ingestthebest, my post was over the top, shouldn't have posted what i did. There are so many keyboard warriors posting nonsense on youtube, i just get tired of it sometimes.
You shouldn't have to apologize, buddy. Truth is, the appealing part of powerlifting is the camaraderie. Without that, you only have envious gym rats. You spoke the truth man. But even you have to admit that it is unfair to say that a man can't be athletic based solely on his squatting style and technique.
I am actually fairly athletic. I've been good in one area or another in every sport I've ever tried depending on what i wanted to specialize in. Football, I was a decent linebacker. Baseball, I could hit a home run with ease. Soccer, I could outrun pretty much everyone as well as having good coordination. Basketball is really the only place I ever failed and that's because I'm not black. But I only squat with this stance to a bench or box. I squat conventionally for parallel or ATG.
@ingestthebest , your comment has to be one of the stupiest things I've ever read on the internet. So you're saying this guy is not athletic because of his squat stance?? You are either just jealous or are an idiot, which is it?
@OzarksAR i guess i could be jealous, that is alot of weight. but mostly i'm pointing out the fact that alot of people think that weight lifting makes them look athletic, when it dosent, it just makes them fit.
theres nothing wrong with that, just don't front like an athlete because when you walk away rigidly or awkwardly you just make yourself look like a dildo for making a claim like that.
but i suppose it could be that i'm just a jealous idiot.
But it truly is unfair of you to say someone is not athletic just solely because they lift, don't you think? I played sports well before I ever lifted and did very well with them. I still do well when I play, but I just pay more attention now on fighting and powerlifting than I do on football, etc.
just one last random thought for you here... your regular stance squat is too narrow, your wide stance squat is too wide. I dont know how tall you are, but it should be somewhere inbetween... If you can get your hips below paralell raw, thats your perfect position.
the reason your legs drive up fast in the dead lift is because you have very weak hams and low back. That is probably due to squatting close stance, using stretch reflex and quads to move the weight. Im out of characters again......
Maybe you're right. But my lower back is fairly strong. That's how I deadlift. It's just what has worked for me. Plus, how is my wide stance too wide? If you look at Vogelpohl's stance, it's far wider than mine and he's much shorter than me. I am 6'2".
@cyberkai99 Um, probably kinda pointless to get into it. Im a young guy too, I understand its very difficult to take the criticism. Just giving my opinion for no reason.
Without a bench or box, I squat much more narrow. My thighs touch when I squat without a box or bench. I use this sumo stance with a bench or box to help strengthen the glutes and the hamstrings.
work up to 110% of your max off of a high pin, then you can drop the pin some to build more confidence. Above 110% is pointless. Whomever can argue all you want wink wink. Your main focus should be sitting back, pausing on the pins, and keeping your chest up so that you are using your hips as much as possible.
HAHAHAHA! I'm with you on that one man. Although Gene Rychlak has really cleaned the fed up a lot. Donnie Thompson just missed his WR attempt squat at 1255 and that was the closest to depth I have ever seen him get to and they still red-lighted him. Fairly impressed by that. But this squat is actually only 2-4 inches high. I did it to practice my walkout with heavier weights and I'm sure you noticed how shaky I was. Just training for that. Any tips?
doing pin squats is a great movement to improve your walkout. It will give you more confidence with the weight, and even if you pass out under it, the pins will stop you, haha. Also, squatting off the pins will build more contractile strength which has much more benefit then just walking out a heavy weight and bouncing it off of a high pin, or just walking it out and holding the weight.
Also Dave, don't bring my dog into this. My dog has been wonderful to me. He's sweet as can fucking be and now you're trying to throw pathetic insults to make up for YOUR physical weaknesses. As for not commenting on your videos. There was a long period where I didn't comment on anybody's videos because I was dealing with my own issues. It wasn't just you. I am going to delete your comment about my dog now. Bring it back up Dave and I will be interested in meeting you in person.
It wasn't necessarily an attack on you, but you told Chris in one of my videos that squatting to a bench is harder than squatting than without one and that simply isn't the case. I did 25 pounds over my best squat without a bench and I did it without wraps. And actually I used to squat very deep. Before I ever video taped my workouts (early 11th grade), I was famous for squatting 3-6 inches below parallel). But I posted the last squat workout of me doing a fairly easy 365 to legit depth.
another thinkg.dont tell me what is the case and waht isnt. everybody is different. there isnt much difference between my box squat and my parralel squat. fresh i can atg squat 275..and a 275 atg squat is 300-315 parralel squat..i did 290 below parralel whe n iwas atg squatting 245. so 15 pounds difference in my comp squat vs bx squat.
and you go a whole eyar not commenting on any of my fucking vids..even though ive been posting great progress,ad then leave a comemnt laughing at my squat
The difference between your ATG, box, and comp squat doesn't matter to me. What matters to me is your comp squat. That's going to be what decides the difference between who squats more. My 400 squat (365 with a better angle and not too much difficulty) or your 330 "1/2 inch above parallel" squat to a bench. That's what we're dealing with here.
So you saying that I've never squatted deep in my life is asinine. I may not squat as deep as you anymore (I may never have), but one thing is for sure. My squat depth would pass in competition and we both know that's all that matters. Also, about my deadlift. I never made jackasstic claims that hitching is harder than hitchless deadlifts. I know what I am doing is easier and I know I can't pull as much as you without a hitch, but at least I admit it.
@cyberkai99 i never said i could squat or bench as much as you. you have me beat on those...you can probably atg squat as much as me as well. you did 280 deep squat pretty easily so i bet you could get it atg.
you and is seem to be closer on rows than anything. we do around the same on db rows. althugh last time i did 150sx4 i was a lot weaker i think my deadlift was down to like 370 hahah now im sure ill be doing 440 easily in two weeks..im a crazy guy so my goal is 2 reos.
Close on rows? I've done as much as 175's X 8 and 190's X 6. I think I'm a little further then you there as well, but my row is nowhere near what it used to be and I can tell it's affecting me because my deadlift is making it's way backwards somewhat.
@cyberkai99 my god dude you really are a prick arent you..... i try to be nice even though i dont think you can do more than me on atg squats...and then i try to make you feel better about your back strength and you come back with an asinine remark. i did 185 barbell row with one hand at 160 when i was WEAK....if you wanna compete on rows ill be happy to try 190s....although you struggled with your 155s so i think claiming you could do 190s is a little crazy
I did those 155 dumbbell rows after I lost 54 pounds in 26 days after Anna left me. I had a 990 total at that point in time, and if you don't believe me, I will prove it to you. I haven't done rows in a while, but give me one month. In one months time, I will post a video of myself doing a 200 pound dumbbell row for at least 5 reps. As for my back strength, I don't need compliments. I'm very satisfied with my strength at my age and weight and certainly with only 2-3 years training.
Like what? Ever since my fiance left me, I have forgotten a ton about training. I probably don't know half of what I used to know. And I have certainly taken notice to the shakiness of my squatting. Quite peculiar to me.
@cyberkai99 well youll find someone else. college is full of hoot chicks...although a lot of them leave after classs so i never get to say anything.it sucks pretty bad
Thanks Philip. I've actually squatted 460 to a box before (wrapped), but I just needed to give my joints a break while still training my strength because if you look at the difference in depth here and parallel, the knee wraps should give me enough pop out of the bottom to possibly squat this to parallel soon.

nice work gavin! you should try a 12 inch box sometime they are hard as hell!

@WeightLifterNerd you think they are hard try a 9 or 10 inch box
thats shits crazy lol
BIGDADDYJOHNSON27 1 year ago
I may give those a go at some point, or an ATG box squat haha!
WeightLifterNerd 1 year ago
@WeightLifterNerd yeah the only reason why i use a 10 inch box
is to build strength out of the hole for my regular squats.
BIGDADDYJOHNSON27 1 year ago
Good work Gavin! That's a lot of weight at your low bodyweight bro.Man you have a small waist, what do u measure around the waist?

I have a 28" waistline the last time I measured it (weighing around 168) and I weigh around 174 right now, so I reckon I'm around 29" or so.
