Such a great song and yet there is so much hostility. Regardless of one's beliefs, Christmas is the celebration of Jesus Christ's birth and although this song was written as a plea for peace, the lyric's imply the story of Jesus' birth.
@ShinoAburome37 that girl should not butt into your business you are right. You should believe what you want. But you still shouldn't insult another religion no matter what you believe
Despite the Christian imagery in this song, it was originally written as a plea for peace in response to the Cuban Missile Crisis. That said, who cares if it's about God or not? Christmas songs, secular or not, make me happy.
Stop letting your religion interfere with your Christmas spirit.
I think that the good things about the Christian faith make the Christmas spirit such a joyful and happy experience, but that's just my opinion :) Nevertheless, it's wonderful how Christmas always knows to provide us a time to look forward to, for atheists and Christians.
@oleander1705 Different things make everyone happy. Personally, I'm happy to just have that "Christmas feeling" of solidarity and spending time with people I love. But yes, I do agree with you, it's a wonderful time of year.
This is probably my favorite Christmas song, but I'm pretty partial to Baby, It's Cold Outside as well. How about you?
@SaltwaterAir1 The comment he made was 4 months ago, and I think nearly everyone can agree that hymnals should be stuck to more classical composure. To me, hearing country-pop stars trying to value some of these great songs in ways that just aren't typical. Does this mean they are wrong? Absolutely not. This just simply means that majority of people do not have the taste for it, why do you thing many singers rarely come out with more than one festive soundtrack?
@shatzyu You're right there. I am also an atheist, and to me, Christian Religious Christmas songs are amazing by the right singer. I think Christmas has NOTHING to do with Christ. It has to do with families being together and being happy, That's Christmas to me, not the idiotic dogma that is Christianity.
@ShinoAburame37 Soooo...you took a holiday (main purpose is to celebrate Jesus' birth), then...switched it all around accustomed to what you want it to be.... It doesn't work that way. And if it's about celebrating with family, do it everyday of the year. Don't choose one day. And out of all days, a RELIGIOUS holiday.
@humannaturedj OK let me end this discussion, since you're obviously christian. 1. As an atheist, I have no belief in the notion that Jesus was the son of a fairy king in the sky. Fantastical theories need fantastical proof, and There is NO physical proof of god. 2. Who are YOU to tell ME what Christmas is supposed to mean to ME and MY family? Bit egotistical of you I think.
@ShinoAburame37 Yes, I am a Christian. I am not trying to have a religious debate or try to convert you because that would be impossible. That is not my mission. But it honestly makes no logical sense to use a RELIGIOUS holiday to celebrate family. That's like me celebrating "family" on Ramadan. I love my family as well and it's nice to see that you appreciate yours so much. But what you said makes not an ounce of sense.
@humannaturedj I also think you missed half of my fucking argument, I'M AN ATHEIST!! I don't "Believe" in god. There's absolutely NO fucking proof, and what's with the attitude that you need to believe in this bullshit to be a good person? FUCK THAT! I know that science WORKS, So I will continue to use THAT as a "Belief" if you will, even though I don't NEED to believe in it at ALL, as its assertions can be PROVEN to me.
@ShinoAburame37 And I think you're clearly illiterate because I previously stated that I am not here to convert you into a Christian or any type of religious person. (what is common sense is my initial argument, go back to refresh your tired memory). I don't care what you believe in. And I'm not gonna force my beliefs on you because neither one of us truly know. I never said you weren't a good person either, so stop trying to twist words to make yourself look correct. Try again.
@humannaturedj ahem, I state AGAIN. I'm an ATHEIST! therefore, The religious notions BEHIND christmas, are something I don't believe in. Sorry that I didn't make that clear earlier, that was obviously my own fucking fault, But I read what you said, I obviously didn't make it clear enough to you, which, again, was my own fault. Also, When I said "What's with the attitude that you need to believe in this bullshit to be a good person?" Did I mean to say that you thought me
@ShinoAburame37 to be a bad person. I meant that as an evaluation of MANY a christian that I've talked to that made that assertion, Which I also shouldn't have done in this argument, as that asserts that you are like every christian, which you aren't. In conclusion, Don't tell me how to celebrate, I don't believe in god or any of the dogma associated with him, including christmas, AND I obviously need to work on my debate skills a little, as I come off disjointed and confused.
@humannaturedj Also, How DARE you try to tell me how to celebrate my love for my family. I sir, do NOT appreciate that, as it's MY FAMILY to celebrate with, not yours. If you wish to celebrate Christmas the way you THINK it was intended, go ahead and do so. But NEVER try to tell someone else how to do so, its high and mighty, egotistical, ignorant, and just plain WRONG!
A child shivers in the cold? so sad :( reminds me when i was in the cold snow by my self when i was 4 yrs old no sliver or gold thankful i was found now 23yrs old HAIL KING JESUS! MERRY CHRISTMAS! ALL AROUND THE WORLD! AND OTHER WORLDS!
I know it won't sound so intimate being over the internet, but I really want to wish everyone out there, everyone, an especially Merry Christmas. May all your New Year dreams come true. Remember that there really are such things as second chances and don't be afraid to hope for the future. God love you. :)
@TenderTrap86 it's one year later, but thanks for the good wishes. Best wishes for THIS Christmas and New Year...you chose a beautiful way to express your hopes. I wish EVERYBODY the best for the festive season this year, and good luck for 2012! (kiss kiss, if you are a girl, lol!)
@champagnestevie Actually, "hug, hug" I'm a 6 foot 2, 185 pound, 25 year old man who moves furniture and works in demolition and disaster clean-up... and I'm strait.. lmao
Pray for me this Christmas season? I'm guilty of so many transgressions. And, I'm terrified of taking the next steps in my life. I believe I've accomplished a lot this past year, but I know I'm capable of so much more.
Thank you for returning kindness.
A very Merry Christmas to you and all those you love.
Mr Crosby was very sensitive to the possibility he might be perceived as commercializing or profiting off Christmas music, especailly the more religious music. If you look at his original vinyl Christmas records you will find the more secular christmas songs (like frosty the snowman or rudolph) are on one side of the record and the more sacred songs llike O Come all ye faithful and Silent Night are on teh other side...
My absolute favorite Christmas song, and my absolute favorite version. Everything is perfect in this - Bing's vocals, the instrumentation, the back-up vocals, and the lovely dynamic build-up to the final verse.
When it comes to the part about the baby Jesus shivering & they're like let us bring him silver & gold I'm always thinking 'yeah coz that'll totally help with his shivering.'
I've heard this song every Christmas season since before I can remember. And only now have I gotten the idea to look it up on Youtube. Great song, one of my favorites.
@waWeeWaWoo53 well the song does have some negative points. A sheep talking to the shepherd boy about some voice some the trees and the boy understands it, the boy must have been on drugs or something. Also the boy, tells the king that baby Jesus is born and is cold and tell him not to bring him a blanket, but sliver and gold. But anyways, even though the song uses useless personification, it still is a perfect Christmas song. I love it and many people do :-) Merry Christmas and God bless.
I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH BECAUSE THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT JESUS I CAN TELL BECAUSE JESUS BROUGHT US GOODNESS AND LIFE HE BROUGHT US THAT FOR TO FORGIVE OUR SINS
its sad that no one ever sings the last verse, do they know why the song was even written? did the cuban missile crisis never happen if we don't pray for peace?
"said the little lamb to he shepard boy"... I think the shepard boy was in the field a little too long. and " a child a child shivers in the cold, let us bring him some silver and gold"........ How 'bout a blanket? Got this off a Tim Hawkins video if you laughed you should check him out.
@jimmy12201 I've been pondering that same point about the blanket thing for a long time. LOL. if it had been a female bringing gifts, she'd have brought him a blanket!
thanks for uploading this song brings back memories for me, of being in 8th grade chorus and singing this at one of our Christmas shows. again thanks so much for uploading
Beautiful song by Bing Crosby who has the best version; Robert Goulet also did a good job with this one on one of his Xmas albums.. Strange footnote: BC recorded the song on the same day that JFK was assassinated in Dallas, TX.
The song was written around the time of the Cubasn Missile Crisis in 1962 as a plea for peace.
@gakski really? that's interesting, it was recorded the same day that JFK was assassinated....pray for peace people everywhere....love this song and RIP JFK
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Everytime it says, Do you hear what I hear or do you see what i see or do you know what i know, i feel like committing sucide. What stupid people write things like that??? And then it is just repeating and repeating and repeating. See what? Hear what? Yah. If the wind can talk to lamb and lamb to boy, the author certainly has schizo.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I love Christmas and I love Christmas songs. But this is one of the worst songs. The music is creepy. Sounds like it is some funeral song. And the lyrics are just downright unacceptable. Just keep on repeating the same thing over and over again.
I love this song, but every time that I hear it I think of when the shepherd boy goes to the king all excitedly and asks him, "Do you know what I know?" The king asks him, intrigued, "Where have you heard this?" The shepherd boy responds..."My lamb told me!" Woe to that king who acts on information from a talking lamb!
@GeniusFusion How can it make you feel like dying? It's one of the best Christmas songs I've ever heard...Is it the song itself that you don't like or is it just this version?

Beautiful song by Bing Crosby who has the best version; Robert Goulet also did a good job with this one on one of his Xmas albums.. Strange footnote: BC recorded the song on the same day that JFK was assassinated in Dallas, TX.
The song was written around the time of the Cubasn Missile Crisis in 1962 as a plea for peace.

Thank God. I'm sick of these little poppy singers' versions of this song and others. Mr. Crosby is a Godsend.

it good to hear the song without crappy pop singers adding unnecessary pizazz like "OOAaaOOhhOOOaaaHH!"

@GeniusFusion...LOL...No one is forcing you to listen to this song, your on this page under your own merit.

Well, just go ahead and commit suicide. 'Cause you're STUPID. Listening to a song you don't like and writing long comments about it.

If a lamb turned to me and said "Do you hear what I hear" I would think I was on PCP.
