my servers graphics adapter broke and so i used the already connected LCDs, that normally show music titles, to get the linux system messages for maintainance too.
the displays are connected via USB to the PC that runs a kernel module for that USB2Serial chip (hardware and protocol are my own creation but not hard to build).
There are linux boot options (e.g. console=tty1 console=ttyS0,9600) that link the whole console output to such a serial device so that you can use it as monitor replacement.
