  • best of the best .oss.jka.

  • Nakayamas Shotokan

  • Definetely the best Heian Kata video I know.

It's refreshing to see Kata without superfast, superhectic and exaggerated movements that seem to be the norm in sports Karate. No matter what people say and what the current fashion may be, Osaka and co will remain my Kata reference.

  • OMG! i have met osaka in real person!!!

  • This is actually a very fluid version of Shotokan, great work

  • unglaublich gut!!!! Ich liebe Karate

  • Is it just Shotokan that, or all karate that you think is shit?

Lyoto Machida isn't doing to badly with his trad. karate background. MMA fighters are now having to study trad technique to find a way to defeat him. Kind of destroys your arguments.

The man fights, not the art. It is how we apply what we have learned that makes it combat effective.

  • Styles or schools don't determine if they are good or better than others. What determines that are the practicioners and martial artists. For example the new Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida " The Dragon" is a black belt shotokan. No style is better, it depends on the people who practice and perfection the art.

  • Machida is black belt in BJJ so he know how to defend against takedowns etc.shotokan doesnt train you against that.doesnt have drills against low kicks, roundhous punches etc.only ipon/gohon kumite against oi-tsuki..what a shit

  • That depends on the instructor.

In the kata's are several defenses and counters against takedowns, low kicks, roundhouse punches and other cheap shots.

    About machida:

machida fights all the way as a karate fighter, not as a BJJ fighter in spirit and fighting style.

Oh, and shotokan karate still is in the top 3 of most effective fighting arts(Published in several magazines in the end of 2008), together with bjj and muay thai.

    learn before you speak.

  • shotokan is just a sport.show me video of shotokan students practice real life attacks and not only oi/gyaku tsuki!

  • In my Shotokan karate class, I use the katas and basics to practice striking, throws, takedowns, grappling, submissions etc.

The Sport aspect of Karate is popular because it supplied a safe environment to test your rudimentary skill of punching or kicking. The competition may not appeal to westerners, but is a very Japanese martial art sport. "1 hit, 1 kill" This is not to say the competitors did not know how to strike, throw, takedown, grapple, submit etc. (MMA by todays standards.)

  • shotokan doestn have anything practical sorry.nobody will attack you with oi tsuki

  • This is a fallacious statement.

I've used Oi Tsuki on others all the time, and it is the first throw I teach beginners. It is a very effective throw. It is the most basic throw someone can learn. Why wouldn't you use it? I don't understand what you are saying. The basic structure of Oi Tsuki is brilliant human anatomical mechanics. Pull, and Push with a rotation. Very useful. Perhaps you could be more clear.

  • maybe against old men or 5 year old kids shotokan can be effective.but against someone that knows the basics of boxing or grappling shotokan doesnt have a change.KO or tap in few seconds

  • look all the bunkai in youtube.defenses against oi-tsuki yeah right..what a waste of time shotokan is

  • Yea sure, and you think that everything on youtube is all there is?

in that case your beloved Muay Thai/BJJ is probably the weakest fighting art ever

you show withyour posts that you probably don't know anything on fighting, that you have no experience in fighting other than watching tele and youtube.

have fun with your ignorance, I hope you'll never come into a fight against a decend karate-ka. since you'll be grounded within seconds.

  • oh yes the hide the secret deadly moves in the Dojo and they show in Dan gradings and on youtube all the crap that dont work in real life..yeah right

  • For the most part, the majority of Shotokan Karate schools practice mainly sport Karate. This does not mean that Shotokan is useless, it simply means that Shotokan has become a good sect of Karate to join for sport.

Shotokan, despite it's popularity as a sport, can be practiced as a Jutsu. There is one person who comes to mind when I say Jutsu and that would be Patrick McCarthy. Do some research on him and you'll find a different side of Karate.

  • I could name a few more,

Tetsuhiko Asai (R.I.P. not to long ago)

    Jan Knobbel

    Kawasoe

and there are probably loads more,

the JKA is also tensing up atm to bring the hard traditional training back.

acer: you're either just stupid, or choose to be blind, there is loads of VERY effective stuff on karate on youtube.

99% of what we learn in the dojo is pure effective self-defense.

if you choose blind/ignorant, your choise, not worth the time to discuss over the internets.

  • Congratulations, You are probably the dumbest joker and waste of energy on whole of the internet.

  • and you want see the truth and your waste years

  • Eterud, those are two very good examples of great Shotokan masters who are preserving the Samurai spirit of Karate. There is many others as well. And this acerwk is a miserable weakling, a perpetual wannabe, going around youtube and trying to boost his own image criticizing Shotokan masters, because he's not able to earn some respect on tatami, in fight. Don't even pay attention to loosers like this. A person who has no respect for great masters can never be a good fighter.

  • Gwiss, you're right for most part, but there is also a significant number of old school Shotokan masters who are preserving the warriors spirit of traditional Karate. Yahara Sensei, for example, and the recent offspring of Shotokan, called Fudokan. I still regard it as Shotokan. There is other examples as well. Norihiko Iida Sensei, Kanazawa Sensei, to mention just a few. And yes, the jutsu form of Shotokan is very effective FIGHTING system. Best example: Lyoto Mashida in MMA.

  • Great answer! he doesn't know what he say!

  • Just to clarify Mr. Acerwk. It's very easy and safe to critizice any style or martial arts using the youtube comment posting but I bet it's very difficult for you Mr. Acerwk to go to a Shotokan school and tell that to the practicioners in there. Want to try it. Come to Master Saito school here in Miami in Coral Way and 72nd Ave, but let me know to be there with my camera and my karategi to show you what Shotokan is all about: A single hit and you are out.

  • oh no he will attack me with the deadly oi-tsuki hahaha.,.he will be KO in a sec..shotokan what a shit

  • Ohs to all the Karate practicioners in the site. The Heian Katas come from the Pinan Katas. They are actually the same but Master Funakoshi inverted the Pinan Nidan and placed it first in the Shotokan system for the simplicity of it. He called the Pinan (which is the Okinawan name) Heian, which means Pacific Mind.

  • shotokan,what a shit...sucks

  • acerwk got beat up by a low grade shotokan karate student, the gayboy has been crying like a bitch ever since, he hates shotokan NO WONDER IT GOT HIM A BLOOD NOSE AHAH !!

  • what do you know?

  • thanks heian shodan

  • My ears hear Mikami Sensei in the background. correct or not?

  • i think the second kata on 1:40 is pinan shodan

  • No, it's not Pinan Shodan, it's Heian Nidan

  • Although Pinan Shodan and Heian Nidan are almost exactly identical.

  • Just discovered this. Have trained for 25 years. The key instructor isYoshiharu Osaka who was the model for Sensei Nakayama's best karate series by Kodansha. No matter how you have been told to to Shotokan THIS is the most essential way of the style to build advanced training onie real fighting

  • Help!!! lol

  • heian shodan

  • thanks

  • I have to learn the first kata, I need some help, can anyone tell me the name of the first shotokan karate kata and if it is on this video. Ive been in only 5 practices, but the sensei teaches me personally so I have learned a lot about movements and how to perform them in the correct way.

  • The first shotokan kata is called Heian Shodan. It is demonstrated in this clip. There also is a training kata, but for the 7th kuy you'll have to do the heian shodan. succes

  • thanks

  • FredGuitar89, as you start practicing they usually first teach you Taikyoku Shodan (sometimes called a pre-kata), which teaches you the basic principles of kata. Then you move up to Heian Shodan (shown here), which is your exam kata for yellow belt. For orange, belt you practice Heian Nidan & Heian Sandan, then for green belt Heian Yondan & Heian Godan plus Tekki Shodan ( not shown here), then you learn Bassai Dai, Jion and so on.

  • nice katas, a joy to watch.

  • wow their good :) im only a yellow belt lol :D cant wait to learn all the katas!!

  • this video is summary, its wonderful i remember some katas

  • great job guys.I am s happy to see you guys.very helpfull.I see the strengh.rithsim and movemnets how realy they are

  • I study from the book karate-do kyohan.I would like to over your dojo and test me.

  • the first one was heian nidan. i love karate i have brown belt

  • Does anyone know what series this is from?

  • They are all members from the old JKA kenshusei instructor group. Sadly they split up in many organizations!

  • Issho Benkyo, yo're right. It's very sad that they split, but at least it's a good thing that they all still call teir Karate Shotokan Karate, and they're all great masters and great instuctors. I still respect everyone of them and wherever I travel, I always go to nearest Shotokan Dojo (regardless of association) for a few training sessions. I've always been accepted and respected, and they're always eager to welcome a Shotokan friend to their Dojos.

  • this is by far the most helpful video ive seen so far. im trying to learn heian yondan and this one is slow enough that i can see what theyre doing but smooth enough to look quick.

  • My son just began learning kata. This will be an enormous help to him. Thank you.

  • Thanks; excellent video, if there is another please share it on the net.

  • 14 years ago i KNEW these kata and used to teach novices. Then I discovered Girls, Cars and Booze.

    Shame on me.

    R

  • 30 years ago, I spent a lot of time in the dojo "learning" these kata. I felt compelled to comment. Holy, SHIT!

  • Thanks for the video. It's really cool to see some of the kata being performed by people who are really have a lot of experience doing it and to see the difference between knowing the kata (ie, being able to perform it in sequence and in a technically correct manner) and REALLY knowing it.

  • wonderful

  • WHAT A MOTIVATIONAL VIDEO

  • I have been lucky enough to be taugtht by sinsae mikami.

  • Thanks for this video. Brought back a lot of old memories. Off to practice my Kata's again.

  • grande jka (semilla de skif), fuerza, fluides y foco...

  • thank you for putting this up i'm always forgetting my katas

  • I used to practise these kata some years ago... this brought me nice memories... thanks to who posted it

  • Good video kata.

  • End power = by focus and tensing of the appropriate muscles on contact and locking of appropriate joints to form skeletal locking and vibration along with the use of the breath.

  • amazing power and fluidity of technique every technique 100% long live the JKA

  • kime is power through total mind and body harmony. at the moment of impact focus all your mind, all your muscles, and spirit for a killing blow. Then immediately return to relaxed and calm.

  • Thanks so much for putting this up. Master Osaka's technique is flawless. Best I've seen. Does anyone know where he is teaching or did teach? Thanks again.

  • Really nice snap but what happened to looking where you're about to turn to? Is this a modern addition because that's how I'm being taught?

  • kime = resolve

  • does anyone know if that is master Ochi counting in the backround? because it really sounds like him

  • It's the voice of Masatoshi Nakayama.

  • is the bold movement accompanied with force and clear technique

  • Thanks! Helps me a lot to catch up. =)

  • Those were very well performed, I think the best I've seen on you tube.

  • I forget all my kata's..thanks for bring me back to my memories

  • Neat!

  • Sensei's kime is absolutely fantastic. This is kata the way it is meant to be performed, although I notice some subtle differnces to the way I was first taught. I guess you call it progress. I would love to see some bunkai performed by these guys

  • great work, thanks again

  • Fantastic !

Kata - The way it is supposed to be performed.

  • Awesome, thanks!

  • VERY NICE !! BRINGS MEMORIES BACK..
