Wow is this the same Shona Laing that did new wave songs in the '80s? Impressive how her style changed so much, though I admit I like her synthier stuff much better.
I used to think, about 30 years, ago that this was a relatively plain girl, singing radical songs. Viewing "1905" and "show your love" in 2011 has altered my perspective. She is not only cute, but, if she wrote the lyrics, very beautiful in character. She sends correct messages. She's very, very bright.
Ahead of her time. I mean....the reference to Henry Fonda?? And check out the dates to boot!! All of this from a 16 year old!! Leaves today's shite for shite!!
You're right - I remember her in an interview talking about having a crush on Henry Fonda and how this song was about coming to terms with the difference in time
Later in 1973 she entered the Studio One television competition with a song called "If Only", but this time failed to place.
But that disappointment was soon forgotten when she picked up two RATA Awards, 'Best New Artist' and 'Recording Artist Of The Year". Shona also took top prize at the Tokyo Song Festival with a song called "Masquerade" and was awarded two gold discs for "1905" and "Show Your Love".
@HumanRightsVideosT Well I suppose everyone has their own favorites;when she brought out M I was working at Kawerau construction camp voice of gentleness on the pub j box cant forget
Shona was a 17 year old schoolgirl in 1972. She composed all her own material and after her success on New Faces, Phonogram signed her up to a recording deal.
They released her first single "1905"/"There Are No Words (To Describe)" on the Vertigo label. "1905" peaked at number 4 on the National Charts in February 1973. A second single, "Show Your Love"/"Don't Expect Me To Be Your Friend" also peaked at number 4 in September 1973.
Shona Laing's rise to fame was the result of extensive television exposure. Laing shot to overnight stardom in 1972 singing her way into the New Faces finals with a song called "1905".
Over the next three years Laing collected two gold discs, three RATA Awards and twice represented New Zealand at the Tokyo World Song Festival.
I have a feeling that this film was recorded at the Christchurch Town Hall in 1973 to coincide with its opening and in time for the big Commonwealth Games the following year.
how did I manage to live In Sydney for over 30 years and never see her listed to do a gig?..did she ever perform in OZ?....I know she recorded In Sydney but any gigs??
She certainly had some good exposure in Aust. during the late 80's... often featured on Rock Arena, plus 'Glad I'm not a Kennedy' was a minor hit. Other than that, she is sadly overlooked this side of the Tasman. A shame, coz so many good Kiwi acts have jumped the lake and succeeded.
I must thank you too for putting this on youtube. Shona was always one of my favourites. I first saw this when I was only a kid. I wonder, do you have any Space Waltz..?
Man that takes me back to a few local places. She won Studio One in 1972 with that little number and even with this clip you can actually the quality in her singing voice. nless I'm mistaken, this song was one of about 60 that she had already written before the end of 1971 while she was at Hutt Valley High School.
Thank you KneesTease for posting this. I have loved Shona and this song since it came out. Boy when was that 1970 something. I think she was on a TV talent show and i think she won. It seemed to fit that time in NZ.
Did the NZBC only have one camera to spare back then? And didn't she do this song originally on New Faces or some other talent show? There must be a vid somewhere...

Apparently 1905 is about Henry Fonda, who was born on 16 May 1905.

the rata awards..I had forgotten that.. did you have the albums?

I have 2 of her early LPs. I quite like the song "Neat and Tidy" off one of her later albums.
Soviet Snow was a brilliant song. I think I read that overseas Soviet Snow was highly thought of in some places.
