective and dishonoring their family.

  • no but theyre similar, hari kari is performed on the shore of an ocean and the person performing it stands all the pain, seppuku is when they do it in a temple and if the person doesnt die fast enough a preist decapitates him to end his pain

  • No, I'm pretty sure they're the same thing regardless of where they're performed...and isn't the priest who decapitates the samurai, it's a kaishakunin (usually a person close to the samurai)...Usually committed by samurai, but people who'd committed crimes and were forced to commit seppuku weren't allowed a kaishakunin so they'd have to kill themselves via disembowelment with no decapitation.

    Same thing, same character, just two different ways of saying it and was a ritual of the bushido warrior. Used to keep a samurai out of the hands of enemies and/or make up for humiliation/disgrace.

    I'd like to know your sources of where you got your idea that HaraKiri and seppuku are two different things.....

  • "eleftedg" Those two cut outs are called "fullers". They are mistakenly called blood groves commonly but they have nothing to do with blood flow from a victim. It is to strengthen the blade, reduce weight, and to add flex. It's been used on swords for century's. It's mostly for aesthetic purpose on knives because the amount of weight you'll be taking out of it is minimal. Hope you understand.

    Get something from the butcher. Afterwards you can do a kick ass barbecue or freeze the meat and save some money at the same time.
