I'm real sorry, but how does a mediocre song like "We Suck young blood"--possibly my least favorite Radiohead tune (and I know them all) make a spot on the album leaving this masterpiece on a EP. Never understood them for this. Maybe it didn't "fit" the album, dont see it. fucking brilliant tune.
@glennc100 Great question. Take about 4 songs off Hail to the Thief (We Suck Young Blood being one of them) and add this one and you've got an album as good as any they've ever made. Pretty sure Thom would agree with me on this.
@glennc100 I fell you man, people say Hail to the Thief is no good, too long... HTTT It's one of my favorites, actually, my only problem with it is We Suck Young Blood. If this or I Am Citizen Insane replaced that horrible song...
@diversaoemdobro That song is pure genius. The claps, and the guitar make this song really. One of their best in that category. Too bad they can't play it live because the audience is always retarted and claps too soon.
@jrb11191 it was probably just "vagabond" by wolfmother. the riffs are very similar. but then again, riffs like these are very common on t.v shows and movies.
@PouringDownAStream well most of the bands put on b-sides song that aren't that good or wouldn't make much money. Radioheads puts on b-sides songs that wouldn't fit in the album's musical or philosophycal context
PS prudent is, to mention that Radiohead don't compose bad songs, and no, I'm not fanboying, Thom's perfectionist way to compose is the reason why
this song always reminds me of the news coverage of Hurricane Katrina...i watched daily, and for two, maybe three days, broadcasting from the same place, there was a dead black man, behind the newscaster...i always think of this poor soul when listening to this song.....
this song has to be about painkillers, or a drug of some sort. "a couple more for breakfast, a little more for tea, just to take the edge off." I don't really know though. But as a songwriter, that's what it sounds like.
@knudson18 Yup, you got it. The song's about an overdose on pain killers. "Move along, there's nothing left to see, just a body, pouring down the street."
I was listening to Nick Drake's song Parasite on "Pink Moon" and his guitar style and voice made me think of this song. I wonder if Thom Yorke was influenced by Nick Drake?
Musically and lyrically, Thom Yorke's pretty much all you can ask for (aside from Damon Albarn and maybe Britt Daniels). I try to create similar sounds with the music I make.
If any of you have a moment, I'd love to hear what you think of my music. I have a new video up on my channel. Thanks!
I'm just convinced that when I die, It will probably be by my own hand - because of love, and not to a woman (but who knows), but something a little more concerning the whole humanity, and me loosing belief in people, that they can love each other, and be good to each other without any reasons. You know, like the end of christian (not catholic) ideas, just pure hypocrisy, cynicism and other disgusting things like that...
all these people talking about the homeless are devaluing this song for me. sorry, but it's more than that. there's the implication of a relationship, of an interpersonal tension, of years of built-up problems coming to a head, of perhaps a woman coming downstairs to find a man slumped over the kitchen table at 9 in the morning with a half-bottle of cheap vodka clutched in his hand - it's... it's more than your juvenile, superficial "oo it's a song about a tramp" shit.
@theHedonist86 believe it or not, tramps had family and lives before. its not like they dont feel human emotions. while your interpretation is true, it can be either. It is about homeless person, doesn't mean it cant have other meanings tho.
It's been speculated (as already said) that this was written about a homeless man dying on the street as people walked by him. It's possible, but I don't know for sure.
My real point, however, is that Thom wrote this. Consequently, the origin of the song's meaning is derived from his mind. This doesn't mean it can't mean something different to you. Perceive, enjoy, and give unique meaning to art as you experience it. If Miley Cyrus can make you feel something, feel it. The same applies to RH.
For all you guys, i'm going to try and find the source. I'm having trouble finding it atm because I looked into the song a while back. But will post it if I find it :)
hmm i kinda got the sense of thom talking about alchol in this song...a couple morefor breakfast a lil more for tea, maybe just my interpretation. lovely song. true genius.
To be honest, while I love all the music they make, I've read some of Radiohead's blog posts and they seem like they'd be a bit obnoxious in person. Yeah yeah, I'm an American fucktard who doesn't know shit from salad but all I'm saying is that, at least Thom Yorke, would be a bit insufferable to talk to at a party. And so let storm of Anti-American bullshit rain down, rain down on me. From a great height. ; )
@Spideycow25 Radiohead have shown an incredibly laid back and fun side in a lot of interviews/appearances. I'm not saying you're wrong and I'm not mad at you for making that statement, though. I doubt Steven Hawking is all that much fun to hang around, but he's a smart guy none-the-less.
@Spideycow25 Only Thom, the rest seem really nice. And it depends on Thom's mood I guess. I went through this phase about a year or so ago where I absolutely hated Thom. I thought he was the most arrogant and pretentious man I'd ever cared so much about, but, well, he's not so bad. And I think it's so cute that he puts an 'x' at the end of most of his DAS posts.
You can only help those who WANT to help themselves...what if Thom gave him a thousand bucks? He probably would have bought more booz & pills...I think that is what makes this song sad...you can't always help those in need , even if you try....
@Ms2blue1pink but if that's the only thing in the world that can make someone happy (and sometimes it is) then so be it. I stopped giving money to the homeless for about a year because I just thought "they might just spend it on drugs". But so what if they do? Its so so so so extremely difficult to pull yourself of the cycle of homelessness that if getting high is the only escape they have and the only thing that brings them a bit of happiness then so be it.
@SlinkiestTortoise23 you're pretty dumb if you you think Thom saw the man and then literally went and wrote the song instead of calling an ambulance. Isn't it more likely that this song was written later on with that experience in mind?
@WickedLiquid Do you know Thom personally then?, what a load of Twaddle!.
The track was featured on the Com Lag release (2004) and was released on EMI (A major worldwide record label). Somehow, after the success of OK Computer and all the rest of it, I suspect that Mr Yorke had a few bob in his pocket and could have easily afforded to buy the homeless man a sandwich. Makes me laugh how people romanticise about bands like Radiohead when really they are no different to Madonna.
@SlinkiestTortoise23 You asked why Thom didn't do anything, I answered. He witnessed a homeless man pass away before he was a famous musican and had the money to help him. Yes, the album was released in 2004, it doesn't mean Thom didn't have a life before Radiohead. In fact, the song Motion Picture Soundtrack off of Kid A (2000) was written before their first album even came out. If you don't want to believe me then that's fine, but you don't need to have a hissy fit over it LOL
@WickedLiquid Also, another point, it is all very well and good, being all 'arty' and 'anti-corporate' 'after' you have been signed to a Major record label. Hypocritical if you ask me. I mean, In Rainbows made the band an enormous amount of money as compared to the money that they would have received were they in a recording contract, they just cut out the middleman BUT! they needed the marketing that EMI provided prior otherwise nobody would have even heard their music..
oh man this song is so important to me right now for a lot of reasons. when you're scared about your future this song brings out the bittersweet and lonliness in you
this song can mean a plethora of things, I would say )( and I know I don't speak for Thom) but he would want you to place in your perspective and what it means to you...It encapsulates feelings I have about a lost relationship...but it doesn't have to mean that to everyone...
Thom's guitar playing is so beautiful, up their with the acousitc greats in my opinion. Another example of his amazing acoustic is in the clock live, so brilliant
listen to this its clearly obviously about thom having drink problems and how drunks always think there fine!!! Hence the couple more for breakfast and a little more fore tea line... and the move along thers nothing left to see line.... fucksake listen and stop making up stories about homeless people.
Really sad song..Thom said he wrote it about a homeless guy. He watched him die in the street and watched as people just walked past. very sad but I suppose it really does sum up the human race.
@megamattlolz Where do people hear these crazy stories? A major corporation had put a gagging order on Thom to not talk about some global warming issues.
@vaf88 No offence mate but I think I speak for all Radiohead fans on here when I say that 100% of the time people who don't like Radiohead don't have a mature music taste.
Also, why comment on a video slating them? You knew you would get slated. Piss off. This music means a lot to a lot of people
Not my point, my point is that he seems depressed and always wanting to die and writing dark lyrics when I can't see what troubles he's going through anymore
No, he sometimes says exactly what he means by them. It's not positive things. If you interpret some of them in a positive way I'd be interested in hearing which and how..
Did it ever occur to you that what sounds depressing to one person could sound incredibly compassionate and heart-breaking to another? I believe I heard somewhere that this song was written about a homeless man who was dying on sidewalk and was ignored by everybody that passed by him. Hows that for whining?
Well in that case, I wish he'd donate way more of his earnings (like, 90% and he'd still have plenty of money) to scientific research, scholarship funds, and aid to hard working poor people...
@CEIVE4EVER Precious would be the word to describe this. The fragile strength of the guitar and of course Thom Yorke's otherworldly voice are priceless.
@n0hkabuki Ya know everytime I think "this is one of my favorite Radiohead songs" I stumble onto another one I like just as much .I guess I have a lot of favorite Radiohead songs...LMAO!
@garyhead22 they are in and out of the studio, but are probably taking things slow being is they got back from a big tour. I think I heard from a little bird that its comping around in april '10.
Just go through the older stuff and the smaller compilations and before you know it it'll be there.
This band is probably the best thing thats happened to music for a while.
Thom yorke said that the thing that inspired him to write this song, was that he saw a homeless man dying in the street and people just walked past him and did nothing about it.
@BifftaBoy Oh, I thought that the song was about himself. Which for the lyrics would be as sad as the story you tell, but it´s a beautiful song though.
@missflierg listen bro your right it is about him its about his drink problems in the past dont listen to these other tools making up stories about homless people just listen to the lyrics.
@BifftaBoy if tom saw a man dying on the the street and we just sitting there watching people not helping the man die, then what was tom yorke doing while he watched the people?
absolutely beautiful.

Really sad song..Thom said he wrote it about a homeless guy. He watched him die in the street and watched as people just walked past. very sad but I suppose it really does sum up the human race.
megamattlolz 1 year ago
@megamattlolz Where do people hear these crazy stories? A major corporation had put a gagging order on Thom to not talk about some global warming issues.

Such a brilliant song, my favourite lines are:
"I know what you're thinking, but I'm not your property. No matter what you say, no matter what you say"
and
"A couple more for breakfast, a little more for tea, just to take the edge off, just to take the edge off"
I love how much hurt is in his voice in the second line as he sings the first "just to take the edge off"
Beautiful song :)

@vaf88 No offence mate but I think I speak for all Radiohead fans on here when I say that 100% of the time people who don't like Radiohead don't have a mature music taste.
Also, why comment on a video slating them? You knew you would get slated. Piss off. This music means a lot to a lot of people

thom yorke is rich and can do whatever he wants, why so sad
Transfectingood 2 years ago
Money doesn't make you happy....He is doing what he wants.
1964go 2 years ago 3
Not my point, my point is that he seems depressed and always wanting to die and writing dark lyrics when I can't see what troubles he's going through anymore

What is your point about money? Besides you know little about this singers psychological state.
1964go 2 years ago 2
maybe thats just the way you relate to them.
MatthewCarsonRhodes 1 year ago 2
No, he sometimes says exactly what he means by them. It's not positive things. If you interpret some of them in a positive way I'd be interested in hearing which and how..
Transfectingood 1 year ago 3
I know im just giving you a hard time. As lame of a person as Thom Yorke is .. his music is great.
MatthewCarsonRhodes 1 year ago
lol, wasnt expecting that
Transfectingood 1 year ago
@Transfectingood
Did it ever occur to you that what sounds depressing to one person could sound incredibly compassionate and heart-breaking to another? I believe I heard somewhere that this song was written about a homeless man who was dying on sidewalk and was ignored by everybody that passed by him. Hows that for whining?
SJamesGray 1 year ago
@Transfectingood empathy is not for everyone.

@Transfectingood you can have all the material things in the world, but it never changes what's inside of you.

Well in that case, I wish he'd donate way more of his earnings (like, 90% and he'd still have plenty of money) to scientific research, scholarship funds, and aid to hard working poor people...
Transfectingood 1 year ago
@Transfectingood who knows how much he donates, maybe he just doesn't brag about it or announce to the public like many celebs

@CEIVE4EVER Precious would be the word to describe this. The fragile strength of the guitar and of course Thom Yorke's otherworldly voice are priceless.

Sad story
BifftaBoy 2 years ago 34
@BifftaBoy Oh, I thought that the song was about himself. Which for the lyrics would be as sad as the story you tell, but it´s a beautiful song though.
missflierg 1 year ago
@missflierg listen bro your right it is about him its about his drink problems in the past dont listen to these other tools making up stories about homless people just listen to the lyrics.
wood5y1 1 year ago
@BifftaBoy lol, so he just wrote a song about him and let him die haha
vaf88 1 year ago
@BifftaBoy did he go on to say whether he then did something about it, or did he walk past also?

Caulfield789 1 year ago
@BifftaBoy Did he do anything about it besides writing a song?
acuity67 1 year ago
@BifftaBoy if tom saw a man dying on the the street and we just sitting there watching people not helping the man die, then what was tom yorke doing while he watched the people?
bigbobboi 1 year ago
@BifftaBoy so does that mean Thom walked by him too and just wrote a song about it? is that any better?
