Makes me laugh how Martin harks on about how good the car feels "no wonder he was so succesful" he being Senna - no credit on the driver. He did the same with Michael Schumacher. I think he is just a very bitter man at the fact he didn't achieve a tenth of the success of those legends.
@JRRacing85 Maybe...but lets see, that Brundle was the only real opposition Senna had in 1983 in the British F3 and they both got into F1 in 1984. Both nearly won a GP that year(Senna at Monaco, Brundle at Detroit), but Brundle than had his accident and also Tyrrell team was banned for using lighter cars. And that spoiled surely Martin´s career. He had the talent, as in 1988 he replaced Mansell in Belgium and dominated the wet qualifing on friday...
@AlejjSi Agreed, Martin would've won races for sure had he not had such a bad crash, and had he been able to see out all of the 1984 season, and start climbing the ranks like Senna did.
@JRRacing85 I don't think he's bitter at all. He never tries to elevate himself above Senna or Schumacher - he's admitted before that they are absolutely better drivers than him. If Martin was so embittered, he wouldn't be so deeply involved with Formula One still.
@kriklan49 lol. They probably run the engine at very low boost these days to reduce wear as much as possible.
Formula one engines are only really intended to last 1 race weekend before requiring a rebuild. If they ran the engine at full boost (1200bhp) It would probably last only a few laps!
@wks1978 Yeah, I know. I hear that and I see it in the way he drives that car. But it still shows how skilled you had to be, to drive a car like this properly. Just imagine, the driver had to shift manualy ( with rev. match or heal toe) while undergoing forces like in the modern F1 cars, otherwise, he would lose the revelations - boost - power - time.
89 turbos were allready banned. 88 and 87 they were allready restricted, so 86 was the perfect choice because it was the last year, when turbos were unrestricted. in my opinion 1986 was THE turbo year and one of the best seasons in f1 history.
Are you trying to make some specific point here? Most drivers come from a background that allowed them to get some experience behind the wheel of proper cars. You're not going to have any impoverished individual work their way up into a Grand Prix vehicle without some heavy financial assistance along the way.
@opmike343 Financial asistance is one thing, being a son of landowner in brazil with to much money, driven his daddies car at 12 y. in brazil is other.
I bet 10.000 brazilians exist that can drive better. But it does not matter. Race drives mostly, specially F1 today, consist of adult with boys mind, if not, boys! They no men...... They 19 year old :P Naieve as can be. To ram eachother also at 200 km plus for a position is racing is simply dumb.
bishopsfarewell - actually they did race them at the same time. In the early 1980s. The Ferrari Flat 12s and Alfa Romeo V12s/Matra V12s raced against Renault V6 Turbos!
@bob333336 Some 1986 cars were putting in qualifying trim about 1500 Bhp in race trim i think it was around 900 Bhp. (1986 was the year they produced the highest Bhp ).
@TheLloydA1 Yes I know. But they were estimates, no dyno at the time could register the real horsepower. They topped out at 1100. So they estimated that the 98T, nearing the end of its engine development put out a theoretical 1600hp in qualifying trim when they replaced valves with caps.
@comali2212 I never ever want to.. he was the way he was... he was... and will always be... 34, incredible, handsome and astonishing. End of as far as I'm concerned.
@agustin18T que buen frase viejo...seria tan bello ver al magico quizas corriendo contra todos estos chicos que el auto hace gran parte de su trabajo.Los tiempos del magico y el turbo son una epoca dorada para los que amamos la velocidad
vikirad - atrocious is a massive word lol. A v16 BRM was atrocious to drive, but in 1986 a v6 twin turbo Lotus was an incredible car in qualifying, only a second off a 2000 f1 car, also in qualifying trim. Thats not bad is it! - you have a point, but it wasn't that far off.
Sorry, they aren't. They might have had mega-power, but compared to the F1 cars of today, they were atrocious things to handle. Despite the size of those wings, they didn't really produce all that much downforce: the front wings were rather underdeveloped and the undertrays weren't as effective as they are now.
0:17 - is that Niki Lauda at the left?????

Imagine what F1 engineers could do if the FIA removed engine and aero regulations. I think cars could easily top the 500 km/h barrier.
