Oh.. The problem is not the textbooks. They try to convey all sides of the problem, also the side that Nurit doesn't like. E.G most Israeli Arabs really don't live in high buildings. Its a fact: go to Umm al Fahm to see how they build. Like wise, Arafat nickname was "Abu Amar". Now why is that? Did he have a son called "Amar"? Well, ask just about every Arab in Israel WHO WAS THE ORIGINAL PERSON WHO WAS NICKNAMED "ABU AMAR". Nurit, you're in for a surprise. DO IT.
This is an interesting approach to viewing the Palestinian-Israeli dynamic. Socialization occurs in all countries, but Peled-Elhanan's study highlights the importance of textbooks shown to children at early ages. Ironic that Palestinians are always mentioned as a "problem" or "threat" basically as a collective and not as people. A textbook should not read as a military manifest, promoting verbal and visual racist discourse.
I really liked this video because it presents an alternate view of the Palestinian/Israel conflict. It shows that information in textbooks is biased and not factual. Education is really key to maintenance or challenging existing narratives and like Nurit Peled-Elhanan states in the video it is easier to maintain narratives, than to challenge them. Justification of killing Palestinians and taking their land for the greater state of Israel via textbooks is a real tragedy.
Why is Israel criticized for identifying and consolidating its national identity, exactly as other countries do without apology? Doesn't every single European ... and every Arab/Muslim country, for that matter, give prominence to its citizens, legitimize its military actions and reinforce their citizens identities? When Israel acts like other countries do, it is attacked as racist. This is absurd and proof only of the racism of those who criticize Israel. Her views are taken out of context.
@rickfdez You are absurd and out of context. The racism in this country is thick in the air. Denying the pluralism that exists all around you is the core of racism. This bullshit zionist narrative of a "demographic" threat is the very definition of racism. Go ahead and compare Israel to other racist nations. It won't change the fact that it's wrong.
If IL is such rogue and raciest country as this woman says, then how come she still lives in IL, I'm sure she has plenty of options like for start; move to the democratic Gaza strip, or maybe to the democracy of Syria or Libya. She can also take lesser options like Britain, the US or any Scandinavian country.

Western factories in China employ Chinese. Western enterprises in Africa employ Africans. And of course Israeli factories in Judea and Samaria employ Palestinians. Number of Palestinians employees were angered by their government's decision to boycott Israeli goods produced in the West Bank ... This is a stupid decision of Palestinians government and demolition of another bridge to peace ...
One more thing:.. I don't understand how a culture that was almost wiped out during WW2 can treat another culture this way. It is WRONG! IT IS ISRAELI APARTHEID.
ISRAEL HAS: - An Arab Supreme Court judge - Countless Arab judges in the judicial system - Arab local police chiefs - Freely elected Arab members to Israeli parliament (vilify her daily) - Arab professors & students - Arab doctors in Israeli hospitals - Freedom of speech & demonstration - An Arab deputy Foreign minister - Apartheid? - Really?...

18:41 OH MY GOD they ACTUALLY bring people to speak with them to guide their decision in the military for the following years of their lives! How despicable...lest they make an informed decision; lest they respect those who have fallen for their country.
I feel sorry for this woman, who is the definition of someone with stockholm syndrome. She clearly has a vitriolic hate of israel and zionism. Hence her disgust with the zionist narrative.
The problem with this report is that it presents these things in an absolutist perspective. As we know, humans are deeply flawed. How do these textbooks fare compared to Palestinian textbooks? To arab textbooks? To american textbooks? European textbooks? No context is an invitation for spurious conclusions.
@rstysmms - Thank you my friend for telling the truth here! One of the few people to take a serious stab at researching of Stockholm Syndrome among Jews is Kenneth Levin, a psychiatrist at Harvard.
Dr’ Levin understands it as an infantile attempt to rectify a menacing situation by self-blame. And he also considers it a kissing cousin to the notorious “Stockholm Syndrome,” whereby victims adopt the outlook and agenda of their victimizers.
Nurit Peled-Elhanan gives a fascinating & deeply troubling analysis of Israeli school texts. I have written about some of the issues she raises, but I examine depictions of Israel in maps, specifically the maps in tourist-oriented books and souvenirs on sale in Israel (search for 'The Map of Israel is Complicated – Or is it?')
Also troubling are the ad hominem comments posted here. Argue against the case the author presents. To say that she is mentally ill is to take a cheap and very low road.
@donaldnr say; I examine depictions of Israel in maps"
-
I just wonder how far can you go with your hypocrisy? Being an American citizen you must be fully aware to the atrocities made by your veracious governments for decades already. Consider the fact that you enslaved and segregated Africans, killed, raped and ethnically cleansed the indigenous Indian population and you have Guantanamo prison. you are not in a position to lecture about morality here, sir!
@akai1221 I agree entirely with your critique of American actions, past and present. I am as critical of them as I am of injustices and the abuse of human rights in Israel and the Occupied Territories. But the fact that injustices happen in my country does not mean that I cannot criticize them when they happen elsewhere.
@donaldnr say; I agree entirely with your critique of American actions"
-
so on this same logic, would have had an African American kill one of your family members/close friend, as a revenge to the atrocities made by your people to his ancestors, would you accept the crime and even justify and identify with him? I doubted it...
What do you know on this subject? Have you checked Arab school books to see how Jews and Israel are depicted, or are you simply repeating Israeli propaganda?
In psychology Stockholm Syndrome is a metaphoric idea to any victim who is adopting his victimizer's narrative. consider the fact that this woman's daughter had been killed at age of 13, by a ruthless palestinian suicide bomber in September 97 in Jerusalem along with 4 other innocent people, and her total identification with the palestinian narrative and resistance...
That's makes her the perfect example of this mental Syndrome.
@TheChutzpahGirl - Peled -Elhanan relies on out of date books which do not represent Israeli schools core study book. She seems keen to liable Israel as a raciest country when in fact it's the opposite situation.
Peled Elhanan is definitely psychologically unstable-all you have to do is read her body language namely; the ticks in her eyes and the timing of her nose scratch.
@akai1221 You might as well measure the circumference of her head and the length of her nose. You are the racist. I don't think she "wants" to libel Israel: Israel has made such exposure unavoidable.Israel is a racist state and you, also, are a product of that system. And a good student at that!

Peled-Elhanan is a self hater and clearly suffers from Stockholm Syndrome.
Just like the media creates an incorrect image for the Middle East so does Israel create a wrong image for the Palestinians. This wrong image isn’t only seen through books but also through religious practices, conflicts, and word of mouth. Israel’s educational system are blinding their population from the whole truth. They are one sided and are not open minded like exhibited in the maps. They aren’t giving their people a chance to compose their own frame of their people and another.
This was very well articulated by this lovely lady. However, I am not surprised to hear this. As you speak to more and more Israeli Jewish people, you get the sense that a large portion have been brainwashed by the system in Israel. This is incredibly sad considering their own past experiences of persecution as a peoples. I take great solace in knowing that we still have a large progressive Jewish population outside of Israel who still speak the truth and fight for human rights.
@steute2011 You refer in your post to "a large progressive Jewish population outside of Israel who still speak the truth and fight for human rights."
Let's not forget the progressive Jewish population inside Israel, many of whom do sterling work (individually and as part of NGOs) to advance human rights and social justice in their own country and in the Occupied Territories. Some also conduct very good and important research (e.g. the work done by B'Tselem and Ir Amim.)
@donaldnr You are absolutely correct and I sincerely apologize for that oversight. Unquestionably their work is of critical importance, more so than any other. What is troubling is the recent efforts by the right wing government to limit, tax or both foreign donations to NGO's in Israel.
Thanks for this important posting. I can tell you as an American historian that these racist patterns are exactly parallel to old American textbooks and their images of Native Americans and every other "minority." The Bible's racist fantasies are at the root of them all.
people don't realize that they live in a racist discourse. the people who were gassed for being subhuman by the most sophisticated nation of book burners are now burning books and dehumanizing their captives. what a wonderful lesson in history.
