Desert combat is a mod for 1942 that completely reworks it and incorporates modern stuff into the game.

That doesn't matter. Desert combat's setting is the first gulf war, while BF2 is more or less the operation we are carrying out now in Iraq, plus they incorporated a fight with China. They also came out about half a year apart, so BF2 was probably already in the works when Desert Combat came out.
