This is an interesting approach to viewing the Palestinian-Israeli dynamic. Socialization occurs in all countries, but Peled-Elhanan's study highlights the importance of textbooks shown to children at early ages. Ironic that Palestinians are always mentioned as a "problem" or "threat" basically as a collective and not as people. A textbook should not read as a military manifest, promoting verbal and visual racist discourse.

I really liked this video because it presents an alternate view of the Palestinian/Israel conflict. It shows that information in textbooks is biased and not factual. Education is really key to maintenance or challenging existing narratives and like Nurit Peled-Elhanan states in the video it is easier to maintain narratives, than to challenge them. Justification of killing Palestinians and taking their land for the greater state of Israel via textbooks is a real tragedy.

Why is Israel criticized for identifying and consolidating its national identity, exactly as other countries do without apology? Doesn't every single European ... and every Arab/Muslim country, for that matter, give prominence to its citizens, legitimize its military actions and reinforce their citizens identities? I have written about some of the issues she raises, but I examine depictions of Israel in maps, specifically the maps in tourist-oriented books and souvenirs on sale in Israel (search for 'The Map of Israel is Complicated – Or is it?')

Also troubling are the ad hominem comments posted here. Argue against the case the author presents. To say that she is mentally ill is to take a cheap and very low road.

Just like the media creates an incorrect image for the Middle East so does Israel create a wrong image for the Palestinians. This wrong image isn’t only seen through books but also through religious practices, conflicts, and word of mouth. Israel’s educational system are blinding their population from the whole truth. As you speak to more and more Israeli Jewish people, you get the sense that a large portion have been brainwashed by the system in Israel. This is incredibly sad considering their own past experiences of persecution as a peoples. I take great solace in knowing that we still have a large progressive Jewish population outside of Israel who still speak the truth and fight for human rights.

Let's not forget the progressive Jewish population inside Israel, many of whom do sterling work (individually and as part of NGOs) to advance human rights and social justice in their own country and in the Occupied Territories. Some also conduct very good and important research (e.g. the work done by B'Tselem and Ir Amim.)
