lol calzaghe is such a joke. His whole career is a protected joke. Joe was hurt worse then byronn ever was in this fight. Another BS stoppage on coward joes record
I thought this was maybe a little premature a stoppage when I first watched it, but what would you do as a ref? Mitchells legs had gone, his defence was nowhere and Calzaghe was leathering him all over the ring like a madman with 25secs left in the round.... Look at Mitchells eyes in the replay, he looked like a zombie. Calzaghe had some power if he was willing to put his fragile hands on the line.
Calzaghe never faced a great fighter in his prime and thus is not considered an elite all time great. His best victory is against Kessler and we all saw how easily he was beaten by Andre Ward. His fights against Hopkins and Jones were against aged past their prime fighters. Hopkins had lost 2 of his last 4 fights before facing Calzaghe and Jones was as shot as ever a fighter has been when he faced Calzaghe.
Calzaghe was past his prime when he fought Jones and Hopkins. He is an undefeated champion with over 20 title deffenses . People hate seeing a white man be one of the best fighters in the world .
@grandesbolas1 Yeah he was definitely one of the best fighters in the world during his time. You won't however see him in any credible top 20 fighters of all time lists.
@Aware2128 I agree, mate. My dad was Welsh, and I would like to say Joe was a legend the likes of Robinson or Hagler, but I can't. He did show heart in this fight , though.
@Aware2128 We saw how Kessler won the world title again v Froch, who thrashed Abraham (who beat Taylor), ko'd Taylor who beat Hopkins x2. Hopkins pulled out of the fight arranged with Calzaghe years before. Hardly Joe's fault there was noone good enough around to really test him- Jones had other fish to fry when younger. Joe wasn't getting enough credit in the US, as a European, until he thrashed Lacy. Hopkins is now world champ 3 years after fighting Joe, who was in his late 30s v Jones.
@Aware2128 actually Hopkins wasn"t shot, because after Joe schooled him, next fight Hopkins beat the undeafeted Kelly Pavlik, also Hopkins has just beaten Jean Pascal for Light heavyweight title. Aged? Joe was 36 Jones 39. Both had long careers, Calzaghe was also past his best!
@dan32113 Where did I ever use the word SHOT with respect to Bernard Hopkins? Read what I said next time. I said he was past his prime and old. This is not debatable. I said ROY JONES WAS SHOT. There is a distinct difference between past your prime and shot.
Is split decision victory that many saw could have gone either way really schooling somebody? I personally thought Calzaghe won, but not all are convinced. Calzaghe got knocked down and really didn't land that many significant blows against Hopkins.
@s13hgp Yes Joe is the greatest boxer born in England even though he's Welsh- but the greatest ever British boxer is Jimmy Wilde, a Welshman born in Wales.
Suoperb shot that put JC down. Short and sweet with so much power on it it actually spun JC around. Amazing he got up from that. Similar to Sugar Ray Robinsion's KO punch of Gene Fullmer.
this was a great performance by the BEST fighter iv EVER SEEN in boxing after 44-years of being involved in boxing + following boxing as a big fan...im talking about british boxing! but even in worldwide terms-he was one of the GREATEST IV EVER SEEN-PERIOD! ONE OF THE TRUE ALL TIME GREATS-"FOR SURE"!
Wow, forget about this round. All time great round, after being dumped by a vicious Mitchell right. Only HOFer come back like Super Joe and stop his opponent. All time great!!!
Calzaghe slaps like my mum.. Even with his undefeated record, guy isn't even ranked in top 100 boxers of all time.. And hatton is more popular in th UK... wasn't his nickname sicknote calzaghe?? Guys overrated.. Wait till jones is shit before he fights him... PATHETIC.. guys a joke, and broke.. Y ain't I surprised.. R u???
@Bigsexyaussie And what's your mum doing slapping you? I appreciate that you deserve it but does this mean she's a child abuser, because you write like a kid?
@jabjabmove Joe is an absolute legend who smashed every yank that dared face him, including the best they have. No mentions that he was plagued with bad hands and fought through the pain to be the best of our times next to Lennox. The yanks hate it when the Brits kick their asses and Calzaghe and Lennox did just that. They are both LEGENDS.
I notice Calzaghe goes to kiss a woman straight after the victory. Was that his wife I wonder who he had the acrimonious divorce from and is she I wonder also the notorious poster known as 'Cowardzaghe'?
i'm just about finished reading joe's autobiography -
he's a true fighter, lives for boxing. He siad that knockout punch from mitchell REALLY hurt! so he's got a lot of respect for mitchell and feels lucky to have won that fight
im sure people would agree with my post, and more agree with the ref,,,if that was not stopped joe would have retired byron from boxing alltogether, its not coz he is my fav boxer, its coz what i seen on the video of the fight, joe could have realy hurt byron very badly if the fight went on,,,,,just read merlin 999999 comments, the words speak for them selves, class sportsman
@jorgekluney, they r saying its a awful stoppage this and that,FACTS (1) fighters got to defend their selvs at all time, which the ref didn't think byron could do,,,,,otherwise more and more boxers would have brain damage, if the ref just left them fight,,FACT(2),,,,plus when joe went down he got up and didn't wobble as much as byron did, well not at all,FACT (3) more bobslay riders have died than boxers, due to the fact that refs stop it when boxers can-NOT defend them selves,
Even in slow motion, Calzaghe's punches come at a ferocious pace. He was still in his prime at this stage. When he fought Lacy, he was already a couple of years past his best.
he broke his hands many years ago mid fight and it had several times in future fights. imagine round 1 of a world title fight and you break your hand? then you still win fighting virtually one handed against a world class fighter? he wore the tshirt fought over half his fights outside his homeland won 23 world title fights and retired at the top undefeated at madison square garden.......SALUTE JOEY
calzaghe wasn't lucky, he was just a better fighter. fascinating 2 rounds. i know calzaghe gets dismissed as a slapper, but this short fight showed how hard his punches were before he stufed his hands. and it showcased his tenacity. calzaghe recovered well from hard punches, could stick it out in an onslaught. tough.
Joe was a little lucky, Mitchell had knocked him down and went in for the kill when he had Joe up agains the ropes himself, but Mitchell got careless because of it and Joe slipped in a counter which changed the fight. it could have been a very different fight if that never happened, i can't believe these guys never had a rematch wtf?
@siwooot if joe was as badly hurt as you think he wouldn't have had the snap in his punches to knock him down flat on his face. Calzaghe had amazing powers of recovery.
thanks for putting this fight up. i think joe has to be in the top ten all time best. interesting to see if he makes a comeback. boxers do that. great record 46 wins no losses. he beat kessler, jones jnr, brewer among others but these three whilst they were good.
This fight shows the deceptiveness of joe's "slapping" style - he certainly doesn't throw a lot of punches in the classic orthodox way - he wings them and they look like slaps. But he lands them and they are hard enough (when he wants them to be) to serve up the first ko loss to a two time champ like Byron Mitchell.
WTF why did the ref stop this fight???, THIS SPORT IS CALLED BOXING, NOT FOOTBALL!!!!! why is it different when amir khan went down against prescott and stumbled back into the ropes it continued? I mean calzaghe was shook, but when you've got a whole crowd backing you, it's bound to help as a boost. If this guy can floor calzaghe, I dred to think what hopkins or jones would've done back then. LOL. Come out of retirement and fight chad dawson. hopkins is stil going at 45, why shouldn't joe ?
@88stockmj A. pascel is a good fighter. B. chads a southpaw, meaning hard work for calzaghe, it very hard to fight a southpaw let alone fast hands too, if calzaghe was orthadox he'd be half the fight he is, but ahh well, he retired, sniffed coke and died
@EaszAz Joe is better than pascal don't even try and compare them. Dawson doesn't hit hard enough and is far too inactive. Joe is a southpaw as well and probably has better handspeed.
@terryfink i think he only started to "slap" because his hands were so fucked, always in agony. people who only see the roy jones/b-hop era calzaghe think he couldnt punch, they should watch clips like this. and about leaving wales, i always think that to. europeans like ottke and calzaghe, theyre like oh they never leave there home countries, why doesnt that apply to US fighters to?

they are all saying they stoped the fight to early, but the rules are to defend your self at all times and byron had no chance of doing that, even if the ref diddnt stop it joe would have dissmantled him without a doubt,

@johnathansrc Yeah.... Byron's legs were stiff the whole time after that knock down.... just watch his legs. Byron was only going to get hurt.
