I don't think Didi sang this but it sure sounds like her/even though her speaking voice is so different.. I love this version the best. Love Didi Conn!!! Think I said that already! OK so I'm repeating myself>LOL!
I just love this song/ more so love this version of it. Love Didi Conn! Did she really sing this or did Kasey do this and Didi lip sync? Hope she didn't. She's just great!!!
fantastic...joe brooks "screwed" another person over (no pun intended)....he and kasey cisyk sang lots of his jingles and then he hired her to sing in "you light up my life." she wasn't listed in the film credits and then brooks replaced her with debby boone after they had a falling out, and according to boone, they had a love interest before...kasey sued for not being listed in the credits and won but boone got the fame...i love kasey's version best...shame on joe brooks! again!!
Didi Conn is lip sincing to Debbie Boones original. She did not really sing this in the movie. You Light Up My Life was one of the first movies my wife and I saw when we were first dating. This brings back great memories for sure.
@806robbie debby boone was not singing...didi conn lip synched to kasey cisyk...great singer not credited originally but when re-released she was listed...
@806robbie NO!!!!!!! Didi Conn did lip sincing to the original recording of Kasey Cisyk's version. Debbie Boones version came out AFTER the movie!!!! Cisyk was a studio singer that sung the original used in the movie!!!! And Kasey Cisyk (from Ukraine) died of breast cancer March 29, 1998, six days before her 45th birthday.
I remember watching this when I was a kid maybe nine or ten having no idea who sang this but thirty five years later this girl could have passed for the original and that is absolutely no knock on Debbie Boone at all.
I saw this movie all the way through a long time ago, but I would need to see it again to understand what it's really about. I remember that she goes to bed with some guy she just met at the very beginning, even though she's engaged, but I don't remember the whole deal behind that. I also don't remember exactly what's happening with her career. Isn't her father pushing her to be a stand-up comedian or something, even though she knows her talent is as a singer?
The vocals are great but I prefer Debby Boone's version. Didi Conn, did a terrible lip synching job.....that voice could never come out out of Didi..ala Millie Vanillie LOL
this was and always will be a great movie didi conn great job great plot music awesome i loved it when i first saw it in the seventies and i still love it wonderful story cant get better than this classic
No one would ever exspect Didi to sing this as Kasey did. Nor would you exspect Kasey or anyone else to act as sweet and timid as Didi can. It was an excellent combination of acting and song. The subject of trying to break away from parental control touches everyone at one point or another in life. Joe Silver did that well, a father who might be wrong, can be man enough to admit it. Didi never should have slept with that bum on the first date, but I guess it was the 70's.
What I forgot to mention yesterday, If you want to hear Kasey's beautiful voice again, listen to her sing the title song from the movie "The One and Only", which starred Henry Winkler as the wrestler Gorgeous George. I just listened to it on youtubeand you can also see an interview with this beatiful lady in her native language..The first time I saw and heard Kasey sing "The One and Only" was many years ago on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. I fell in love with her again that night
As I commented several years ago when everyone assumed Debby Boone sang this in the movie, Pat Boone, the so called man of God, cut Kasey out of recording it by pretending that his daughter sang it in the movie. I have the 45 record of Debby Boone and the label says "From the movie "You light up my life". Mr. Boone has done numerous scams like this. He had his daughters do commercials for acne cream until it was revealed that they never used it. Man of God or false prophet?
@gityfc don't know about Pat Boone's morals but you are so wrong about the recording, Debbie recorded this song almost six months after the movie and the soundtrack had been out . You are right about Kacey being left out as the soundtrack lists the artist as "Original Cast" but that was a decision made by the movie producers, Pat Boone had nothing to do with it.
@lakings13 apparently joe brooks the composer had a falling out with kasey and hired debby boone to record the single...probably his fault she wasn't credited with the movie initially..she sued and won...good for her!
This scene was filmed at United/Western Recording Studios on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood in July 1976 for the summer 1977 film. So many hit songs were recorded in this studio in real life such as California Dreamin' by Mama's & Papa's, The Way We Were by Barbra Streisand, Heartbeat, it's a Lovebeat by Tony DeFranco, Making A Good Thing Better by Olivia Newton-John and countless others. This song being used here was recored at A&R Studios in New York by Kasey for the film.
I get so emotional when I watch the video. this is my video song. I cry alot. I had breast cancer and remission since May 2010. My husband been out of work for six months and now he got new job and moving day after thanksgiving. i am staying here with two teenagers till graduation from high school. . I am going o miss my husband of 28 years. I play this song when I think of my husband.
How tough you are girl! We understand life is not supposed to be like this, but life still passinig by. Don't give up, think and go positive. We will meet each one day any way.......hahaha....got to be optimistic, why not?
In wandering around on YouTube, I discovered that Kasey died in 1998. Such a wonderful voice .. and IMHO the best version. RIP, Kasey .. and know that we will always enjoy this song as our memory of you
Amazing performance, but as much as I have read on the subject, Kasey did not want to do much with this song. She wasnt particularly interested to promote it as a single and Debbie Boone saw the chance and grabbed it. The result was a smashing one-hit -wonder for Boone, before she gave up everything to sing religious songs...
Well - not really!!! There was constant fighting on the rights of the song - Brooks wrote it - Conn - changed it - and Brooks loved Kasey Cisyk's version! Boone wanted much less violins in the back. Eventually - to keep everybody happy - 3 versions were released: Kasey Cisyk's version - with the movie - Conn's version (went nowhere) and Boone's version - which Hit Billboards #1 slot - making Pat and Debbie the only Father/Daughter pair in history - to have their first song hit #1!!
This was very simply a fair movie - and a great song - and EVERYBODY knew it - and EVERYBODY wanted the song - and while they were fighting over it - Debbie Boone made a version that sacked them all!!!! However the Kasey Cisyk version (from the movie) is the one that most people fell in love with - so they went out and bought the one that was available the Debbie Boone version!!
@Earthlinked thanks... amazing story... reminds me the Trisha Rearwood - Lee Ann Rimes feud during the release of "How Do I Live", from "Con Air".. Didn't win an Oscar (as this one did), but was nominated for one... and sure made history at the Grammys, as the only song nominated twice in the same category...
because of this poor attempt at a movie I never saw Star Wars DeDe (Frenchy in Grease) Kahn. I have never and will never any see any Star Wars movies due to the trama I suffered by giving in to girls that fateful night in Coolidge Corner cinema

Casting Didi Conn in this movie was unrealistic to me. Her spoken sound was so far outside her singing sound.
silvereagle2061 6 days ago
@silvereagle2061 Her singing sound was not her actually. Singing sound was Casey (Kvitka) Cisuk- American singer of Ukrainian descent.
