Veda is such a strange character and I have so much respect for her to have tackled this role. I watched every part on the edge of my seat waiting to see if she was being sincere or not (of course she never was :P) and every time was convinced she was. Great job!

I thought Kate Winslet was terrific in this movie but Evan Rachel didn't impress me much. With the character of Vera, there's no way of getting around the evil daughter bit, it's too strongly characteristic of the role to be an ungrateful, bitchy, money loving schemer. I also felt that Evan sounded too much like Kate speech-wise sometimes; it was hard to tell them apart and they have the same hair color and similar looks. Kate does look like she could be Evan's mom!!

I watched evan rachel woods preformance last night on the mini series and she wwas UNBELIEVABLE. I can honestly say she took some of kate winslets shine away in some scenes, and that is very hard to do. Some say her acting was a little too dramatic, but thats how veda was! She was a perfect actress for this and i was so impressed , great job evan!!!

Thanks for posting! From what I've read this new TV miniseries is MUCH more faithful to the book than the '45 Warner Bros/Joan Crawford classic. There's even a scene where Kate/Mildred gives Evan/Veda a good old fashioned over the knee spanking (which is in the original novel)! Kudos to HBO for taking a chance on a 30's Depression era novel!

Hopefully this role will bring ERW the praise she deserves as one of the best actresses alive right now. in fact...far from it.

her acting is nothing spectacular and she overacts a great deal, it seems so forced at times.

when she's on screen I just remember I'm watching an actress with cameramen all around her. she acts the same for every role, with no depth.

she was good in thirteen and as sophie anne in true blood (but only in the third season, in the second she's awful).
