This is very useful - I'm a guitarist who makes his own tunes but I've just started trying to add keys to it (using a Clavinola). Your tutorials are clear and concise and very useful. Thanks for posting.
Great advice here. You can apply a similar technique to a guitar, economise your playing with inversions, changing only the notes you need to in order to make your playing smoother.
The best thing you can do if you want to learn by ear is to learn inversions, intervals and learn the keyboard/fretboard inside out. Train your ears to be able to distinguish between various chord tonalities, major, minor, augmented, diminished, etc. You'll be amazed what your ears can do when you put them to work!
it's weird that there is a technique on how to play by ear when i've been able to do this before i even had a piano class and this is a weird way to do this... xD
I want to start playing on the piano, or keyboard. I've been looking at all videos like these but they are no good because I don't get what there saying haha, this is nice and simple for me. Thanks!
this helps. i've recently gotten comfortable playing a number of songs with all sorts of varied chords using both hands, but i've just been playing the same 13 5 with both hand just in the neighboring octaves and it sounds boring and stale. this improves the sound for sure.
so you say I can get the chords to a song lets say chords are "G B A" I can play any pattern between this chords and the song will sound as the original song? please reply (:
@chuy14nba - yes and no (ha I sound like a politician) Yes = if you learn the same patterns that the original artist used. No = Once you learn a whole library of rhythmic patterns, you'll be able to bring your own sound to the song. At that point, it won't sound like a carbon copy, it will sound like your own version of the song. That's really the power of this course - your own voice in the music. The goal is to be able to do both - carbon copy and your own arrangement.
Wow. I could cry I am so happy!! I used to play as a youngster and did not realize the "wealth" that I had at my fingertips. I stopped playing and have longed to get back to it for years but it seemed as though it were a different language... like I had never really played at all. This video has unlocked something in me and I really think I could regain a great portion of what I lost over the years. Thanks for these keys!!!!!
@craigmarieforever - I almost don't know what to say. That is super cool. Please let me know how it goes as you continue to dig into the piano lessons. Best wishes - David Sprunger
Ok- this guy is good at what he does, but could some music majors back me up on this?- He's trying to trick us into thinking that Rythmic Patterns and "Open Voicing Positions are revolutionary. All he's doing is inverting the triads. You can invert any chord and make it sound "richer" And then play those chords to a rythmn. Even if you don't know how to count (note wise) you can still keep a beat. This isn't anything new.
@whatthewindblewin - those are great insights. However, "Voicing" a chord is not the same as inverting. Inverting a chord means to take the bottom note of a chord and place it up on top - still retaining the original positions of all the other notes. To "Voice" a chord means to arrange the notes in any location and order on the keyboard - you can even omit notes for a voicing. "Rhythmic Patterns" are one step beyond - breaking the "Voicings" up rhyhmically.
@whatthewindblewin he's not really trying to say it's revolutionary it's just something Begginers don't know and that's what this course if for begginers lol
I have always played strictly by ear since starting at four. All I do is listen to the rhythm of the music and play it. Anyone can learn but it's dedication (ppl fail to say that who do play sometimes) and practice. Great video :)
@riakun I'm doing the same, but I often get stuck with a single tone in the melody, and I'm unable to create an awesome accompaniment for the other hand :(
i can already learn by ear. i just havta remember what the notes in the song sound like and mess with the keys a bit. thats how i learned the happy potter theme and welcome to the black parade and a bunch of other songs.

I play by ear, and play for church every Sunday. I have to learn new songs on the weekly bases. But I'd like to squeeze your program into my busy schedule. Between work, and rehearsing new songs its a bit of a challenge. I downloaded and practiced with your "Ear training 101" program. I've been playing piano almost all my life - but I have plenty of room for improvement. I'm looking forward to mastering the piano and keyboards as your do. If possible, I'd like to contact your for advise. Thanks
Hi Sir: i am just looking for ideas how to create teaching the piano. nothing like what you are doing, just want to know what camara you use. i would appreciate the help.
To me, it seems like the point of the course is more about creating your own arrangement of a piece, but will it also show how to use rhythmic patterns to be able to play it note for note? Or is that just something a person with perfect pitch could do?
My mother could play ANY song by ear. I have seen someone hum a few bars of a tune and she just needed just a few minutes to play it. Her speciality was boogie and ragtime as played by Winifred Atwell in the fifties. Unfortunately, my childhood was disruped (through no fault of my mother) and she never got the chance to teach me. I remember watching her fingers fly around the keys and promising myself I will one day play like her. I want to thank you for this video cos I know I can do it now.
Thanks!~ I'm still in beginner class... but its my last year of high school..meaning I wont be able to reach the ear-training/advance class of piano >.< So thanks .. I've been wanting to learn to play the piano quickly..and better x]
Hmm, Helps alot, but if you listen to a song any song does the left and right hand have the same chords? or do they change? and do you have to know the chords to play a song?
I love your video! It is very helpful. It is one of the most professional, yet simple lessions, I have ever listened to. Thank you for making it available to everyone.
my friend can play by ear and its so annoying lol, he was able to play by ear at day 1 of playing the piano, i wish i could though but how long on average does it take someone to play by ear?

It is true that you can become a fantastic piano player from ear training, using chords, scales and arpeggieos, ear training is key as in knowledge and theory and knowing your way around the keys understanding the music better it is something you can lose out on if you only learn to read sheet music, BUT I still think that learning to read music is a vital skill for a painist to possess. Also it is not easy to get excellent on the piano no matter how you do it, it won't come overnight.
@Wilde4Ever - I totally agree. I always like to tell my students that the best musicians are the most well-rounded - able to play by ear, able to play in groups, able to take solos, able to read, etc. Playing by ear is one of the necessary skills that really isn't taught much in local lessons, while reading is a very common skill that is taught (although it takes years to become a fantastic reader). Music is limitless - always room to improve and grow! Best wishes - David Sprunger
@Wilde4Ever I played saxophone from 4th grade until my senior year in high school(performance arts school), and I wished that I would have learned the piano by ear instead. I always felt inferior to my classmates that could figure out any song by ear, and I couldn't even memorize songs because of my bad ear. I was just a technician. Now, that I want to start writing music, a good ear and piano skills would take me a long way! Now I'm contemplating buying a midi sax because I can play the keys:(
Ok, I just saw that the free ET 101 is a demo, so I need to buy the real stuff. Tell me, can I follow the steps of the ET 101 at the same time as learning the technics of this video, or do I need to take the different lessons one at the time?
What steps do you suggest me to follow? Thanks for the good work! Awesome tutorials!
Hello, I have been playing for three years, and I'm not an advanced student yet. I'm still struggling with learning the chords, classical music, pop music, always with music sheets, but I WANT to play by hear.
I'm checking out your website, but I'm lost as to what I need exactly, there's so much stuff (it's a compliment)... first I downloaded for free the ET101 video, is that the complete video even if it's free? Then, what do I have to download/buy to keep on learning how to play by ear?
I can't play by sheet nor by ear. I 'm such a failure. I've been learning keyboard for far too long now. I'm regretful that I don't know how to play by ear or sheet.
@jejemara31 - Thanks for your comments. Yes, check out our video on "Ear Training 101". That program trains your ears to hear the distances between intervals on the keyboard - both melodies and chords. Sounds like you really want to dig in. Best wishes! David Sprunger
@jejemara31 - I can tell you have a passion to really dig in. I've been playing for many years and still am really hungry to learn. You talked about "listening skills..." yes - check out our program on "Ear Traning 101". (You can punch that into the youtube search and you'll find it). Best wishes - David Sprunger
@jejemara31 - Thanks for your comment. Yes - check out "Ear Training 101". I just updated it to include up to 4 notes in both melodic (notes following one another) and harmonic (notes at the same time) modes. I still get really challenged by that program! Best wishes - David Sprunger
Wow this looks really good and much simpler than I imagined it to be!
I am wondering though, if you are playing a song by ear how are you able to tell which chords you need in the first place? Would you need to look them up and then use the rythmic patterns around that or is there also a way of doing that by ear too? Alsom where can i get the rest of this course? It is really interesting! Is it free? Thanks so much :)
@Laurenyeah93 I'm a guitarist, so this may not be the same on the piano, but on guitar you would identify the single note first - ie the A note, or B, or C, and then once you had that you would learn the whole A chord, or B, or C.
@piano9899. sir. I thought it is impossible to play piano by ear. I am very confused especially for using the left hand. I want to play a lot of songs using my ear.
@jmac1334 - yep, I've heard the same things. For instance, when I was a UCNorthridge, I was a piano performance major (classical) but also played in the jazz band. Both sides would bad mouth each other- I kind of was bummed about that. I just learned to keep my head down and practice!. Since then, I've always told my students that it's best to learn EVERYTHING! Learn to play by ear, learn to read, etc etc. I've been playing a long time and still have a lot to learn.
hello sir :) ive got a question too, when we can play piano by ear will we also be able to hear a song on the radio in just a matter of minutes play it on your piano? im all up for making my own music but i would like more to make my own versions of my favorite songs but of coarse i need to know how to play the original song before i can "tweek" it. ALSO... is this a free thing? i dont think my dad will pay for a copy :/ (im only thirteen but have wanted to learn to play piano for a long time)
@awwwsnapitsviki - If you can't afford it, I'd be happy to send you the link to download the course free of charge. You gotta promise to practice though! :) If you're 13 I bet you have the time it takes to get to be a world-class player. If you'd like to do that, go to our website and click on Customer Service (Top Right). In your comments, paste in my comments here and I'll make sure it gets to you. Best wishes - David Sprunger
the one thing i don't get is, lets say (for example): i listen to a song and at some point there's a piano solo. if i played it by ear and i played A chord but in the actual piano solo, the guy doesn't play an A chord. Will it sound relevant to the song? so how would i know what chord should i play depending the song?
have any of you guys actually got good on this advice? im not insulting the video im just curious to see if this really works. did any of you guys not know how to play now know how based off of this?
I'm not sure I get the Open Voicing - are you playing just some of the notes of the cord on you right hand and "fill in" the rest with your left? Or do you play a Closed Cord with one hand and add a not or two of the same cord, with the other?
@ravager1987 - Yes, the content is the same, however, it's in a different format. For downloads, we use a standalone program (made in flash) that runs the video for either Windows or Mac. Also, the DVD is higher resolution.
I had piano lesson when I was a little kid. I was taught how read music by playing chords. I pretty much know how to play. Reading music is getting tough for me because I played by ear so much or was taught by someone how to play a song. I did play the organ at church. The music is really easy to read. I love playing church music and also was in a choir since I was a child. I know I can get better if I really put my mind into it.

I still don't get the rhythmic stuff. Is it that we are supposed to play with 2 chords everytime?

I find it better if you play with your fingers!!
MrRicksym 1 year ago 4

I am sorry but learning the piano by ear is a bad habit and not the proper way. You are supposed to memorize the keys, aren't you?

Thanks!~ I'm still in beginner class... but its my last year of high school..meaning I wont be able to reach the ear-training/advance class of piano >.< So thanks .. I've been wanting to learn to play the piano quickly..and better x]

@jejemara31 You can't do it with your ears. You only listen with your ears. You MUST play using your fingeres and thumbs.

Laurenyeah93 1 year ago
@Laurenyeah93 I'm a guitarist, so this may not be the same on the piano, but on guitar you would identify the single note first - ie the A note, or B, or C, and then once you had that you would learn the whole A chord, or B, or C.

ALSO... is this a free thing? i dont think my dad will pay for a copy :/ (im only thirteen but have wanted to learn to play piano for a long time)
awwwsnapitsviki 1 year ago

I'm not sure I get the Open Voicing - are you playing just some of the notes of the cord on you right hand and "fill in" the rest with your left? Or do you play a Closed Cord with one hand and add a not or two of the same cord, with the other?

I had piano lesson when I was a little kid. I was taught how read music by playing chords. I pretty much know how to play. Reading music is getting tough for me because I played by ear so much or was taught by someone how to play a song. I did play the organ at church. The music is really easy to read. I love playing church music and also was in a choir since I was a child. I know I can get better if I really put my mind into it.
