@marr21 Although she attributes the song to Richard Rodgers in her introduction, the lyrics were written by the best lyricist of the 20th century, Lorenz Hart. A tragic figure whose lyrics often reflect his melancholy. This song is a perfect example.
Jane Monheit does the song justice on this clip. Excellent,
She takes me back to a young Ann Jillian before the cute blond hair, when Ann was the red-headed torch singer for composer Sammy Cahn in his "Words & Music" show - how lovely Jane is and boy they both can sing for me any day! Thank you for posting this gem! Jane is wonderful! Musicians are all first call, best!

Some singers if they are good can take a song like this and by the end of their performance they have done it justice. Jane is on a whole level up from this. She takes the beautiful song and interpretes the words and melody with such understanding that she soothes, comforts, questions and answers all that the composer intended. One is left with a beautiful song that has been enhanced by her talent-rare indeed!
Because Richard Rodgers was the one who composed the music. Lorenz Hart wrote the words. Most people do not seem to care who wrote the words to most songs, unfortunately.
We have seen her twice in Harrisburg and hope she returns. She did this the second time we saw her. She is totally amazing and this performance is incredible. The song is so touching. The lyrics are sad and melancholy. And it was meant for Jane to sing. During her Harrisburg performance, the second time we say her, she wore a black dress and lots of rhinestones and for this song, they blackened the stage and had a small light only on her face. It was something I'll always remember.
saw her twice in Harrisburg, PA and when she did this song she brought the house down!
