  • Nice title :)

  • what a great song, feels so good to hear when in a time of hard

  • My dad kicked me out of my house for the fifth time on my birthday last week, he'll ask me to come back as soon as my mom wants me back to her house. He's the only one I thought really loved me and cared about me as an actual person. I'm eighteen and I live in a hotel now because I have nowhere to go.

This song is making me cry and I need it. This song is brilliant

  • Listen to this every time I'm on my way to and from visiting my fuckface of a father.

  • I will not leave the kitchen, I will make you a sandwich.

  • wonderful, truth, brutal!!

  • I can't stop listening to this... the last 937 hits were mine... My next life I want to be this song.

  • would be cool to hear her sing this with Björk...

  • Well done fucking absolutely well done.

  • My sons mother loves this song....

Gotta be honest it is a great track.

  • fucking cunting people. yeah i need this song right now.

  • I like the way she sings with Snow Patrol! Its better then this i reckon...but thats just my opinion of it

  • i'm pretty sure this isn't about cheating. as far as i know, it is about her feelings towards Loudon, her dad, who gave her and her siblings next to no attention whatsoever while at the peak of his carreer. she's calling him out on being a shitty dad.

  • what a bitch

  • If you wanna have fans but not too many so that you become mainstream I think an album title like this works.

I love you, you Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole

  • This song is boss!

  • found this girl afta relising she was the female voice from Snow Patrol's Set the fire to the 3rd bar and she is amazing

  • Thank you ...my sentiments exactly.

  • This is sex. What's up with the suburban house-wife "You Cheated Me" crap?Anyhow,

she created this. Stick a fork in her. She's done. Still, she created this...so, I still love her despite her current lameness. Love ya Martha. : )

  • @soundtosound

That's not really fair, "You cheated me" is about cheating yourself by abusing your body with drugs and unhealthy relationships. I.e standing up for yourself.

Hope that restored your faith in Martha!

  • @Hunter172 - "You cheated me" is bad pop. I'm sorry, I can't put softeners in here because of space restrictions. So i have to be blunt. I like good pop. What's bad about it? The music. It's just so........meh. Linda Ronstadt, Helen Reddy, middle of the road, middle-aged music. I'm a musician, don't really listen to lyrics. Only Joni M. I listen to lyrics. That's it. Only her. But, tones, textures, rhythms, sonics, convey passion.....just listen to what her voice is doing on this! YCMe? Boring.

  • This is my theme song

  • no offence but martha wainwrights a bitch. i mean lw3 is a fucking awesome performer and songwriter and shes saying hes a motherfucking ass hole well listen to motel blues or a father and a son or white whinos and try say hes an ass hole then

  • i like

  • 0:50-0:32 is SOO my ex's new ringtone!!!!!!! XD that bloody motherfucking asshole

  • Ode to rock-bottom. Brilliant, as that's where I am right now :D nice to know someone can write a song just to say "fuck you" to someone who screwed her over. Lx

  • fuck this song

  • This song shits i love a scorned woman

  • I'm shocked at Loudon Wainwright the Thirds little girl ! I have just one thing to say:

Dead skunk in the middle of the road

You got yer dead skunk in the middle of the road

    Stinkin' to high Heaven!

  • I will not say I am alright for you <3

Probably one of the best things to take away from this song. I use this throughout my life, because I always used to pretend, but one day I said fuck it, I will NOT say I'm alright for you.

  • when all else has failed, I have this song, sung at the top of my lungs to the sky. Thanks Martha.

  • wow, I know one of you searched for "motherfucking asshole"

  • love this song! love her voice. i cant stop playing this song...............:)

  • @critchley3819 ditto means "yeah me too, i agree"

  • @PlanYourLift and that's why Ditto is the pokemon known for transforming into it's opponent

  • I broke out singing this song when I got fired by my boss.

  • I love this song!

  • love it

  • 13 people are mother fucking assholes.

  • Great song.

  • bitch is crazy

  • mon amour

  • mmmmmmmmmmmm que dire????????????? Merci ma belle

  • man watta song watta voice with real power and meaning

  • my ex was visiting and he told me he loves the song - I said hey it's my break-up anthem, it's about you... he said he'd been called worse

  • @ntgroover Yeh OK but what do you mean?

  • Imagine someone spilling their guts in an artistic form. Never been done before. Absolutely terrible. Bella Martha!!!! Sei una grande!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Imagine someone spilling their guts in an artistic form. Never been done before. Absolutely terrible. BellaMartha!!!! Sei una grande!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ggarbage'

  • what a trash heap

  • @zalechlabe Well, if you weren't such an ignorant douchebag, you'd realize that the song has depth and meaning, and focuses on the difficulties of growing up with abusive, deadbeat parents (specifically her father). It's swearing in a powerful, poetic sense. But people like you just don't see that. So stop being a douchebag and listen to the damn music.

  • @zalechlabe Get over yourself.

  • @DontGoQuietly The title obviously applies to you...

  • Very mature, honey.

  • @DontGoQuietly Exactly, the song is about ego, making too much out of life, unnecessarily overly dramatic... Just don't get into trouble. Learning to be tolerant is better... keep it positive...

  • @zalechlabe It's interesting how you "have no interest in this song whatsoever" yet you bothered to comment on it a second time, nearly a month after the second time.

  • very good

  • good

  • What a foul mouthed fuckin bastard of a song!

  • is she singing about dick chainey?

  • As a huge Loudon fan, I have to say it's a great pity he fucked this particular lady's mother....

  • Bloody Mother Fucking Magnificent!

  • POETRY IS NO PLACE FOR A HEART THATS A WHORE. indeed.

  • @zalechlabe haha thats hilarious. keep your head, keep your nose clean, keep the telly on...the grave awaits you!

  • You do realise this is about her dad right? You can't really choose your parents.

  • Nice. I still dig Loudon though, even if he is a "Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole."

  • the irony between this one and loudon wainwright III - daughter is just outstanding.

  • Might get stabby.

  • Such a great fucking song.

Poetry is no place for a heart that's a whore.

  • Love this song.

--totally unrelated: The album cover reminds me so much of Helen Reddy's "I am Woman"

  • @musiknouvel Yep it sure is unrelated but Helen Reddy has a voice, one of the best.

  • Poetry don't work on whores.

  • WTF! how come it took me so long to get to this? great voice, great song. pure.

  • @raphael13377 I to just found this and Its has blown me away.

  • @critchley3819 : ditto

  • @Gakeolebale I dont know why you have contacted me when all I can find in my reply from you is ditto and I dont know what ditto means...

  • @critchley3819 wasn't Ditto a pokemon? i'll have to check this up

  • this is a beautiful, sad song. i love martha.

  • For BRANDON FIELDS

  • To BRANDON FIELDS

  • I like the name of the song, that's for sure!

  • fuck em all...still a great song

  • I love this song. So true and emotional. And her voice is amazing.

  • So much emotion and depth in this

  • This song is about her father, Loudon Wainwright III a cult icon in folk singing/writing. He is considered the Charlie Chaplin of Folk. Her brother, herself, and her father each appeared in the film The Aviator, the 2004 Martin Scorcese film about Howard Hughes. They all played lounge singers in the three eras shown through The Coconut Grove nightclub.

  • F U C K

  • i <3 martha

  • The best, the best, the best!!

Even tho I love my female friends singing too /watch?v=PociEqw_VTo ... leave a comment if you like her. thx. : )

  • This song is fucking amazing...

  • ....nydelig<3

  • it's weird to hear those harsh words to a somewhat relaxing melody

  • Her voice and freedom of expression and emotional height are incredible on this. A sort of folk crescendo. Truly marvelous. Like a female Dylan.

  • She sounds like she has a cold. Her voice sounds like it's going out the whole time.

  • free and honist, such a timless voice

  • fucking cool love ya mate

  • timeless and classic for me..

  • She should be much more famous than she is. Very underrated and overlooked.

  • @tubl8 True! I was just recently introduced to her through a friend. I am 72 and when I heard this song, I nearly started to cry, for I know these feelings so well! It is almost a motto for people my age! What? Are we all only capable of listening to Guy Lombardo and Lawrence Welk? No way! Give me MW any day! I like truth!

  • I love the fact that she always expresses her feelings without becoming melodramatic or wimpy...so strong spirited...

  • all comments were green in this list .., says heaps about the song brilliant

  • The title is just bloody brutal...

  • brilliant

  • that voice... *goosebumps*

  • pure brilliance

  • masterpiece

  • reminds me of someone..............

  • whoever you are

  • I adore this. The emotion in it... I aspire to write a song this real.

  • But I feel old & tired

  • Poetry is no place for a heart that's a whore

    And I'm young & I'm strong

But I feel old & tired

    Overfired

And I've been poked & stoked

It's all smoke, there's no more fire

    Only desire

    For you, whoever you are

    For you, whoever you are

  • You say my time here has been some sort of joke That I've been messing around Some sort of incubating period For when I really come around I'm cracking up And you have no idea No idea how it feels to be on your own In your own home with the fucking phone And the mother of gloom In your bedroom Standing over your head With her hand in your head With her hand in your head
  • I will not pretend I will not put on a smile I will not say I'm all right for you When all I wanted was to be good To do everything in truth To do everything in truth Oh I wish I wish I wish I was born a man So I could learn how to stand up for myself Like those guys with guitars I've been watching in bars Who've been stamping their feet to a different beat
  • Beautiful...the title comes from a hurtin' place that just needs to let some anger out. Dig it.

  • thanks for this song.

  • Great tune.

  • Comment removed

  • wow...some title. aha

  • this is for u daddy...

  • "i will not say i am alright for you.."

sometimes thats all you can say when life is a head fuck

  • Sooo underrated... The lyrics are just genius.

  • For all of us daughters with absent fathers. In all the ways they can be absent. Whoever they are.

  • ARRGHH ya Bloody!

  • Just perfect...

  • This is a song by a girl to her idiot father. am I not right? Please correct me if I am wrong. "For whoever you are" is one of the most poignant phrases I have yet heard in a song. Chills, indeed.

  • Correct, that's what she's said when questioned about it.

A girl's father who marginalises her just with his goddamn presence and whose presence is with her wherever she goes.

-I'd never try to please you just because all I've ever wanted is your acceptance-

  • love this song =D

  • No, you.

  • Jesus this photo of hers resemble Mariah's lips and facial contour.

  • omg yeah it does!

  • I've just bumped into this Martha Wainwright lady, but she is really cool. I wish I've been acquainted with her longer. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite female vocalists, right next to Spektor and Harvey.

  • such a tune it makes me think of crying naked women running round new york in the rain with an axe

    wicked

  • haha omg it makes me think that to! haha

  • The song title is an sight grabber

  • Go Martha!

    Yayyyyyy!

  • Ammmmmaaaaaaaaaazzzzzzzzzzziiiinnggggg!

  • I guess, it's about a parent/child situation - but it fits for other occasions too. Me - for example - I'm thinking about my wife, my sister - ja, my father too, last not least Noemi, Magali... and so on. Just about this bunch of motherfucking assholes I've met in the course of my life. Well, maybe you're just in a parent/child situation if you love someone - you're just so ready to expect all the best and to do everything in truth - even if the other is obviously a b.m.f.a.. Or is that oedipal?

  • I love this song and the one about her brother: laurel and hardy!

It's a sad song but more sad for her. Seeing this part:

All I wanted was to be good, to do everything true!

    Don't you think?

  • Yes! Laurel and Hardy is a brilliant song - finally someone who has the Ground Floor album :)

  • I can't get enough of this. It's amazing.

  • quite sad really to sing a song like this about your old man

  • this is mathas way of telling her dad whats on her mind...........awesome

  • I waited two minutes and twenty seconds to hear this 2:20 nice song

  • "I will not pretend, I will not putt on a smile" Wow.. I love it! The text is so amazing . :D

  • This is such a fearless song - I have only recently properly discovered Martha Wainwright, I love her voice, fragile yet strong. Kate Bush meetsTori Amos after the bloody mother f**ker of all break ups?:)

  • Best part of all...break those vocal chords Martha !! Alllllll righttttttt !!!!!!!!

  • to DontGoQuietly: this song is phantasmic to me. You mentioned her reasons for writing. what were her reason/s? It's poetic and I as everyone perhaps is reading into it, but not knowing her until recently?

  • mega läässig

  • WOW this hits home so much it fuckin scares me. its like she grew up in my house. I love it ....passion. pain. hurt. love its got it all..... well done Martha love ya

  • AWSOME BALLAD!

  • WAHT AN AWSOME BALLAD!!!!! LOVE THIS!

  • FUCKING GREAT!!!

  • This song is epic! Can't be much better than that!

  • Martha got it so right. She is extremely wonderful.

  • there is something of Dylan about her

  • There's such wryness, sadness and anger packed into it and it's just wonderful. I think everyone has identified with this song at some point and Martha's reasons for writing it are my own reasons for loving it.

  • oh i love this song.

  • Rock on Martha I love you too great song and so exquisite...............

  • Of course ;) Martha IS the exquisite :D

  • brilliant!
