Great animation. Finally gave me the full picture of exactly what happened when. I could only imagine what was going on through the mind of every single person onboard during the entire 3 and a half minutes. Just watching this made it feel like an eternity. But I'm sure for the pilot and crew it must have been the most frantic 3 1/2 mins of their lives.
this guy is awesome, lucky they because it was a river, if they were landing at the sea with the altitude and depressions that waves cause it would be more complicated, greetings from spain
Awsome job by the pilots. Reminds me of the Gottröra crash in Sweden when both engines stopped working on the McDonnell Douglas MD-81 cause of ice. The pilots manage to glide land on a feild saving all crew and passangers.
The crew of this flight are to be commended, no doubt. But don't forget about the air traffic controller. He didn't know the situation exactly, but he gave the pilot every bit of potentially useful information he could. Which runways at which airports were available, how far and what heading they were, exactly what a pilot needs to know in that situation. Didn't wind up being able to reach any runway, but still he made the pilot aware of what was out there. Kudos to him as well.
@chantrellcreek The ATC just made a mistake when calling the name out several times. I believe at some point (maybe not on this recording) Capt. Sullenberger also said 1529 - may have been after ATC said 1529 and he was just repeating it.
@danflink11 Yeah Sully called it 1539 after the bird strike, and then departure called it 1529 when telling tower about the emergency, they figured it out after awhile
Some people just have a calmed voice, even in a tense situations. Captains are trained to keep a calmed voice at ANY TIME, regardless or they are never going to be able to talk to ATC or passengers and will be fired. ITS PART OF PILOT TRAINING. But, PILOT ERRORS happen even when keeping a great voice. Your body and your voice are different to control. Some freeze and Panic and keep a good voice. Some pay more attention to PILOTING WELL than SOUNDING WELL. I'M A CFI OF CFI'S. Google TACA 110
@SoloWingF16 Probbably the first officer. It sounds like the captain pressed the push-to-talk button while the second officer was talking to him about the ATC ;)
@rahulras I don't know much about aviation, but I suspect it was due to the plane being too close to the ground, which was something he would have expected to happen as they were landing (watering).
ive done some hours in a real flight simulator on 767's and had emulated blowouts on landing, it's so real i think anyone trying that manouver on a flight simulator (not fs4 but a real one) would have a 190+ heart rate and brown stains..
having to do it for real... he kept very calm and got it right. top man.. that is what flight training is for, well done also to his training instructor. well done everyone..
I love how he doesn't even bother responding to their calls once he realizes he's going to have to ditch. Priority is completely on aviating at that point ...just as taught. What a pro. A more inexperienced pilot would likely mess that up.
@peteisnotneat (rolleyes) whatever. How many 'officers' are onboard in order to necessitate calling one the First officer? Pardon my lack of PC for non-senior pilots.
@woodycoat Do as you please. F/O Skiles had about as many hours as Sully. Go to the Airventure link. See how Sully suggests "First Officer Skiles" versus "copilot." Fast forward out 6:40 & 9:40. Thanks! Just in honor of their success . . .
@AuroraCypher Yeah because airbus recently installed a ils in the hudson which makes the FBW autoland your plane in the river in case you have to ditch, right? Lol, sure the FBW makes PIO and the flying a little smoother but it was definately not the big part of what saved them, put the 2 and 3 as shared 1 and the 1 as a 4.
Your wrong sir. Every pilot learns this simple acronym and the captain in this case even remarked in an interview about this acronym. They train--extensively--for this type of scenario and even use the hudson as the "last ditch" scenario in simulator engine failures. Its when pilots make it more complicated then this that people die.
Just another flight crew doing their job. Thank god they did it so well, many lives may have been lost if they didn't. Kudos to the crew for knowing what to do and pulling it off.
I bet Chesley could take-on chuck norris and win big time. That man is one of the best pilots in history he landed his plane in a river with a tailwind keep in mind and turned it into a boat, didnt even sink WOW!!! Sully for Prez 2012
excellent upload !!! good job Captain, you saved the day !! good call on not turning south or north over land, water was the best bet !!!! ive been in piper cubs and comanches and cessnas and you cant appreciate enough what it takes to make god calls under shitty conditions, until you see someone make a good call under shitty conditions.
Because they merged with America West Airlines. It is kind of stupid to call an airline like that "Cactus". I think USAir should have kept their callsign.
Didn't they depart runway 31? Or is it 34? instead of runway 04 at La Guardia.

I am not so sure, but the ATC seemed least bothered when he said Radar Contact lost, shouldnt he be worried he lost a plane?

@rahulras At low altittude it is normal to lose radar contact, so it's not a clear sign of a crash yet.
