And a 3rd., I may add, was WBZ-TV Channel 4 in Boston. On Monday nights, they would precede their playing of it with some students from Crotched Mountain School performing the Lord's Prayer in sign language while an announcer read it in a very slow manner(if I may add).
@kevinomreb - I'm as curious as you are as to which orchestra played this rendition. Alas, I'm sure Saxton Graphics (which produced this elaborate film) no longer exists, and in any case I don't know of anyone who would know for sure who'd arranged this version. Did WCET show the copyright notice that came on as the flag on the moon was fading out?
ALSO: I seem to remember a gun shot going off ( like "the shot heard round the world) at the image of the kid pointing at the British soldier... just before going into the main body of the National Anthem...huh...does anyone else remember this???
WNEW-TV [Channel 5] in New York used this as a sign off in the '70s; however, from 1978 through the early '80s, they substituted a montage of taped "scenes of New York" under a superimposed flag fluttering in the breeze, over the soundtrack, bracketed by a "disco" version of "The Marines Hymn".
This film was produced in 1971 by Saxton Graphic Associates, Ltd.; their copyright notice was seen after the shot of the flag on the moon. Alas, most stations (including WAVE) cut off the copyright notice; the only two stations I know of that mentioned who produced the "Flag Evolution" were WNEW-TV and Milwaukee's WITI (Channel 6).
@wmbrown6 WTAF-TV 29 in Philadelphia used this to sign-on in the mid-1970's at 8:55AM before programming began at 9:00AM and they also showed the copyright.
"Flag Evolution" was also often played at AAFES theatres during the 70s since all performances began with the national anthem (as seems fitting for a military outfit) would be followed by the previews and then the feature film. I remember this from the AAFES theatres at Travis AFB, CA and Altus AFB, OK back then.
Even local channels don't sign off anymore;if it isn't reruns,it's infomercials.

i would stay up late as a kid just to watch this...who's the orchestra???

Don't mark my word for it, and if someone knows better, please tell me so, but I would say the orchestra is Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops.

They were still using this less than a year ago. I have noticed recently if they still do or not.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
I wish they played the Canadian Anthem before every flick: what a way to respect the country we live in.

Last I saw Wave sign on the air had to be back in 2003 or 2004 because I was waiting to see sunrise, they still used this anthem.

They still use this

do they ever sign off these days?

We sign-off fans refer to this film as Flag Evolution. And there are obvious reasons why it is called that.
