One more thing--to want to "unmask" and "expose" the people with the courage to stand up to the police dooms every occupation (like the one in Oakland!) that might ever be evicted to helplessness in the face of police attacks. That means that we can do nothing except what our rulers permit us to do. There wouldn't be an occupation in Oakland anymore if it weren't for the courageous ones.

So the "unmaskers" are enemies of the occupation movement who want to end it.

There will always be people (often more privileged people, but not always) who want everything to stay tame--that is, people who think that the current injustices are OK or that the system works. Also, I will note that no fires started, nor any violence, until the police first attacked with tear gas at 11 50 pm. Taking over the foreclosed on former homeless service building and opening it up to be run for and by the people is good, but should have been done differently.

Does the tear gas effect people who live in downtown Oakland who had no part in the broken windows or fires? Yes it does. Your argument holds no water, so step down. In Quebec during the G20 summit protesters unmasked several provocateurs throwing rocks and tried to identify them as police. Much later Quebec police admitted that they were in fact police. Police provocateurs were used - bussed in and then out the same day and vandalized while police stood by. The "agents" cried out against police brutality last week, (and the world focused on Scott Olsen). Mayor Quan basically apologized, and the police issued a statement that they were confused. THAT is called progress. Added to that, the "Shut down the city" day turned out fantastically. Thousands came and felt united and good. The police "let it be." That wasn't enough for these hoodlums. Now, it's clear where the brutality comes from.

With the US more and more like Soviet Russia, I support people wearing masks. Saying everything has to be "transparent" excludes anyone who doesn't want his boss to see him at a protest. When repressive police hold all the cards, it's downright stupid to fetishize legality. Freedom is not just given to whoever obeys the law--it's only won by those who stand up for themselves.

The fire would've counteracted the tear gas if it had been let alone. And the cops were bound to use gas regardless.

I'm a chemist and I can tell you right now that a fire isn't going to help you against tear gas (lachrymators, the active chemical agents in tear gas canisters are relatively stable compounds and unless the lachrymator is in the fire its not going ot break down...so unless you light yourself on fire there is not protection).

If you go to any of the Occupy Oakland events I would encourage everyone to not wear masks. The presence of mask is the easiest way to spot the troublemakers, because they have something to hide and are preparing themselves for conflict (tear gas). If you see someone wearing a mask they are just a faceless obstacle in the way of a real movement about the economy and the structure of American society. If you see a masked person ask them to unmask, ask them why are they here?
