To me it seems like this animation was made with so much love put into it, which I can't really say for recent cartoons which are planned and worked on by huge teams (not that there's anything wrong with that) These cartoons are just so experimental and silly and FUN.
I don't know, I'm rambling. But thanks for posting this, btw. :)
3:44 I love these old cartoons so much. It's like back then, they seemed to have so much FUN just animating and stuff. I mean like, WTF, the world is ending and the dog is having a fist fight with a tree. Like, these people must of been improvising this cartoon as they went. Also, it reminds me of certain Pivot cartoons (Pivot is an easy-to-use stick figure animation program) that me and my brother and other kids used to make. They were just so innocent (besides the bloodshed) and fresh and fun.
I'm sorry but cartoons will never be like this again. This animation has a message involving humanity and the earth as a whole. This has MEANING. Hell, I'd consider this a form of art expression. Sure we still have Pixar and the like, but a majority of cartoons nowadays deal with flashy violence, "morals" shoved down kids' throats, and/or fart/burp/sex jokes. Why can't there be more animation like this now? That can entertain, but isn't afraid to make us THINK. Maybe be emotional/dark/serious?
Though not nearly as violent as depicted here, the pulling of the End-the-World lever would do just that; not by violent quakes but by the introduction of genetically modified produce.
This cartoon was part of a Max Fleischer retrospective, "The Betty Boop Scandals," which they showed in the theaters in the early 70s. They alternated sound cartoons (mainly Boops) with silent ones like this ones. It was my first look at Fleischer's work before Boop, Popeye, etc. Fascinated the heck out of me!
WOAH. Look out kids with epilepsy. Also, I will give five bucks to anyone who can tell me the names of the songs in this cartoon. I really want to get my hands on the score :D
P.S. I will probably not give you five bucks... probably just a thank you haha
What an ecological message this cartoon has!!!!! The most amazing thing is that it was made in 1928, and nowadays (2009) we are still calling for caring the nature and our planet!
What "ecological message" is in this cartoon? It's 100% fantasy. You are obviously attaching something to it that doesn't exist. You obviously do not understand the nature of cartoon making in the silent era.
Yohannbiimu, I'm talking about what could happen if we act without care, as the little dog did there. Think for once what would happen if we act only for fun, the disaster would be terribly huge. Watch it again and you will see what I mean. Regards and hugs from Venezuela!!!!!!
Who are acting without care? Where are people creating ecological problems? Also, there is no evidence that people are destroying the Earth. The Earth itself (not to mention other non-human natural processes) creates far more "pollution" than we do (more than 90% of it). Being responsible about anything is, of course, a good thing, but the idea that people can cause some sort of universal ecological disaster (short of worldwide nuclear war) is nonsense. There is NO evidence for it.
I saw this very same cartoon on a show one night in january of 94 called liquid television on mtv,it was the last thing i saw before i went to bed that nite, when i opened my eyes around 4 that morning, there was a massive earthquake happening which was known as the northridge earthquake,I'll never forget this cartoon..
Use tubedubber to sync this up with Kom Susser Tod from End of Evangelion. It's god damned amazing.

@galaxywarper92 I'm sorry, but this has no meaning at all. Why did THE DOG pull the lever? What reason should it have to pull it?
I'm sorry, but I think that most of the old cartoons were just silly.

You can tell how much Max Fleischer loved Koko The clown but it shame that
Koko couldn't reach the status of Mickey,
Popeye or Boop. They try to pair Koko up with Bimbo but when you watch them together it just didn't click .

@eldersmit mickey was a rite pansy next to koko. actually he's pretty much a pansy next to anyone, screw you mickey!
