I saw this show in Chicago ten years ago. It was so beautiful I shed a tear. One of my favorite concerts of all time. I still have the t-shirt I bought there.
Why the hell have the Residents NOT had a Grammy? Perhaps they are too unorthodox and have never pandered to record company back-slapping and payola I suspect.
@MrMonsterstiffy Oh my God, I've been taken in by some mysterious cult then! Still....the music is brilliant even if they don't actually exist..........or maybe they do..........who knows?
@zombieman62 - Well, they've been around since the 70's, so they're bound to have a lot of older fans just like other bands that have been around as long.
The one minute videos are mostly from the Residents' Commercial DVD, the decades later followup to the Residents' Commercial Album: 40 songs of exactly (or close to) one minute each, which is all the time it takes to present some melodies/ideas. It's a brilliant concept, an observation on commercialism as well as some pretty interesting music (and now, images). I bought the album when it first came out, and now have the DVD which I strongly recommend to anyone who likes the Residents.
This song is really beautifull, the story about the godfather is incredible !!! i wish i was in that truck, taking a pic !! Can ya simply IMAGINE that ? James AND the residents !!! i can tell you i wouln't have showing it to ANYBODY !!!
Hey, im not new to the residents, but i just dont know alot about themm. Does anyone wanna give me a brief simple history lesson? haha like who is in the band if you even know, some interesting facts, where they are now, what they are doing now? Like he said Snakefinger had a heart attack, so does that mean they are like done as a band or something?? justt give me all youu know, i want to be enlightened. =p thankk you
@MrJacobFennell to answer a couple of your questions - Snakefinger contributed to Residents albums pretty often, but wasn't considered a real member. He died in 1987 and the band continued well after that. Their last real album was in 2008 I think, but they're still working on more music. Oh, and no one really knows who they are, but many think the management team that does interviews in their place are actually The Residents themselves.
Only RACIST black people would find that racist, because they are dumb ignorant people who like to play the race card every 3 seconds, and assume everyone is looking at them thinking "look at that dumb nigger". When in reality we only think "look at that dumbass who doesn't realize he's the most racist one here." Some say anything they want but expect non black people to watch carefully what they say OR ELSE. YOU AREN'T BLACK, YOU'RE HUMAN! SHUT UP AND MAKE SOME NON-BLACK FRIENDS, OBAMA SUCKS.
@adamtheskunk Obama sucks? Is that why on the national presidential poll he ranked as the fifteenth president of all time. You're just ignorant. Why don't you make some non white friends. Because I don't you have any.
@brandito27 You are ignorant because you're saying my OPINION is wrong. Also instead of assuming I'm white take time to realize im hispanic with friends of all races. I got black, white, indian, ect friends. I need not some kid who thinks he's smarter than me by throwing out statistics to say what i personally think is wrong. Get the fuck out of america if you are going to say my SPEECH is wrong.
@adamtheskunk i like everything you said except the part when you said obama sucks. you can't even know that yet! people like you and some others (glenn beck, fellow neo-nazis)keep holding him back, letting off the appearance that he isn't holding true on his promises. so, if you think he sucks, blame yourself (i didn't call YOU a neo-nazi, just g.b and his hate-pals).
The use of the word "negro" isn't racist, but out of date. That was the accepted term back in the 60s. Maybe this points to their being Southerners who were hippies in the 60s. Or maybe they it's a sardonic reference to how the music industry minstrelizes African-American performers, forcing them to fit into racist stereotypes if they are to be accepted by mainstream white audiences. Either way, I don't think they're that dense. LIsten to what they say about James Brown and Oprah.
I felt strange when he used the word "negro" too, but the Residents have been creating music, images, sounds... and lyrics that pique the uncomfortableness in all of us for the last 40+ years. If folks think this one instance of the word "negro" is racist, then you have not been listen to The Residents, or music in general, for the last 40+ years.
this is song is wonderful and whoever is complaining about racism when saying the word negro, well how do you know that any of the residents are white?!?! people are people, get over it and stop judging!!!!!
wow i have not listened to the residents in 20 years.glad they gave snakefinger a shout out!!!!saw him at the 9:30 club in D.C. months later he died........
@jimsurf1 At least half of my fondest musical memories were born at the old 9.30 club in DC on V. And the other half were born at the Bayou in GT :-) DC rocked in the 80s, my old stomping grounds. Cheers for reminding me mate!
I haven't heard nearly enough of the Residents, as I just discovered them. I found this and fell even more in love with them. I was smiling the whole time, like the people in the audience. It's just a magic that only a handful of artists can create, but none do it quite like the Residents. I wish I could have been there.
I'm aware of that. The comment on Swedish dirt was a response to ZLUGGO, who said "I'm Swedish by the way". I was responding to him, it had nothing to do with the video, unfortunately.
Simply mentioning the word negro is not a racist thing. And the music industry is full of negro singers doing some mellow and some not so mellow rap. Please explain why you find that statement so incredibly racist? Especially in the light of the James Brown monologue.
It seems to me that overly sensitive political correctness often damages the targets it wishes to defend as it assumes that they are defenceless in their own right.
@MustachioEdd Yup. (In the USA) A lot of black guys rap and a lot of white guys don't rap. These are statements of equal thruth but nobody would think that you are racist if you say the second one. And that's more racist than either of the statements.
I know what you mean sir. But the fact is that my comment, wasn't my comment as I said before. I decided to keep the post though, because "negro singer" just seems to throw the message of the song off a little bit, I think he could've used a different line there, that's all. My neighbor was blatant about the situation however (and posted without my permission), and I am fairly distrustful of him after that.
Get hold of Commercial Album by these guys - amazing! 40 1 minute tracks!
Strange melody and great reflective lyrics. None of it can possibly make sense because the band are totally into concept over logic or at least they are an art group who despises mainstream commercialism. They are more diverse than any bands as each album is totally different...
and to think!!...i first found out about the residents when i stubbled upon some website that had the top 20 musical groups with masks!!! their music and stage antics and everything is the most original thing done to music in the past 40 years and i can't believe not a lot of people know about these guys!!! long live the residents!!!!!
