Just a correction to the video's description - this was not a railroad bridge, this bridge carries vehicular and pedestrian traffic [and was out of commision for over three months while they repaired it].
The vessel was the Windoc... "was" being the key word as the ship was too damaged to repair. The incident took place on August 11, 2001, on the Welland Canal [Bridge #11 in Allanburg, Ontario]. The only person on the bridge was the bridge operator who I believe was found to be impaired during the course of his duties. No deaths, no injuries. I don't know what happened to the operator, my guess is he was probably fired, but I don't know for certain.
That ship's going to be in dry-dock for a couple of weeks.

The bridge was torn off just over him. Windoc drifted to the shore and shore based fire crews assisted in extinguishing the blaze on board. Contarry to many people's opinion, the boat's crew were not at fault. It was the bridge operator who lowered the bridge down thinking Windoc had cleared the bridge.

This is what happened.... The bridge operator was intoxicated or on prescription drugs and thought the ship had passed safely under the bridge so he started to lower the bridge. Obviously the ship had not yet passed completely and hit the bridge. One of the crew members stayed in the control tower to keep the ship on course. He was very brave, but when the tower hit he laid flat on the floor to protect him self. As the bridge passed 2 feet over him it also cleared all the debris out and away from him. As you can see, the section of tower he is in barely misses the bridge. When the ship hit, the bridge it broke a fuel line and ignited the diesel fuel in the line starting the fire.***continued***
The crew tried desperately to control the fire but when the fire reached the main fuel tanks they had to abandon ship or risk being blown up. I do not think the tanks ever blew up. Once most of the crew was off of the ship they began searching for the man who stayed behind in the tower. They eventually assumed he was dead. Miraculously, he showed up a few minutes later unharmed. After the accident the ship was taken to a scrap yard to be cut down and used as a barge.***continued***
The captain of the ship said "it felt like loosing a child". You must remember, captains invest there money in there ship for any maintenance there baby needs, also they take care of there ship keeping it clean, and they spend a lot of time on there ship. They really become connected with there ship so its a really sad thing when somthing like this happens.

This is what happened.... The bridge operator was intoxicated or on prescription drugs and thought the ship had passed safely under the bridge so he started to lower the bridge. Obviously the ship had not yet passed completely and hit the bridge. One of the crew members stayed in the control tower to keep the ship on course. (He is in the part of the tower where you can see a white light right behind the black windows.) ***continued down below***

He was very brave, but when the tower hit he laid flat on the floor to protect him self. As the bridge passed 2 feet over him it also cleared all the debris out and away from him. As you can see, the section of tower he is in barely misses the bridge. When the ship hit, the bridge it broke a fuel line and ignited the diesel fuel in the line starting the fire.***continued***

The crew tried desperately to control the fire but when the fire reached the main fuel tanks they had to abandon ship or risk being blown up. I do not think the tanks ever blew up. Once most of the crew was off of the ship they began searching for the man who stayed behind in the tower. They eventually assumed he was dead. Miraculously, he showed up a few minutes later unharmed. After the accident the ship was taken to a scrap yard to be cut down and used as a barge.***continued***

The captain of the ship said "it felt like loosing a child". You must remember, captains invest there money in there ship for any maintenance there baby needs, also they take care of there ship keeping it clean, and they spend a lot of time on there ship. They really become connected with there ship so its a really sad thing when somthing like this happens.

yup this ship is the windoc one person was seriously injured and it was damaged so bad that they could not repair it. DONT DRINK ON THE JOB AND SHIT LIKE THIS WONT HAPPEN!

The ship crashing into the bridge was the "Windoc". No one was hurt or killed in this accident and it caused 10 million dollars in damage to the ship and bridge. The ship now is either going to be a barge/tug or be scrapped. It has never been repaired.

No, it happened at the Allenburg Bridge in Ontario, on the Welland Canal. The ship, "Windoc," owned by N.M. Paterson and Sons Ltd., was totalled.
There were no major injuries, but the shipping company couldn't afford the loss of the boat and ended up going out of business.
