I did a freediving course a couple of years ago. They said 100% of students do 3 mins in the pool on the 2nd or 3rd day. I didn't really believe them because I thought I could only do a couple of minutes but I actually managed 4:06 and another guy did 5:05 with just a day or two's training. It's all about relaxation and an effective breath-up before you start.
shell divers do this shit everyday, some of them can go as long as 8 minutes, one japanese man could do 10 minutes. Sure its very dangerous to do this alone in the ocean at 15m depths but this, although pretty impressive, isnt jack shit compared to those divers. I imagine they got so good at it by doing this exact same thing several times a day for many years
@makkie211175 my goal was to make 5 minutes. This was my second attempt. As I have zero sense of time while underwater I needed him to help with keeping time.
@SpartanLV I completely agree. There is no need to do this to your body, Its just not good. The brain needs oxygen, when you take it away, it starts getting damaged.
@sneaeky Your brain isn't deprived of oxygen when you pass out. It doesn't happen right away. Usually it's about 5 mins until the brain becomes deprived enough that there's brain damage. If the brain had no oxygen at any one minute, of course it'd be catastrophic.
@sneaeky Eh... yeah i dunno. Oxygen is needed for the brain to survive right? So passing out is a defense mechanism, because using oxygen derives energy for the brain, right? If you are conscious, you are using more energy than if you are unconscious. It's physics!
Scientists don't want to put this sort of thing to the test because they'd be accused of as fascists by the likes of you, probably. xD
@sneaeky Also, a mishap is my PC shutting down on occassion and being crappy in general (the cd drive is scummy and the internals smell of toilet grease).
@SpartanLV Brain damage doesn't occur consciously when due to oxygen deprivation. You will always pass out before then - blacking out is a reflex the body uses - if you haven't swallowed water, then it will be very easy to start breathing again when you're unconscious, because breathing is an automated function. When you black out, it's like having the conscious functions go into hibernation and then (safely) rebooting. Google is your friend. :)
@artics123 there is a reason i edited my video after i surfaced... it looked scary the way the body twitches... i may be calm but the body by that point is fighting against you. i tried emailing you about a question. email me mermaidmelissa at gmail
@TheBeki98 static breathholding and swimming breathholding are very different things and you will get different time results. static = not moving. for static be relaxed and calm and don't move. HOWEVER, I have heard that holding your breath WHILE being active (swimming etc) builds lung capasity and can increase breathholding time. I would research more into the people that do this professionally and see if they have any advice or tips.
@MFKOD1 Most of the time my mind kinda wanders off into a day dream or a meditative state. It's actually pretty relaxing for me. I listen to the sounds of the water moving. When the spasms start it's mind over matter. I clamp my hands over my mouth and nose because my body feels like it is breathing. My throat is locked so i wouldn't breath in water anyway but the hands take away any feelings of anxiety, restoring a sense of calm and I focus on being calm, and relaxed.
@artics123 I wouldn't say it was comforty at the end, but I don't find it painful either. Just weird feeling. This attempt was pushing myself to max. With no diver in the tank with me I would have come up at 4 and half minutes on my own, aware and standing. This attempt the diver had to lift me to air and scream at me for 5 seconds to get me to unlock my throat to breathe. I was definitly NOT aware of my surrounds at that point. It took me 40-60 seconds to come back to real awareness.
@MovetwisterProd at around 3:45 my diaphram and etc are going through spasms. which happens during Apnea. I've read that the people with the super high records at Apnea can go through several rounds of these spasms. Rock on Record Holder, rock on!!!
Surprised to find this on youtube. This video is not faked. I know this because that's ME! Freaking AWESOME. I wanted to go as long as I possibly could. And this was it. It was a challenge to myself. My non-extreme attempts were 4min30seconds. I'm glad this got posted.
@6Bene the world record is very high, past 10 minutes. 4:54 WAS and IS my record. I pushed my limit twice for this. I stick to stopping when my body tells me too, usually around 4 to 4:30.
@ncsastro That is a video compression problem. You are welcome to track down the orignal DVD of this and order one from the videographer. I know it's real because I was there.
@spidersrock2 This has been one of my favourite clips since I bought the original. Awesome accomplishment. Love the way you fought through the urge to come up for as long as possible. Great determination. Do you still practise?
