The most obvious one is the story behind limousine... Also the line in the movie from Home Alone is an illusion to another movie that I cannot quite remember the title at this time.
AHHHHH I found the interview. It was in Mississippi, my bad. But a man named Mylon Lefevre was a christian metal artist in the 80's and one time they were setting up a stage during an odd summer job they had together and it was for christian artists that nobody ever watched and John recognized Mylon (who was now doing contemporary music) and he stood up and screamed PLAY CRACK THE SKY, which apparently broke Mylon's spirits haha.
You should add the story about the title of "Play Crack The Sky" Jesse talks about it during a concert in Louisiana with Kevin Devine and one other (female) artist. I've only heard it once but its a really funny story about when he and John Nolan were young.
i think you got the lyrics to you wont know a little mixed up. maybe the part about kay is right but i know for sure that in the other part he doesnt say burning bush he says i am fine to put your gun to my life, and though im scared it wont fire up right
@nickfromdtown1992 and i might be mistaken by the way but im also pretty sure that the boy who blocked his own shot was when jessey and his dad were playing basket ball and jessey blocked his own shot some how and he used it as a song title. but everything ive said could be wrong. thats why brand new rapes. you can interpret it differently
@Snack314 yeah, he was choked to death, then thrown into the sea. The meaning is sitll the same, I just fudged the details. My bad. I'll add that to my list of amendments to make for the next video. Thanks!
Great video. The only thing I'd say that was missing is that while guernica was a painting, and a city, the word itself means cancer, which I believe is what the song is about.
I would say that most of these allusions were intentional, and you found them spot on. I would bet there are probably more than we know... And I'm sure Daisy contains some too. Even though the songs were not written by Jesse... I feel like all these allusions make Brand New songs more meaningful. Love it :)
I didn't find most of these, but thanks. Already, some neat things have been found when it comes to Daisy.
One of these days, I'll put together another video. I had made one involving the B-sides and some corrections to this video, but the night I finished it, we had a tornado and my computer shorted, frying the hard drive. But hopefully, I'll get back to it, and include some things on Daisy, too.
Hmmmm Jesse sure knows a lot about the bible for somebody who is publicly skeptical about the truth in religion. Nice video though, some were obvious but as an atheist it was nice that somebody else pointed out the ones that are substantially less obvious.
I'm not sure I'd say Jesse is "publicly skeptical." I took a Bible class one time though, and it was cool to see the roots of a lot of their lyrics. I actually didn't know most of them myself (never gone to church) but a lot of them were pointed out by others across the internet.
There are some intelligent passages in The Bible. But as far as what religion--notably the Christian faith in particular-- stands for, the belief that one entity who no one has seen is somehow "spiritually" watching over them is absurd. I think the best way to understand a religion is to separate the truth from fiction. If it can be applied to your life in an enriching way then it is true. If it is pure speculation then it won't be of use to anyone--at least in the sense of enrichment.
@later66 Well I'd hope that ANYONE who is skeptical of religion, espeically Christianity, would be at least familiar with, if not scholared in, the religious text they seek to debunk.
arter you are correct about the golden chariot being from the bible it is where elijah goes into heaven on the chariot of fire or golden chariot depending on the translation
If you're going to make statements like that, please back them up with a source of some kind. As far as I'm aware, it's areference to that Bible passage, but if I'm verifiably incorrect, that's fine, too.
sooo half of these things he just copied from other songs. Taking a line or a beat or a riff directly from another song is not an allusion, it's plagiarism
This encompasses maybe 2% of their music. That's not plagiarism. If you're going to make that claim, be prepared for the repercussions. This is like me saying that if you've ever said "That's what she said" or some other famous quote, you're plagiarizing, too.
plagiarism is not based on percentages, if you are suggesting that they took a line from a smiths song like you did in the video, then it is plagiarism. The reason its plagiarism is because it is copyrighted, and since no one has the rights to "thats what she said" then no everytime i say it i am not plagiarizing. I love brand new but im letting you know that taking parts of other songs and saying they are your own is in fact plagiarism.
The reason I brought up percentages is that you claimed that "half of these things" they took from other songs. I was defending that they didn't. This video is under ten minutes long. If you gather up everything brand new has done, it's several hours. Not even close to half, especially since that section isn't even half of this video. Second, in most of these cases, it isn't taken word for word, but altered a bit to allude to it without ripping it off. A lot of artists do this.
Second, "that's what she said" originated with "The Office." See, you've been doing it and weren't even aware of it. And that's just one example.
Third, brand new has NEVER claimed that these were their own. When Jesse Lacey gets up on stage and says "I wrote this line myself" about one of these songs, then maybe you have a case.
Look up Allusion in the dictiojnary. It has its own word because it isn't plagiarism, it's clearly different.
no i dont listen to rap because sampling is a legal form plagiarism. I like actual music, not people taking old songs and ruining them with their crappy lyrics. and they do claim those lines are their own since they put those songs out under their own name and look at the back of the cd case, it would say all songs writtne by jesse lacey
The only line they lifted directly was "I never thought this day would end, I never thought tonight could ever be this close to me." It's a Cure reference, and pretty much every brand new fan is well aware of that. But until Robert Smith sues the band for it, it's not a problem. Bands cover songs live all the time, but that isn't considered plagiarism. I imagine you've never seen Dashboard Confessional live, or you'd be shitting bricks over how many allusions Chris Carabba makes. Happens a lot.
...uhh... taking a line from a song is not a copyright violation. Copyrights are made to protect an artists work, and when it becomes blatantly obvious that someone else is trying to rip off, and steal profit from that artist, with a similar, or exact replication, then it's considered a copyright violation. You know, stealing melodies and chord structures, more or less.
Anyways, I'm pretty sure The Office is a copyrighted show. So if taking a line from a song is a violation then so is a show.
...uhhh... its not at all apples to oranges... they are both forms of copyrighted media. It's the same idea. You know that the RIAA cracks down on both movies and music right? Why would that be?
ok the uhhh at the beginning of every post is unnecessary. just because they are forms of copyrighted media does not mean anything. the riaa cracks down on movies and music because there is music in movies and the office is not a movie, yet.
I'm pretty sure the RIAA has nothing to do with movies...
Look, the only difference between a band alluding to another song on a record, and a band covering a song live, is they get PAID when they do it LIVE, and most likely not on the record. But nobody considers a cover plagiarism. Know why?
Because it's a fucking TRIBUTE. A lot of artists feel HONORED by it. Otherwise, they'd be suing over it.
Besides, in our time, pretty much anything you can think of has been done by someone, somewhere.
I don't understand why everyone has to tear apart this video. It was put together nicely. Regardless if some of the references are obvious or far stretched, either way they are allusions. So stop your whining and appreciate it for what it is. Jesse Lacey is a legit genius...end of story.
If you are going to use mixed tape. I am not sure if it is a reference to the book, The Perks Of Being a Wallflower" But, in the book the main character is given a mixed tap and it has a song by the smiths. Its a great book, and it fits pretty well.
That's not even close to "everything." And it doesn't make the video "terrible."
If you've ever read the Bible, the 40 days/nights thing is used a LOT, especially in the first five books.
The tongue/rutter thing is also from the Bible. I don't know why you think it's so far-fetched, since Jesse is well known for Bible quotes.
The Donnie Darko one seems a bit of a stretch, to me. But they love movie quotes, too. The Dogma quote is all but definite, it's maybe three words different.
I know this is 5 months old, but I will say I highly doubt that the tongue is a rudder quote is a coincidence. It's very similar to the verses in James
And if it's cliche where did the cliche come from? Its a cliche started with the Bible, and thus the cliche itself is an allusion to James.
meanwhile the whole lyric is "We prey as wolves among the sheep and slit the necks of soldiers while they sleep." im 100% sure its just a common phrase and not a reference to trojan horse
same thing for the dogma and donnie darko "quotes" they are very cliche comments and it could be just a coincdence
And yeah, it could all be from elsewhere. I never said any of this was definite. But even if he got it from somewhere else, things like The Oddyssey and The Bible are the source materials, so wherever Jesse got it from, they got it from those. In the end, that's what this video was aiming to do: point out the source material.
I doubt it, too. I had a talk on AIM with someone one time, and we both agreed that it probably has nothing to do with Secret Window. It seems more like it's just about the content of the song. I had read somewhere about the Secret Window thing, and it made sense because of all the other movie quotes, and I thought it came from an interview. But I don't think I ever found the source for it, so it probably isn't related.
I've always felt fairly certain that Sowing Season is a reference to Luke 8:4-15, the parable of the sower. Also the verse reference is missing from Play Crack the Sky, which is James 3 somethin. I don't remember the exact verse, I just know it's in James 3, as thats one of my favorite books.
u missed one. i will play my game beneath the spin light is a reference to a book i read in elementary school. i cant remember whats its called, but its about a young basketball player, and he always plays. one day he wins a spinning light, and he always believed he would play an important game under it. in the end, he played the game against his friends abusive father at night under the spining light
ALSO,in one of the leaked demos (Untitled 9),the bass line is VERY similar to the bassline in "With Or Without You" by U2. if you havent heard Untitled 9,let me know.
the boy who blocked his own shot is what jesse's dad used to call him when the played basketball. he put his left hand in a way that would push the ball and keep it from going in
The Donnie Darko allusion you found was really interesting, although in my opinion you possibly missed one-jesse says Degausser is about the end of the world, as is that film, and several characters mutter "a storm is coming"
If I'd done the video I'd probably have talked about the painting guernica's content- ie the german condor legioin totally wiping out a town in the spanish civil war
take ships as an example. although they are so large and driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts
How is it completely wrong? I quoted most of it word for word. Of course, it'll depend on the version of the Bible, but most of it is meant to quote it. Religion is a big part of Jesse's life. He went to a religious school, if I recall. He even has pictures of Jesus on his guitars. The stuff about the tongue being a rudder and watching what you say is in the Bible.
but at 6:40, it's not because of the smiths song, it's from when jesse used to play basketball with his dad, and he accidentally blocked his own shot.
this is an almost direct quote from one of the recordings of the boy who blocked his own shot live in vienna- "over in america we have this game called basketball...(something about them getting good and the croatians coming to invade the nba)...my family's a big basketball family, when i was a kid i had this problem like i'd shoot right, but it was supposed to be like your God hand, and instead i would take my hand and put it in front of the ball, and so in effect i would block my own shot"
I had heard about that. I may add it to the next video. Which reminds me... there will be another. There was another, actually, but a tornado hit, and fried my hard drive, and I lost it. I was about to upload it, too x.x So I'm going to redo it.
you know... it is also a reference to the fact that he broke up with a girl for no reason and he wants her back... but hey, basketball is pretty neat.
Nobody said the song was about basketball. The legend goes that the TITLE came from something his dad said, while they were playing basketball. Nice attempt to one-up a total stranger over the internet without first having any idea what you're talking about, though. That's always entertaining.
The most obvious one is the story behind limousine... Also the line in the movie from Home Alone is an illusion to another movie that I cannot quite remember the title at this time.

I fundamentally disagree. However, if you can give some examples, I'd be willing to listen. What here is a far far stretch?
And yeah, some will be obvious. I included them because they exist. the video isn't "hard to find references and allusions," after all.
Arter 3 years ago
IMO far stretches are:
40 days 40 nights
tongue/rutter
supposed donnie darko quote
supposed dogma quote, this ones not even word for word.
supposed odyssey reference
the boy who blocked his own shot smiths likeness
im not saying you cant be right, im saying them seem like far stretches.

and is that last thing a reference to fight club? it might be a stretch, but thats what it reminds me of

Which Play Crack the Sky quote?
And no. The ending thing was a reference to Illusions, by Richard Bach. Emofly17 caught it.

take ships as an example. although they are so large and driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts
thestormlscoming 3 years ago
Your tongue is a rudder
That steers the whole ship
Sends your words past your lips
Or keeps them safe behind your teeth
But the wrong words will strand you
Come off course while you sleep
Sweep your boat out to sea
Or dash it to bits on the reef.
Basically, it's about how you can ruin things so easily by picking the wrong words.
Arter 3 years ago
oh no i get that, but i guess i just thought you were quoting something, but perhaps you were just stating your own thoughts
thestormlscoming 3 years ago
It was a quote from the Bible.

Illusions by Richard Bach?

I actually had to watch this again to figure out why you brought that up, haha. Forgot I put that in the end.
Well, a billion points for you, for having an impeccable taste in literature :D
Arter 3 years ago
I don't know him, so I can't really say.
But I believe you are incorrect. He has a lot of direct quotes. I've never seen someone who isn't religious quote the Bible so well.
That, and brand new usually has Christian bands open for them. And the painting of Jesus on the back of Jesse's guitar might be saying something.
Arter 3 years ago
not to mention Jesse went to a Christian school back in Long Island

Sure, someone this MAY be in the Bible but it seems as if you are kind of forcing it to fit.
The 70x7 one is correct but the one from Play Crack the Sky is completly wrong.
And @ fghtffyrdmns09- It was a reference to the song "A Boy with a Thorn in this Side"
But I didnt know about the whole NMH thing about the -- track. That was cool

"but the one from Play Crack the Sky is completly wrong."
How the hell can you know with any kind of certainty that it's wrong?
Ambelight 3 years ago 4
How is it completely wrong? I quoted most of it word for word. Of course, it'll depend on the version of the Bible, but most of it is meant to quote it. Religion is a big part of Jesse's life. He went to a religious school, if I recall. He even has pictures of Jesus on his guitars. The stuff about the tongue being a rudder and watching what you say is in the Bible.

it's not from the boy with the thorn in his side according to wikipedia
and i proudly trust wikipedia

this seriously gave me the chills.
but at 6:40, it's not because of the smiths song, it's from when jesse used to play basketball with his dad, and he accidentally blocked his own shot.
fghtffyrdmns09 3 years ago
I've heard that one, too. That's why I said it 'may' be a reference, because I couldn't find anything to back up the basketball thing.
Arter 3 years ago
ohh got it.
fghtffyrdmns09 3 years ago
this is an almost direct quote from one of the recordings of the boy who blocked his own shot live in vienna- "over in america we have this game called basketball...(something about them getting good and the croatians coming to invade the nba)...my family's a big basketball family, when i was a kid i had this problem like i'd shoot right, but it was supposed to be like your God hand, and instead i would take my hand and put it in front of the ball, and so in effect i would block my own shot"
thestormlscoming 3 years ago
I had heard about that. I may add it to the next video. Which reminds me... there will be another. There was another, actually, but a tornado hit, and fried my hard drive, and I lost it. I was about to upload it, too x.x So I'm going to redo it.
Arter 3 years ago
you know... it is also a reference to the fact that he broke up with a girl for no reason and he wants her back... but hey, basketball is pretty neat.
jonbucholz 3 years ago
Nobody said the song was about basketball. The legend goes that the TITLE came from something his dad said, while they were playing basketball. Nice attempt to one-up a total stranger over the internet without first having any idea what you're talking about, though. That's always entertaining.
Arter 3 years ago
eh... why get into arguments over the internet? my apologies if i came off seeming malicious, you're right, i'm wrong.
jonbucholz 3 years ago
Hey, I'm sorry. My post was a lot more malicious than yours. And a bit hypocritical, too. I get like that, sometimes, on the internet.
Arter 3 years ago
WTF? Being polite on the internet?
Wow. And he's not even officially President yet. Go Obama!
