This doesn't seem too strange to me. If there is a ritual you are looking to eliminate in India how about the baby drop. Both Muslims and Hindus do it so it is not even a religious practice. They let babies fall from a high height and catch them and say it will bring health. From the eyes of one outside this culture dropping babies on purpose is cruel and hurts your national reputation far more than what they do in this video.
I'm an indian hindu and i find most of rituals bizarre, meaningless and disgusting. Many times i have tried to consider other religions but i get scared of losing my family and friends. I think sikhism is a better religion as it combines islam and hindusim. What you guys think?
@Rohit84up how can you combine Islam and hinduism when islam is so ademately agasint anything not 'allah'. Hinduism in my eyes is very openminded. Then again I am not forced by my family to preform any ritual or prayer. But islam has no problem killing even their fellow muslims in the name of Allah, to me that is not a religion but a political ideology to make everyone think and believe like them. Hinduism has options at least, many gods and goddesses.
@meshmis@nandita If worshipping SUN, the only energy provider for Earth and our solar system, doesn't make sense, then worshipping anything won't make any sense aither. It's most practical of Hindu traditions.
For your kind information, both women and men perform Chhath Puja.. Worshipping SUN GOD.. the ultimate supreme being of our solar system is in no way bizarre.. It's one of the oldest traditions on planet Earth.
@somyaharsh, Historically, sun-worship existed in all primitive societies when humans did not know the true nature of the solar system. Now we know that the sun is just another star. It no longer makes sense to make another 'god' out of this ordinary star.
But that still doesn't explain this religious practice involving unnecessary cruelty to our elderly women who have to spend several days without food in often near freezing water? This is nothing but bizarre!
@NanditaDasgupta You get your head and everything else checked, because am just back from hospital and doctor says am normal. !! very funny, to make fun of someones ritual without knowing or understand its true spirit and practices. it's not gender specific, Both women and men do Chhat Puja. Better get your basic right. It's a great festive moment. And no atrocities or whatever you folks are saying! huh.. so narrowminded leachers are here..
Respond to this video... Both men and women perform this Puja with great festive enthusiasm. You don't trust me? Coome with me in next Puja And all your wrong perceptions shall vanish away! Please don't insult the puret of pure Puja.. Please
@meshmis since when is prayer considered suffering? Unless of course they are suddenly obligated to preform ritual and prayer because of their family, or fear of losing their loved ones if they do not comply
It is a wrong notion to say that women do this fast !..... Most people do in traditional areas.....& fasting is a spiritual practice......do you call fasting in Ramzaan as "suffering"......
or Gandhiji's satyagraha as "suffereing" ??? or the fasting in the season of Lent (mostly women catholics do that) as "Suffering" ??
All this notion of yours sadly is due to ignorance about one of the greatest living faiths !
@anant14 The fasting of 'ramzaam' as you call it, the correct word being ramadhan (arabic), is to attain piety. It's got nothing to do with suffering as you seem to be thinking. Islam does not require us to suffer to be good muslims.
Chhat puja performed by hindu mens too and it is not a gender specific, any gender or aged devotee can perform it. It is the realm of geat indian history. Also other Dharma or religion followers should not comment on it because they are too young before hindus rituals. Dr.Ram you should remove any bad comments from video uploaded and say sorry. robbin124, I am sorry for upsetting you. But Kashmir's Hazratbal (meaning, literally, 'Saint Hair') mosque is dedicated to Prophet Mohammad's pubic hair. Every time the mosque does 'namaz' , the Imam kneels before this pubic hair. There have been several riots when someone suspected that this hair was stolen and people have died in those riots. These are facts which you can, if you want, refuse to accept. But I agree with you that everyone should be free to practise their own relgion.
panchodeeeee, Neither Edwina nor me is Hindu. But we find the tantrums of Moslems like you against the so called 'bad practices' of other religions as totally unacceptable. Why dont you spend your energy reforming your own religion instead of engaging in the noble task of reforming other faiths? panchodeeeee , Every religion has quirky practices and beliefs. Worshipping prophet Mohammd's pubic hair (by Kashmiri Moslems) is one such practice. That Allah waits with 72 virgins in Heaven to greet dead terrorists is one such belief. Corpse worshipping in specially built dargahs by Moslems all over the world is another such custom. But remember all humans used to have one form or other of caste-system once. Hindu caste-system is dying and will disappear altogether one day.
