I saw Mel Brooks speak at a screening of Blazing Saddles a few years ago. He said that, after an in-studio screening, the execs handed him a list of all the potentially offensive lines with the directive "Take them all out!" but Brooks and his co-writers took none of them out. Then, at the first public test screening, the audience fell on the flooor luaghing, and the studio guys gave up trying to edit the film.

The studio executives made him sit through a meeting where they basically decided to reshoot the whole movie with a "cleaned-up" script, but Brooks' contract had said explicitly that would have total control of the project. He sat through the meeting, diligently taking notes. Then as he was leaving the room he tossed them in the garbage.

@BillClausen I would agree with you about "Political Correctness" stifles honest discussion on this point but overall the elimination of the words nigger, chink, and other ethnic slurs helps to reduce ethnic tensions in the longterm. There is theory behind the "PC" movement which really isn't a movement at all.
