Back in the day of level 60 the GM Island used to be the place where they stored all level 60 items. So when a player deleted item the GM would just go to the island to retrieve the item and give it to the player. But one day the public found out about the island and there was some Boe epic items that you could buy off the vendors. So overnight you had 50 to 200 to epic items on the auction house. So it basically ruined economy.

Nowadays, "GM Island" is in an instanced zone that players don't have access to.

Though I would assume a couple years later now Blizzard might have lowered there tolerance to such issues with hacking and all. Idk but my find got to GM island once with a glitch and just got moved out and warned.

I don't see what the big deal is with going to GM island. If Blizz didn't want players to go there, they shouldn't put it in. There's plenty of other places they can test in game models and effects without it being so (somewhat) easily accessible. GMs used to have an in game interface for help, but have since moved to a stand alone help guii like JlkJlk18000 said. That doesn't mean they can't get on an in game client if they have to tho.

Fake. GM's do not type. They use macro-like buttons that have scripted text, if there is an issue they dont have a stock answer for they will say wait a moment and fix your issue then type it out. Also, GMs dont play WoW they have a special gui that allows them to talk without being in game. There was a chat program in Classic WoW that did the same thing but got nerfed. If you do see a GM in game it is fake. Simple as that. They have console commands that can do anything they need.
