The thing that set Jake apart from nearly every wrestler concerning promos (aside from Foley) was that he rarely (if not ever) repeated himself. With guys like the Rock, Austin, even Flair (to some extent), the focal point of their promos was the catchphrases. And because of that, once their catchphrases caught on with fans, it seemed like they just went through the motions with the rest of the promos. Whereas Jake always had something new to say and it was always relevant and captivating.

Jake was so great as a heel when he first came to the WWF...dark, mysterious, edgy...this was right around when I first started watching wrestling I think this clip is from October of 1986 I started watching like in May of that year...right after Wrestlemania 2...he was great as a heel and also as a face for a couple years but soon after that there became nothing more to do with his character he turned heel again but that was inexplicable he became pointless at a certain point...

@XxowendanxX Agreed he was so talented and so good at all parts of his role including actual wrestling - not just promos - that he definately wasn't given any chance to win anything including the IC because the never had a fight in many big matches at all(including few if any title fights) and the few he had (aka later in his career, when he turned heel he lost everything for some reason) like the Macho and Taker he lost.

@MrGranthill33 Jake's character didn't seem like a person who wanted to compete for titles...he was a loner...the entire rest of the WWE was looking for titles and glory and to prove they were great...Jake's character just seemed sadistic...he wanted to DDT someone and throw the snake on them...the wrestlers of the '80s were more like fighters...it wasn't all about fancy moves like it is today...back in the day, they almost all used the same moves...it was more about personalities and mic skills

I remember one interview where Jake quoted the opening lines from Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here", I remember thinking this guy is some kind of different. His delivery could occassionally be so powerful. Not as consistent as Slick Rick or the Rock, but sometimes he was the absolute best.

Those of you who don't believe that The Rock was an all time great on the mic, weren't really watching wrestling. I ranked him 2nd all time. The beauty of Jake's promos were he had you wondering was it real or was it just him putting himself over. I ranked him 6th all time. Two definite masters of the mic. Different styles too so I hope you don't make the mistake of comparing The Snake who played on fear in his promos and The Rock who was very comical in his. I ranked Flair number 1 by the way.

@TheLuscious One of the great things about Slick RIck aka Space Mountain, Woooooo! was he put everybody over. If he was with the Horsemen, he always included the Andersons, Tully Blanchard etc... and of course, himself. Same for his matches, completely selfless. I'd rank Ric Flair as the best all around professional wrestler for the years I've been watching (early 70s on). The Rock might have become my top wrestler, but his career was too short - at least this far (here's hoping for a return).

Not quite. Jake's mental psychology in his promos was untouchable, except maybe by Flair. Jake made you believe that the DDT was dangerous and his promos were chilling and had that hidden comical element in it (see Koko B. Ware promo about Frankie).

Jake didnt have a typical wrestler body, or great technical ability. He was so huge because of his eyes. He could look right through you and freeze you in your spot. The best wrestler I have faced.
