To day is Ace "Quorthon" Forsberg's birthday...he would have been 46 to day if he still had walked amongst us...but instead there is a birthdayparty in valhall too his honor! CHEERS ACE!!!
dude, the music is by Sir Hubert Parry, not Gustav holst. was what was written to set William blakes "jerusalem" to. And herree Quorthon sets his won words to it,. awesome.
For when great clouds fill the air and the thunder rolls from o so far away up in the sky, then for sure you will know that I've reached the joyous halls up high... Shivers everytime I hear this song.
@SROCeallaigh Scandinavia's never been united!? Holy shit I did not know that!=P And so what if it was written by Gustav Holst it would still make a very suitable anthem for a united Scandinavia because of the lyrics, atleast in my opinion.
@MiKhAiL0vIcH well I am not too familiar with the original but I am pretty sure that Quorthorn wrote his own lyrics for the piece so guess you're write...I need to hear this album more but all of Nordland is worthy of being a Nordic 'national' anthem for sure...Quorthon to me is as important for Scandinavian culture and music as Wagner is for Germany's...
@SROCeallaigh Aqctaully music by Sir hubert parry, not Holst, and the HYmn jerusalem was what he wrote the music for (William Blakes words) quorthon has adapted this magnificently
@ronniesoak2003 It comes from Holst's Jupiter...I did not know that about Jerusalem, must be selected passages because I can't imagine Quorthon making clear biblical references in his songs...will have to compare the lyrics with those in ELP's Jerusalem
Quorthon ploughed on. he just kept it coming regardless of what other genres were happening. he just did his own thing. he was the greatest metal musician with a punk rock attitude but down to earth nature.he must have been a lovely bloke to just chat to.

Ten years since he's gone... and I wonder, he hasn't died in battle....where is his soul...in Valhalla?...in Nifelheim?....Nowhere?... is there anywhere to go after death?...is there a soul?... I don't know, but what I do know is that Quorthon and others will live forever through their deeds, through what they've created and left for the living ones... Thus they'll never die. NEMO VIR EST QUI MUNDUM NON REDDAT MELIOREM!
In memory of what true music really is,,, in memory of Quorthon,,, and Metal never truly dies,,, the secret of steel is the measure of the hand that wields it!!!
I cry every time I hear this song. The only time I ever listen to it is when someone passes away. It's become something of a tradition between a few of my close friends.
This has many similarities to Jupiter.I tend to think this has been produced as a tribute for the respective classical musician. It would just sound shuey if I'd start to critizise this amazing man for just one track, which is a masterpiece. He succeeded in failing of ruining the original
Haha it doesnt just sound like Jupiter. It is Jupiter. Extremely stolen haha. I think they probably weren't trying to hide it though. If they wanted it to be a secret they probably would have chosen a less famous piece.
I think it would be wise for you to take stock in certain aspects of the musical history of the Germanic people. First, type in "Icelandic Folk music" and you will quickly discover that the Old Norse people had a very rich singing Tradition. You might also want to consider that "medieval Gothic choire" is ultimately derived from Germanic singing techniques, the Goths after all being a Germanic tribe like the "Vikings"(not a people but an activity, btw)
@widugeist They had a rich singing tradition, but not in choirs. Choirs originated in monasteries... possibly based on Greek influence. Anyways the term 'Gothic' doesn't even have anything to do with the Goths. It was applied during the Renaissance to insult various art and architecture. (Because the Goths were a 'barbarian' tribe, it was supposed to be rude).
Anyways, not trying to bash you or anything dude, just a bit of a history nut ;)
@Demosthenes426 Do the all-black-wearing-white-faced-nihilist-fags (also known as "goths") have anything to do with the Gothic period? I always found that weird.
I love bathory and I love Quorthon. In fact I believe he was one of the unsong founding fathers of modern heavy metal, but womever produced his music wasnt a very talented producer, as much of bathorys music sounds a bit muddy and choral vocals tend to sound like a hoard of drunkards.

"Hammerheart" is originally composed by English classical composer Gustav Holst (1874-1934). The piece is from his Planets Suite.
I heard it's version also on the end of INVICTUS film by Clint Eastwood.
