Is it just me or was her acting much more exciting, much more alert, when she was young? Usually it goes the other way, it seems. Singers usually gain in dramatic insight as they lose vocal prowess. With JS it seems like she had it all at the beginning.
@fullbuck50 Maybe she realized at a certain point 'Hell, I'm Joan Sutherland, people come here to hear me sing, so why bother and act?' And it was indeed miraculous singing.
@fullbuck50 Really? I think it's the opposite. Watching her early Bell Telephone Hour performances, she's as dull as a post to watch. However, her Met 1982 Lucia, 1980 Lucrezia, a lot of the 1978 Norma, and the 1982 Die Fledermaus are all very well acted.
ESTA VOZ NO HA SIDO SUPERADA........JAJAJAJAJAJAJAAJAJAJAJAJAAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJ.ES LA HOSTIA ESTA MUJER............ES QUE POR MAS QUE LA ESCUCHO NO TERMINO DE ENTENDER .....QUE NADIE EN UN PLANETA DE TANTOS MILLONES NO PUEDAN HACER ESO CON LA VOZ..........ES UNA DIOSA............
Lucia was regarded by many as Sutherland's greatest role--although I love her Amina as well--and hearing this one can certainly understand why. Thanks, John, for sending my way, and thanks to AmorediPazzia for posting.

You can still understand the words - and notice how rythmically alert she is - much more so than later, when Bonynge conducted all her performances.

I"m not a big fan of Sutherland's, but this is just spectacular. Wonderful high E at the end.
