  • well done u2

    you ruined a classic

  • bono what a load of bollox bro

  • omg I saw this in the videos down the right and didnt want to watch it but couldnt help myself

    CANT UNHEAR, CANT UNSEE!

  • Actually, U2 and Joy Division were post-punk contemporaries. They formed within about a year of each other. If you go back to U2's first album and singles, they were VERY much a post-punk band. If some people would take your head out of their asses and actually LISTEN to their early material, they would know that. Never mind, just stay cool by jumping on the "bash U2 bandwagon". Sure, U2's later stuff isn't very good, but they were once a great band.

  • Shocking. Bono constantly refers to JD as if he needs some sort of reflected glory by associating himself with them. If ever evidence was needed that he just doesnt get 'it', then it is this overly theatrical karaoke rendition of their song.

  • What an awful racket.

  • Not even Hooky can tear us THIS apart.

  • NICE COVER!

  • Dave Gahan tribute is the best.. love Joy Division....

  • @cheli0610 YES!!! i'm with you! that was a amazing performance!!! his voice is' sooo perfect for this song!!!

  • @cheli0610 I think think the same way. the song works better with Gahans feeling and voice :-)

  • @Dela1911 Definitely!

  • @cheli0610 Yep :D my thoughts exactly.

  • this is an ofense to joy division

  • joy division is better than U2

  • @qweasd72376 Well what you're doing is comparing apples and oranges friend. They are two entirely different bands with different styles of music. That's like saying Slayer is better than Madonna. I personally love both U2 and Joy Division. Now if you're saying that Joy Division performed this song better than U2 does then I agree with you, but one band cannot truly be compared to the other. They are just too different.

  • @GhostDistortion - not sure, no disrespect meant but early U2 sounds like they were very influenced by Joy Division.

  • @Britlurker I think it wouldn't be a stretch to say they had an impact on them. I meant more from the total direction. I could definitely hear some Joy Division influence in Boy and October. By War they had pretty much begun evolving into what we have today.

  • I ADORE you, Bono, but you hacked the crap out of this song!!!!! :(

  • I love how many cover versions there are of this song. Joy Division was a big influence for U2. If you're a fan, you've got to read their book U2 on U2, and while listening to each song as it's being discussed. What a trip.

  • Actually that was U2 and Arcade Fire perfoming

  • nasty...

  • "Paul Young did the original"

    You are having a laugh?

  • It's unusual to see U2 do the full version of this live,

Bono often does a couple of lines of this during With or Without You.

Do agree about the comment about Dave Gahans version ,good

  • pants ! what has bono become??? a parody of himself, pitty they were good once.

  • This isn't bad!

  • Ain't really U2 is it?

just some "happening jam" at the end of their concert, seems 2 me...

well LWTUA isn't good cover material though I think it's to "simple"

in it's musical structure & IF U don't add a special *MAGIC* 2 it, it won't take off!

I'm not talkin'bout drugs I'm talking about the originality of Joy Divisions members.

JD & IC with Martin Hannet could make this magic appear in some recordings &

    JoyD in some concerts.

Only "decent" covers of this I've heard is the 2 Swans versions.

  • @decolas66 - This effort is a bit disappointing considering U2 love JD - Check out out Dave Gahan's version which is pretty good - quite emotional, while the Cure's is nicely underplayed and even a bit quirky.

  • @lordlazerus - Yeah, He got into it! very nice version, thanks for the tip!

the Cures version doesn't do it, for me... like their own songs preferably from: 3IB,17secs,tHeadotD,KissmeX3 & Disintegration

  • Well since Ian's not around and New Order is sitting on its ass drinking pints, someone has to perpetuate the legacy.

  • they made it too happy sounding!!! the song isn't meant to be peppy and uplifting! gawd. i know they were just trying to pay joy division respect but. this song just isn't something good to cover because the original was so PERFECT.

  • I was there that night... it was great!!! loved every second of it... i was pretty close to the guy filming this too!! great memories!!!

  • Arcade Fire and U2 GREAT PERFORMANCE!!!!!!!!

  • This is just a plain HORROR!!!!

  • Lo gracioso es que hay muchos que dicen "this houldn't be touched by anyone", "no one deserves to play this song" etc.

  • Just because you don't like the song, doesn't mean it's offensive? I agree the original is miles better but its the though that counts

  • this is offensive

  • Now THIS is bad.

Respeten a Joy Division.

  • Almost offensive...

  • It's not the same without Ian's comical american accent.

  • @confuzathor he didnt sound at all american its called baritone just cos he didnt scream like bono

  • To be fair perhaps they were doing it out of respect, but it's a terrible cover.

  • @HiThereImKester Well, why ELSE would they be doing it? See, that's my point. A band does a cover. These guys met Joy Division once and shared a studio with them on one occasion. Can anyone else on this forum posting insults make such a claim? Nah, didn't think so. God forbid someone pay tribute to these guys or say that there was somebody better in someone else's mind, and these people come undone. LOL! IT'S... O.......KAAAAY.

  • Bono's such a tool.

    Bad cover...

  • This is a tribute, that melody is being Irish'd - and will be remembered for years, centuries even, as it is incorporated into the musical vernacular! That is a good thing!

  • I think Irish songs bands not liket brittish songs....!!! the spitfire

  • @snelleeddy10 You talk Bollocks. Close countries. You know what they say about families fighting the most.

  • well it might not be that great even if it is coming from u2 but at least their paying their respects to JD, and for the record im not a u2 fan im JD all the way

  • without any passion

  • one of the greatest songs ever made should not be covered by anyone... period...

  • no one can match ians voice

    dont bother

  • Fuck all you muppets slagging off Bono!!!! He's only performing a tribute for one of his musical heroes!!!! Some people are idiots on this bloody site, I swear to God. I wouldn't be surprised either if you all hated him just because he's Irish (like myself). Honestly, that really wouldn't surprise me!!!!!!!

  • wrong,totally wrong

  • I love U2, but I agree.

He tries too sound like Ian Curtis, and that's impossible because Ian's voice is special.

It's a bad cover, U2 is a great band but this sond sould be touched by anyone.

Bono is great, but... to appreciate a song, the best way isn't performing, is leastening and respect it.

Joy Division will continue to be the best band ever.

  • @pulpfiction93 Ian Curtis' voice was like a poor man's Jim Morrison. Nothing special about being a poor man's anything.

  • Bono is an amazing lyricist and singer and to compare him to anyone is really unfair to that other person, especially if he's dead. There's no way to have a competition even if he were alive... it's bloody art people!!! I don't understand why can't someone just cover a song and people accept it for what it is... Bono is simply appreciating the song the best way he knows how... by performing it.

  • Did he forget the lyrics or did only I hear that?

  • He tries too hard to sound like Ian Curtis.

  • What a horrible tribute to Joy Division. I did not experience any Joy, and I don't believe Ian did either. U2 is a great band however, but this song should never be touched by anyone.

  • @ejcecil14 isn't funny that this is one of the most covered songs in history? jaja lol... touched by anyone...

  • @ejcecil14

It's ''tocuhed by many many many bands, because it's so great song.

I think it's more influental song than any beatles or U2 song.

  • @gombie - never a truer word said ever !!!

  • @ejcecil14

bollocks.. let them all have a go... to pay respect.

However no one will come close to the original, it's Ian's song so...let them eat cake! x

  • @ejcecil14 what a load of utter bullshit, they covered this song not to offend joy division but the exact opposite, i think ian would have been honoured to have U2 playing one of his their songs...

  • @ejcecil14 this song should be touched and heard by everyone or ian wont be remember for what he did best, his music.joy division isnt just for you and me assclown and kudos to bono who might just love the band as much as all of us and wanted to pay a little homage. not to metion he brought arcade fire along with him. you have two of the most talented rocks bands doing your song if thats not respect than i dont know what is.

  • @ejcecil14 paul young did the original

  • U2 and Arcade fire *

  • Stop hating on U2 people. You're all just bashing on him for the South Park episode. The guy might have an annoying habbit of always wanting to "cure" everything and be on top all the time. But atleast he's doing something. And he's humanitarian. Whats wrong with that?

Just leave the guy alone, the joke's getting old.

U2 was a great band during their "Joshua Tree" years anyways. Too bad they never came close to The Joshua Tree's quality anymore though.

  • Hmm...Curtis is somehow damned for abandoning his little girl. But he sure made wonderful music.

As for U2, they plagiarised the Curtis style, and made a sackload of money. Maybe Bono the Bonehead should give a slice to Curtis's daughter?

At least IC does not have to hear people "pub-rocking" his songs...

  • immitation is the greatest form of flattery

praps they wasnt trying to make a good cover, maybe they was just paying there respects to the greatest lyricist who ever lived

  • @ryancrich well said. The man was not touching from a distance, he touched the reality of life. The rest of us are only dreaming.

  • @ryancrich

    indeed

  • @ryancrich Greatest lyricist to ever live?? LOL! I can think of 10 americans off the top of my head who have him beat.

  • @TheChoice264 i like it how you use american negativly, as though to see even americans are better lyricists, but anyway thats your opinion and your opinion is right to you, and i respect that

  • @ryancrich I wasn't using America negatively. Quite the opposite. I also wasn't trying to suggest that American lyricist's are any better than other peoples. It's just that I'm American and i know mostly American music. Obviously,American artists come to mind, and, for me, i can think of MANY who lay this man to waste. Just my opinion. For what it's worth i enjoy Joy Division and have always liked their music.

  • @TheChoice264 ye but that because you a fat wanker and a yank

our music rules period fuck off and start another war

  • @JTheBiker "wanker"? Nice word. You people are stuck in the stone ages.

    What music might that be?

Hey dumbfuck, you're more than knee deep into any and every war we engage in. You're just too fuckn stupid to know it. Wake up man,and smell the bombs.

If you're english, you should really learn how to speak it and spell it.

    Peace.

  • @TheChoice264 It's not a competition, to some people Ian Curtis is the best lyricist, because his songs mean more to them.

  • @HiThereImKester Fair enough. As i've said, I enjoy Joy Division. They're one of my favorite bands. "She's lost control"...."Warsaw"....."Ceremony"...."Love will...."". You know i could go on and on. I agree with everyone here that Curtis was a great lyricist and voice. He's just not my top 10 as i mentioned. I'm actually more impressed with the band than i am him. To me they are one anyway, one doesn't GO without the other. I just don't spooge over him like most here do,that's all. Just my opin.

  • It's a tribute I hope..

  • arcade fire?

  • omfg

  • u2 is a gr8 band

joy division is a unique band

i don't like the cover either

but this doesn't mean that u2 suck

    ok?

  • good ian is dead so he don´t need to talk ´bout that...

  • Yeah, gents, just don't.

  • awful guitar chords!!! this song has to be melodically suspended and never touch the ground. Bono & Co.you're a bit too high-flown, mates!

  • arcade fire - thumbs down.

  • i love joy division and cure and u2:D fall out boy sucks

  • I love both U2 and Joy Division!

  • What a cover....Looove will tear us apart agaaain........ops a little drop of ...cryng sorry!;)

  • I love U2 and Arcade Fire great cover.

  • es A Day Without Me... :p

  • I love Bono & U2 but no one sings this song like Ian Curtis. Props to U2 for paying homage to Joy Division with this cover.

  • this was on 2005-11-28: Bell Centre, Montreal - Quebec. and yes that is Arcade Fire. U2 usually snippets this song at the end of With or Without You

  • es fantástico

    memorable combinación

  • Wow, that is freaking sweet. Thanks for posting this.

  • that is Arcade Fire playing with them, isn't it? Awesome!!

  • Yes!

  • I've been wanting to see them do this song live for years. Thanks, it's amazing.

  • i was so lucky i saw this song live ... 27 years ago

  • This is my fav song ever. thanks for posting
