Lovely engine. Is an engine like this durable enough for road racing? (think thats what you call circuit racing) Also, how much would this engine with this spec cost?
if you want to build a big block you will want to find a 429 cobrajet there were a few two bolt main blocks but you will want a fourbolt main otherwise you will tear the bottom end out of it these blocks accept the same parts as a 460 so there are alot of preformance parts avalible plus the heads are the same ones that ford racing is still putting out only now they are aluminum but still the same castings

My 72 351C H.O. R-Code has three trophies for first and second N/A for 11.3 in 1973.
The 72 HO is the same engine as the 72 except with low compression to comply with new regulations. The open chambers allow the engine to breathe better so if you change the timing you will get high compression that breathes better making the 72 HO faster than the 71 Boss.
Still own my 72.
BTW old Ford engines and Mopars dominated Chevy engines.
@thoof2001 The 72HO had open chamber heads and lower compression to comply with regulations. We simply changed the timing back to where the 71 Boss was at and got the high compression back plus the open chamber heads breath a lot better giving a performance increase over the 71!
I have read all over the mustang forums that the 351C will take the 427 stock for stock.
My uncle had a 69 440 Roadrunner and he would wash my fathers mustang off the line, but here is his own words "the car would slingshot past him and always win in the quarter"
BTW our mustang gets like less than 10mpg city. Mileage only increases to 17mpg hwy if we are doing 80mph or more.

How can you compare Gen-3 type engines to iron Windsor/Clevelands? They have the advantage of 30 years more development.
Here in Aus, the LS1/LS2 alloy V8 is fitted to the GM Holden Commodore and while it produced the numbers on paper, time after time it's been said that they're gutless down low and just don't sound right.
LS1's are good value for horsepower but for how long? The first ones were attrocious for oil consumption and piston slap, and where I come from (Aus) they were replacing 1 in every 2 engines under warranty. That's stock, unmodified engines.
And another very important thing too, they sound shit...
So... gutless torque down low, poor reliability, and crap sounding.

fram sucks go with k&n, 351 windsors werent that great, now a cleveland is alot better 5.7s and 5.8s use too much gas for the power they make.. go with the 460 for your econoline :)
351-W after spending some wrench time and a few 100s we found that the engine had ruff idle bad timeing and start failure due to one pushrod being slightly bent. found purely by chance and each p-rod was chk'd by being rolled on a flat glass surface We believe the rod became damaged after the engine accelerated rapidly and and nearly crashed the vehicle. We don't know what caused the sudden acceleration but the engine is now running fine and has passed Ca. smog cert.
you did a fantastic job with that 351W I have seen more problems with 351s W or C does not matter , I'm at the point where I hate those engines. My dad likes em,I'll push my wheels around before dropping a Ford in.
The 351 Fords are SUPER reliable and durable as all hell. Maybe you're simply biased, I don't know...the 351 is a great motor. After working around a machine shop for a while I'd take the Ford over a 350 ANY day.
I believe you but it is because you know how to make them reliable. I'll be going in that direction but I need to know what resources to go to as I will be enheriting 5 351s and would not want to let my dads work be sold off if there is potential for building some good engines. one is bult nice but does not star anymore. He has problems with the distributor and timing. any tips would be appreciated.
If Ford is better than Chevy why do Ford V8s need bigger cams,intakes and carbs to make the same hp as a 350? Don't just blab back look at edelbrock dyno packages. Ask around. Then holler back.

LAST LONGER? The Chevy 350 has powered more vehicles the the 351 variants. If the 351 was better why are there 3 and each one has too many weaknesses.
tamapalagi is an idiot the only 351 ever made that had weaknesses was the 351m the 351 Cleveland was in my opinion the best v8 ever made and the 351w puts out alot of power for fairly good gas mileage.
i agree in australia the 350 chevs powered some of the monaros and reviews said the 350's could rev alot harder than the 351's.I would call the 351's economical gt falcons in australia used up 2 35L/100 kays.I had heard of reports if you pushed the 351's in the gt's to hard they would end up blowing up.
Production time does not have anything to do with it. It was around for close to 25- 30 years. How freaking long does it need to be around? Gotta move on to new technology eventually. port the heads, up the cam and put a carb on it, a beautiful engine..much more pleasing to the eye then mine, just a tad low on hp for the money it would have cost.
trumpet injection really only benifits for circut or methanol, otherwise the money is better spent porting heads ect

Oh i see why it did'nt break the 500 hp. mark it had a GM OIL FILTER ON IT SHIT CAN THAT FRAM FILTER AND PUT A MOTOCRAFT FILTER ON IT!! creampie once you grow a set of balls and sell your chevy shitbox then give us Men a holler. You know whats funny ford 347 Ford stroker = 625 HP and 383 Chevy stroker = 500 HP. The 347 is a 302 block and the 383 is a 350 chevy block. That is pretty fucking sad for power if you ask me. Trust me I have done my research a 351 Stroker I can get easily 800HP with no power adders like a shitbox chevy has to have to get any power.

fram sucks go with k&n, 351 windsors werent that great, now a cleveland is alot better 5.7s and 5.8s use too much gas for the power they make.. go with the 460 for your econoline :)

351-W after spending some wrench time and a few 100s we found that the engine had ruff idle bad timeing and start failure due to one pushrod being slightly bent. found purely by chance and each p-rod was chk'd by being rolled on a flat glass surface We believe the rod became damaged after the engine accelerated rapidly and and nearly crashed the vehicle. We don't know what caused the sudden acceleration but the engine is now running fine and has passed Ca. smog cert.

you did a fantastic job with that 351W I have seen more problems with 351s W or C does not matter , I'm at the point where I hate those engines. My dad likes em,I'll push my wheels around before dropping a Ford in.

The 351 Fords are SUPER reliable and durable as all hell. Maybe you're simply biased, I don't know...the 351 is a great motor. After working around a machine shop for a while I'd take the Ford over a 350 ANY day.

I'll be going in that direction but I need to know what resources to go to as I will be enheriting 5 351s and would not want to let my dads work be sold off if there is potential for building some good engines. one is bult nice but does not star anymore. He has problems with the distributor and timing. any tips would be appreciated.

If Ford is better than Chevy why do Ford V8s need bigger cams,intakes and carbs to make the same hp as a 350? Don't just blab back look at edelbrock dyno packages. Ask around. Then holler back.

i agree in australia the 350 chevs powered some of the monaros and reviews said the 350's could rev alot harder than the 351's.I would call the 351's economical gt falcons in australia used up 2 35L/100 kays.I had heard of reports if you pushed the 351's in the gt's to hard they would end up blowing up.

Production time does not have anything to do with it. It was around for close to 25- 30 years. How freaking long does it need to be around? Gotta move on to new technology eventually. Freaking GM keeps finding ways to push the 350 over and over again. And give new and exciting names like LT1 or LS1 and basically its the same damn 350 cube boat anchor that has been used over and over again. Im honestly sick of seeing them. Time for something new.

Yeah your right!!! Now do you know why?? Because they have the biggest aftermarket following in the country and you can buy more shit for them than any other car. They are quick bone stock and can be complete beasts for very little money. Oh yeah...And when the Crapmaro and Transam were in production ford sold more mustangs than GM sold Camaros and Trans am's combined.. Mustang has a very strong heritage behind it thats not going away any time soon.

tamapalagi , you do know that Chevy's cams suck and that they snap in half ,and after this incident happens and you have to rebuild your motor you will have to take off the oil and you will find the cam broken in many pieces at the bottom of the motor at the bottom of the oil pan. thats why ford cams are bigger so they don't break

because back in the 70's chevy bitched about ford producing so much horsepower, NHRA made ford go to the open chamber head and was'nt allowed to run the closed chamber anymore for a while, research to see when chevy was forced to go to the open chamber? i will answer that for you they never were made do it!! another thing when you build more compression, duh!! that means more exhaust to deal with. Yes my dad is that and more,he does his own work because of bad experiences with crooked mechanics,one mechanic was very sorry,don't F with a bad ass 3rd div.infantryman no matter how old he is. Now I have a 98' Toyota with 311K miles ,passed smog cert every time,no adjustments,strong.70 miles per/day.You can wear the idiot shirt till your 351 does that.

I've seen more than a few videos of 2002-2005 Corvettes (420 hp) pulling away from brand new Lamborghinis on the highway. Now lets try it with the 7.0L (505 hp) or 6.2 s/c (620 hp) Corvettes or even the new 550 hp Caddy CTS-V. Only a top-end Ferrari will be able to accelerate as fast as the latter American cars. But throw a rod on a Ferrari and compare the cost to throwing a rod on a 'Vette. I'd rather have the 'Vette.....

port the heads, up the cam and put a carb on it, a beautiful engine..much more pleasing to the eye then mine, just a tad low on hp for the money it would have cost.
trumpet injection really only benifits for circut or methanol, otherwise the money is better spent porting heads ect
