  • lei è così elegante! T'amo Renée!

  • BIANCA CASTAFIORE.

  • mortel!!magnifique!!mais allez écouter partout Renée Fleming, elle est géniale, elle a toujours sa voix de rêve

  • Breathtaking performance- Renee has a magnificent voice :o)

  • Absolutely gorgeous interpretation of Air de Bijoux. In my unsolicited opinion, she is even better than Gheorghiu even if I like both sopranos. Onegin65 you have an exquisite taste in opera video. Please keep doing what you are doing. Thank you for the pleasure you brought to all opera lovers.

  • GAWD, she makes it look so easy. Fml.

  • Très, très belle interprétation.

  • BIANCA CASTAFIORE?

  • To my untrained ears, she is here more than pretty good!

  • better than gheorghiu

  • BRILLIANT SINGER AND PERFORMANCE!

  • What a charming performance! Doesn't Flemming have a lovely creamy tone?

  • She is brilliant!!!!

  • Bravo!

  • Her french is horrible ! Shame !!!

  • Ah, pardon, francophone de pacotille!

  • sometimes she is belting.not a good style.

  • @blauauge2 Eh....maybe we have a different definition of belting, but what she's doing most definitely sounds nothing like the belting I hear people doing on a daily basis, lol. Youtube some Idina, that's belting. Or rather, 'screlting'.

  • @blauauge2 um... no? what the heck are you talking about??

  • @PrincessZerlina about something, that you obviously can´t hear.

  • @blauauge2 Renee has a voice with power behind it, but it is used with classical techniques supporting it. "Belting" is a term that is used for non-operatic music :/

  • @PrincessZerlina i know what belting is.

  • This is Margaret from Faust. She is about to kill her mother, get knocked up, kill her baby, get arrested, and die just to sleep with this guy. This fate could have been avoided if she had a sassy gay friend!

  • Wow, wow,wow!!!!!!

  • thumbs up if Tintin brought you here

  • Fleming singing French opera has always been as beautiful & successful as her Mozart operas. For me, her early career period of Mozart and French opera were her best years and everything after that: bel canto, Verdi verisimo, etc hasn't been any good. Listen for instance to her Manon and Thais. Her Marguerite in Faust, as shown here, is expressive, intense & grand. I miss the days when Fleming could sing as wonderfully as she does here.

  • la meilleure depuis Tebaldi , le timbre et la diction me rappellent un peu l'immense Leyla Gencer. Madame Fleming , je vous adore et pour ne rien gâcher , vous êtes belle à tomber!

  • That's a badass dress.

  • La Flemming !!!! enough already.

  • bravissima! thx for letting me watch this great performance

  • Epoustouflante!!!

  • I don't love her picky and over indulgent was of singing this piece, but THANK YOU GOD that she sings a real trill...it's SO important to the music, and it's so rarely executed well.

  • Just love this! Capitaine Haddock n'y connaît rien!

  • Who came here from Tintin?

  • Very strong and powerful voice. Unfortunately, Margurite is a much too feminine role for this voice.

  • @Bossmanrocks Many big voices and dramatic sopranos have sung Marguerite - Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland, Mirella Freni and Renata Tebaldi. The role is actually dramatic with high registers and even a few lower notes/chest voice, so it's perfectly fine for powerful strong voices. And strong powerful voices still sound feminine. You don't need to be a light little lyric coloratura to sound feminine

  • I like it!!!!!!

  • Wow the beginning and end were awesome. The middle was ok but seems as if she was trying too hard to make it dramatic. Just my opinion. But the beginning- Oh wow.

  • how could this have ANY dislikes?????

  • La Castafiore !

  • i really like her voice in this song but i don't like her interpretation

i don't think marguarite is this erratic

  • her low notes are great, I really enjoyed the interpretation

  • inspiring as a singer

  • i think the accompagnying base in the beginning and the end is awfull

  • Bianca Castafiore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • so great, never get tired of this one!!

  • I love renée since I've seen her perfomance as the comtesse in Le nozze de Figaro.

  • Bravaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Easy to critisize...hard to do!

  • Esta aria es mi preferida desde hace años y fue con Renee Fleming con quien me enamore por completo de ella! e escuchado muchas versiones pero Renee sigue siendo la mejor, sublime!!!

  • so charming!

  • Renee Fleming has some good moments and some bad ones. This is one of the good ones. She makes a great Marguerite. Her Jewel Aria is romantic, grand and very strong. Loved it!

  • as amazing as this is, the voiceover guy at the end steals the show with his pronunciation of 'oh dieu que de bijoux'

  • LOl That was hilarious..O Dio que de bi-JOE

  • @MastersoftheOpera where do they find these people? I'd do much better hosting an opera event, because I actually know opera, and CAN PRONOUNCE FRENCH! I'm sure they try to find actual newscaster type people though...

  • At last. I have always wanted to know that I enjoyed something by Renee. I thought she did a good job here. I think Renee should relax. I sometimes think she tries too hard. I do like this one. Yes! Wonderful!

  • this aria and her "chi il bel sogno di doretta" made me completely fall in love with her...

  • Once again, La Fleming nails it! Wonderful interpretation of an old warhorse. She makes it sound fresh.

  • i still prefer bianca castafiore's rendition.

  • Stop criticizing that which you cannot do youself. It's not a game, every artist who steps on the stage , the world stage, is there because they have earned the right. shirleysvoice.

  • @shirleysvoice if u truly believe that, ur woefully gullible.....

  • @shirleysvoice

I am totally with you, and you are not gullible. Your critic, allstatebass, is just not as smart as you are.

  • @shirleysvoice Nonsense! In that case, i'd never have any opinion on films or theatre,(i'm not an actor or director...),restaurants,(i love good food but i'm an indifferent cook..), sport, literature, cars......or in fact anything where i'm not professional! Most people in the world would not be allowed opinions on most things by your reasoning.

  • @shirleysvoice THANK YOU!

  • HA! I mean Renee! Ha! My Bad.

  • She has a beautiful voice - not over done and her mannerisms are not lacking, nor distracting (a la some other sopranos -- love them to death but they are annoying to watch). As far as the criticisms and superfluous comments that are more about style than technique- you sing the song, post it, do a better job, and then you can criticize.

This is a b*&#h of a song to sing... and she does a fantastic interpretation of it. Good on ya, Rene!

  • Si bien esta aria se escucha mejor en una Ligera, que puede hacer piruetas, y acrobacias, con la voz, pero no puedo dudar que RENEE ES MARAVILLOSA!!!!! Hace una adaptacion bella.

  • ..she has a beautiful Mozart voice but she borrowed styles (Sutherland/Price/Caballe. and God knows who else..she had her own sound of course but it's not at the level of the forementioned ladies...she also couldnt act her way out of a bag! Has she sung all of marguerite in Faust ? She was careful and picked out only a few roles because she probably doesnt have enough discipline or acting talent for something like Lucia...Violetta was her big challenge ? come on!

  • Why be so critical? Aside from Sutherland you rarely hear somene sing this aria with such an effortless and natural trill. :) Yes, she sang this role several times in New York and also in Paris.

  • hah!

you make me laugh big idiot.... ok, stop criticizing her and show me how much better you can do??

    SHUT UP!

  • Thanks a lot for those who gave me their opinion about Renee Fleming's book. I will try to find it in Quebec.

  • Love her and her trills, but why does she had some weird rythms (just after the trill) and ways to attack some notes (high A on the second «Ah! je ris»). Anyway, I admire her technique.

By the way, does someone has read her book «The inner voice»? Is it interesting?

  • her book is amazing! i highly recommend it :)

  • REad the book! Every performer out there should read that book! Great book very interesting!!!

  • She's so great!

  • Wow, simply amazing!

One can always criticize her rendition but I think she really gets you there...

  • lol nice call.

  • beautiful performance, thanks for your post!

  • I don't care what anyone says! This is perfection all the way! She is charming, engaging, and technically amazing. Brava Renee!

  • My bad. High "b"

  • Gorgeous voice but a little too self-assured interpretation for the shy and astonished girl that Margarete still is in this scene.

An unclean scooped attack on the high A of the second "Ah je ris..." both times.

For someone with such care for a good trill and in general technically as aware as she is, why does she let details like that go through!?

  • LOVE her! She's so good here!

  • Soppy, self-indulgent, mewing...a great voice, but no sense of style. Good trill, though, which is not common in this piece.

  • actually it is. especially in the beginning.

  • What absolute rubbish, this is absolutely exquisite, and being French myself, her diction is absolutely perfect. It's fun, gay, irrisitible. Bravo Divine Fleming, Gounod a du penser à vous en composant cet air.

  • Well, I didn't say anything about her French diction. I am sure it is lovely. I get absolutely nothing from her interpretation. To each his own, I guess.

  • its better than Netrebko's

  • doesn't take much to be better than Netrebko's lol

why would someone without a trill even try to do this aria simply beats me

  • obviously nooot!!

  • @sweetaztecangel69 Better than Netrebko's and just about everyone else.

  • @GEMahler Renee shows that even though you have a bigger voice you can be just as flexible and that inspires me :]

  • @sweetaztecangel69

    but not better than GHEORGHIU:)

  • @silviutz28 much better than Gheorghiu.....I like Gheorghiu very much but her top notes don't sound as secure anymore IMO....I prefer Renee Fleming over her everyday...she sang this aria live in California not that long ago and it was better than this...it was fan-freaking-tastic :]

  • @sweetaztecangel69

    i like fleming too

its true , angela is loosing slowly her powers...but i love her. maybe because she is my compatriote also:p

  • @silviutz28 Renee's technique is amazing...she's had a career for what 20+ years and her voice hasn't really changed at all....IMO I think Gheorghiu had her time and if she keeps singing the way she is she could really hurt herself....

  • @sweetaztecangel69

well, till then , gheorghiu is still very demanded in opera houses... when she will be to old, she will retire.

here is an hilare moment whit fleming doing an interview with AG. its sad how poor is gheorghiu in expressing her ideeas and feelings in english . i love her when she talk in romanian.

    watch?v=02h6lEFgup4&feature=related

she is very natural here for example:

    watch?v=pbTTb0-A-qA&feature=related

  • @sweetaztecangel69 actually if you listen to a recording from like 10 years or over you'll find that she once had a very youthful sound to her voice. in one recording i didn't even recognize her voice. it was still gorgeous, just different.

  • @sweetaztecangel69

    but not better than Gheorghiu

  • @sb2011100 Id have to disagree....at that point it would be a matter of personal taste

  • @sweetaztecangel69

Most everything is better than Netrebko, IMO.

  • @ScorpionGrasshopper agreed :]

  • @sweetaztecangel69 elle n'a pas de mal à être mieux

  • @ininacsot never said it was a bad thing....I love Renee Fleming's voice so :] and sorry Im not fluent in french but I understood some of it :]

  • @sweetaztecangel69 "I laugh to see myself so beautiful", she sings, and she's in ecstasy trying out jewels and looking at herself in the mirror. She wishes that Faust would see her. She's a poor village girl who now looks like a princess "fille d'un roi" daughter of a king; but it was an illusion-trap that the Devil put for her.

  • She is so great! And her eyes are crossing when she sings the C! hahaha

  • i love how expressive she is.

  • I like Fleming's version. I like to hear her attack on the "Ah" after the trill. Most singers dont hit it that hard. Guess thats what makes her unique. She makes the aria fun.

  • Renee you are perfect, every thing this amazing woman sings thrills me each time over and over again she gives me chills every time I hear her.Brava!

  • Je trouve que la voix de Renée Fleming ne convient pas à cet air. Par ailleurs, elle surjoue beaucoup trop. Néanmoins, les coloratures sont bien assurées.

  • Renee's version is good..very impressed that she sounds just like the recording..with a couple of mannerisms in this one but none that are too different...I however prefer Angela's version..i just feel that her timbre is better suited for this song and especially when she nails the High B..renee's voice is too dramatic and dark for this song.

  • Have you sung this role professionally? Do you regularly perform at world-renowned opera houses? If you do, I accept your criticism. If not, perhaps you could just admit that your comments are merely personal preference and not denigrate performers other people enjoy listening to?

  • This is incredible! Bravo :)

  • I've loved this song since I saw it in Phantom - Beautifully done. Bravisima!

  • Incredible

  • workin workin workin!!!

  • i disagree: we must remember the great divas of the 40s 50s & 60s & unfortunately not compare them to our new crop who must be judged against among themselves. renee fleming is a fine soprano, terrific personality & actress. brava fleming!!!!!

  • I love her voice, and how she interprets many of her roles. She's more than a fine soprano, she's a great one. I didn't compare her to anyone else in this role, only to the character itself, musically speaking. She is an accomplished actress also. As for her personality, I've never met her, so I cannot comment. As an artist, I too say brava!

  • i have met her & her personality offstage shines thru her stage performances: she is fun, lighthearted & not at all a diva in the worst sense; downtoearth & delightful. she is my current favorite in her category! (& im a sutherland/tebaldi/callas fan from the old days!)

  • Indeed. In her interviews she seems to be very humble about her enormous talent, and very natural. Her performance of O mio babbino caro, here on YouTube, received raves from me. Her Tatyana is peerless. In the role of Marguerite, however, my heart belongs to Victoria de los Angeles.

  • as i said, mio caro, we cannot dwell on the elder divas as all of us elder opera mavens have a great tendency to do; forget de los angeles as ive had to forget past great performances: she is wht we have not now--we must live in the now & cry when we play our old vinyls! viva la fleming! (et al)

  • The worst thing perhaps, is so good an aural memory, that singers years dead or retired sing along in our heads when someone new comes along. Sometimes these old voices are just better but not always. Renee Fleming must be in a top (how many?) of sopranos since recording started. We are so priviledged in this multi media world that we can enjoy so much past and present.

  • Oh shut up.
