john, if i do this in a cnc machine after i deck a block, then do the cylinder boring can it be done all in the cnc after the torque plate is bolted on, i ask because i have seen you open the bore with a sunnen honing machine and you use the springloaded abrassives . do you do it that way because you dnt have cnc machines or the abrassives do a better job.. i plan on using carbide insert boring bars.. and using a CENTROID CNC A532-pb machine, its capable of machining bot blocks n heads.thanks
I've never seen such a heavy cut with a boring head, actually didn't know it was possible until now. I always thought it was roughed out and only a fine pass remained for a boring head. I learned something today, thanks!
what is the purpose of a torque plate? I heard that it is supposed to simulate the presence of the cylinder head. But if you need to use the plate does that indicate the block is purposely made very thin?
Hey John does it matter what material the plate it made out of? I've read that is should be the same material as the head, i.e. aluminum or cast iron. I started to make one for my 2300 Ford but held off when i read that.
@bpowda84 - Aluminum for aluminum and steel or cast iron for iron blocks Trying to find blocks of CI is pretty hard, unless you provide the foundry with a pattern. I've done that before, but will pick up a piece of steel instead.
@kevinxcal1 - Its not chatter, the chip formation is to nice, what you are hearing is the blade skipping over the holethat I drilled for the hole saw.
Maybe it's just me. But I could have sat there and watched the whole boring process in real time. There's something cool about the cutter just taking a sliver off on each pass and eventually getting a big result.
@nextrider123 it`s used when you bore a engine block to keep the bore round. When you torque down your head, the bore is pulled a tiny bit oval. That plate is used as a dummy head when you bore to prevent it

@rkward101 - It's all in how I sharpen the tool and hit is held in the boring head.

@fiatnutz - hit should reat it

Can you show a vid on the detail of the tool that you have on the boring head. I want to make one.

What materials are good for building a torque plate and what's the minimum thickness for it?
@nextrider123: the torqueplate is used for boring/honing the cylinders, THE PROPER WAY

How do you locate the center on a large hole like that ?
Arnthorg 1 month ago
@Arnthorg - by measuring and pre-planning your job.
fiatnutz 1 month ago
@fiatnutz how big should the holes be, comparing to the cylinder's diameter?

@Arnthorg digi readouts :)

@Arnthorg With a co-ax indicator. I love you john but jeez you are a bit to secretive about silly things sometimes.

@fiatnutz minimum how thick has the torque plate need to be?

@fiatnutz still a pain to listen too :P cool stuff though thought about making a torque plate for my buick v6 but was told i dont need one

@scarteo very good explanation!
jsnyara 1 month ago
@nextrider123, It simulates a engine head being torqued to the block which causes distortions. The block can then be bored, etc more accurately.
