This is a remarkable composition. I had a friend who passed away at the age of 18 due to leukemia. He was a very large part of our band program. My junior year we played this piece in his honor. It is such a moving piece that almost anyone can relate to.
Sorry to be a jerk but he wrote this for his mother, who lost her legs to diabetes. I know my facts are correct, because I heard it directly from him yesterday. His mother hated going out in public because she was ashamed, and didn't want pity thrust upon her. He loved her. His mother loved him so much, Instead of buying his family a washer in the 40s she bought him his instrument. Larry wrote this after his mother died in memory of her. The Wisconsin middle level honor band Played it. I cried.
I'm playing this piece in band right now (freshman year). I am a percussionist and usually slow songs bore me but I really enjoy this piece. It is really powerful and moving and you can feel the sadness. It's truly beautiful.
My concert band at my school played this. WE deticated it to my grandpa because he was such a big influence to alot of the students. We had auditions for the trumpet solo and i got it. After i played the solo, the rest of the song i felt him sitting with me. It was truely an amazing feeling. I love you GRanddaddy. RIP. <3
I actually had a chance to talk to a very close friend of Daehn's and he in fact composed it for his deceased mother who had her legs amputated because of her diabetes. Though I think it's more important that it is a beautiful song, and I do hope I get a change to play another of Daehn's pieces.
It is important to cite correct information - that's why it matters that Daehn wrote this for his deceased mother, rather than his wife. Truth and accuracy are important.
It is important to cite correct information - that's why it matters that Daehn wrote this for his deceased mother, rather than his wife. Truth and accuracy are important.
@trumpetman338 um, im sorry but you have your facts WRONG.... i have met Larry Daehn, and i asked him about this peice and he said he wrote it for his wife who went to all his concerts and traveled the world with hem, but had a long battle wityh cancer, and finally passed away peacefully. he basicly poured his heart out in this piece.
We got this song today in my band class, and the Info sheet that came with the music said it was for his wife. And i'm a 100% positive they wouldn't send schools false information.
First horn part is KILLER! Beautiful, but killer! Only thing I hate about this song is that the alto saxes have them same part as the horns (for most of the song) drives me banana-sandwich... But still, BEAUTIFUL song!!!!! My favorite we're playing for our concert!
I played this my freshman year of high school. While learning this piece, one of our Alto sax's decided to end her life. Before she passed away she told a good friend that she wanted this played at either her wedding or her funeral, whichever came first. When we played this, it was dedicated to her. It is a very moving piece.
he actually composed this for his mother, who had been through so much but still was happy and lead a simple life for her children. beautiful song-my band is playing this now, and i hope we can do it justice
ohhhh myyy goshhhh my schools band played this when i was a freshman..i was on alto sax and this was my favorite song for that year...this brings back sooo many memories
I see all comments about people who have played this piece, but not of a conductor; so ill be the first. Let me start by saying this was in fact composed for his mother who had diabetes, and passed away. He also wrote" As Summer Was Just Begining" for james dean, another beautiful piece. Next, i am most likely conducting this piecce for the upcoming spring concert in 2011, and couls possibly be a festival list. The composition isnt really that hard, but what makes it be a Gr. 4 piece is
This song is indeed one of my favorites! I've always liked sad songs for some reason, they just seem more beautiful in every way, don't get me wrong I love other types of music and songs, but they have a way of entering your soul and deeply touching you, sometimes to the point of crying, in which case this song falls in.
It's weird but I don't feel just sad, but also at ease & relaxed while hearing this song.
We're playing it in the scout band from my area & I just fell in love with it!!!!
I had a chance to talk to Mr. Larry Daehn and talk to him about this piece and he explained the story behind it and why he wrote this for his mother. Any of you that think he wrote it for his wife you are wrong it was written for his mom.
@MrRatguy1 WOW!!!! You had a chance to talk to Larry Daehn in person!?!?! How? Are you relative member or close friend (not meaning to be creepy or to intrude, just plain curious, that's all!)
I really enjoied playing this for my band concert my sophmore year. it's not only for his wife, but for everyone who has lost someone they love. It's a way to remember thouse who we have had depart from us.
@seyram1993 It was for his mother. In the performance notes of the song, everything is explained, not to mention that at the top of the piece it talks about being dedicated to Lois Daehn, that's his mother's name. Part of the reason we played the song in high school was because my band director's mom died in much the same way, so he used the song as a tribute to that and told us the actual story of the song when explaining why he chose it.
