I have successfully built a Rear Wheel Drive locking differential using the basic VEX starter kit gears, 1 servo, and 3-wire motor, and the LEGO Mindstorms worm gear and differential. I was surprised to find out the Mindstorms gears worked, they fit snug to the vex axles with no slip. It still needs a enclosure made for it to work stand-alone with the worm gear, so for the moment I'm using standard gears to get decent speed from the motor to the differential. unfortunately we never took it to competition because our schedules conflicted. But, I can tell you that in the time we tested it we never had a problem.
