This is a great piece. In 05 it was the opener to our field show along with Samuel R Hazo's Ride; talk about a workout. Of course it was arranged slightly different, and our director didn't let us yell slava at the end.lol
Absolutely love the blend of the small woodwind group and the trombones and trumpets are so playful and hilarious.
Great overall, I feel bad for the horn player who totally biffs the high note 2:10 .. tired chops are a killer!
tune that soprano sax for god sakes.could you play any sharper? clean your articulations! slava is a very hard piece to refine and work out the bugs but it really shouldnt be played without a serious regard for rhythmic precision. Notice the distinct difference Bernstein wanted to hear between accents (roof tops) and staccatos. this ensemble shows no audible difference between these articulations. its one thing to play this piece and its another thing to play it right. all over the place!
along with the soprano sax SOLI there is an electric guitar with it soo it was probably the intonation between the two, but i'm sure you probably knew that already
... I wish more people would utilize the other alternatives for the solo in the middle. I mean, as fun and glorious as this piece is, constantly rehearsing the middle section because a Soprano Saxophone is more accessible (and incredibly out of tune) more often hurts the piece then not.
Great job. Thanx for posting. We're playing this in my Wind Ensemble as well. A little more confidence to the horns on those high notes. Challenging piece, but really fun to play.
Pretty decent performance, a little shaky. Actually, the tempo is almost exactly where it needs to be according to the score, maybe two clicks slow. A couple of individual section problems, but the ensemble sound is good. Is this high school or collegiate?
Either way, THANK YOU for posting this. I'm a music major, using this piece for conducting, and this is the only good recording I can find anywhere without paying money (which is in short supply). Thanks so much!
Great song. I imagine this ensemble is very talented (at least able to play this, anyway)... I would expect a little more musicality out of such a group. Definitely the best recording I've found up here, though. Good job.
I love this song! I got to play it as an Honor band member for the Little Rock Wind Symphony! I was 3rd Euphonium! Man this song is so much fun! The 7/8 section sounds cool once you get the tempo.
The tempo was too slow. The ensemble appears to be capable of taking this piece to the next level. Intonation was off, but that happens. This is one of the best recordings though, so thanks for posting....
Yes there is. It is written in the score but whether or not there is one playing here I'm not sure. The guitar is supposed to be the main instrument for the solo in the 7/8 section.
aw they are playing slower after the middle part :(

Don't be such a fucking stuck up band nerd. Christ sake, not every performance is a great reflection of how a band plays.

there IS an electric guitar in this, for the 7/8 section. Really great piece, based on Russia.
