@ReeperzOutdoors for sure brother... my friends Smith and Wesson would of made sure of that.. just for the fact to not have dangerous snakes around my kids!!! I know some people think all things need to live and be happy.. but the fact of the matter is if it can harm me I WILL KILL IT plane and simple
always carry a compression bandage and EPIRB. Immobilization is key. Never remove the venom from around the wound, it's used for identification. Never catch and kill, you'll get bitten again.
In ɐılɐɹʇsnɐ it really is life or death. I would be interested to hear national protocol from other countries.
I always lol at "kill at". That's when your going to get bitten.
tank god most all we deal with in colorado are rattlers. they let you know they are there and aren't usually found in the open on a hot day. don't stick your foot into a rock crevis or in a dark dank place during the day. if you hear the rattle. stand still and it will eventually get bored and crawl off. if not back off very slowly. the rattle basically says don't step on me.
You already gave us the answer to the first question which is that the snake is a water moccasin aka cottonmouth. It has the standard pit viper head, tanned hide colored skin on top (hence water moccasin), with some dark bands coming off of the belly scales.
There are a few ways that I know of, to treat venomous snake bites. First and foremost is to remove as much of the venom from the wound via suction, whether it is with an actual snake bite "plunger" or using your mouth.
Another method would be vaporization, which is helpful when you're alone and cannot reach the wound with your mouth. You can take a flame or ember and try to vaporize any venom that hasn't absorbed into the body. If you're in a remote location this may also cauterize the wound.
After you remove as much venom as possible, you need to apply a tourniquet above the bite. You should then immobilize the area of the bite by using a splint to prevent unnecessary blood flow.
Most importantly: you need medical attention! Unless you keep vials of antivenin on your person, you’ll definitely need help as soon as possible.
Just as a note: this type of first aid is meant for bites on the limbs and extremities. In a case of a facial or torso bite your only chance is professional emergency attention, though you should still try to remove as much venom as possible.
That's a Poisonous Cotton Mouth Water Moccasin. Notice the dark colored horizontal band on his head that runs through his eye. He was standing his ground when you first saw him and held his head high when he retreated. If you get bit by one you can use a suction kit but do not make any cuts whatsoever or apply a tourniquet. Do not take asprin or similar blood thinning painkillers. Move slowly and seek professional medical attention.
@labrat7357 thanks. I've been carrying the old school suction kits just for piece of mind. I watched these videos to find a better way. I've been lucky; nothing but dry bites and jean bites, but I refuse to hear that there's nothing you can do about a snakebite other than tough it out.
I live in Australia where the snake venom is a lot more lethal eg your diamond back rattler has has venom that will kill about 5000 mice (Lethal dose 50%) the Australian brown will kill around 100,000mice and the inland tipan will kill around 550,000 mice LD50. The first aid is a constrictive bandage not a toriquet as venom travels in the lymphatic system that can be compressed with less pressure. I have 4 x 6 inch wide bandages in every vehicle and in my back pack even for a day walk. Thanks.
There has been a severe shortage of rattlesnake anti venom in California for decades. We caught 12 rattlers last year. We use snake sticks and buckets and relocate them off the property. We are crazy tho, but they're rad animals!
@Rugghead98 Every one who goes off the tarmack need to know basic first aid for a snake bite. that is apply a constrictive bandage over the bite site, continue to the distal end of the limb and then continue all the way back up the limb. splint the limb and immobilise the patient. They get strechered out , they do not walk or they die.a tight constrictive bandage allows blood circulation and can remain in place for 90 to 120 min with no perminent damage to the limb. 4 crepe 6' bandages in kit.
I grew up in south east Texas we had ponds and crecks every were and we never had a prob with the snakes in any pace we would play as kids but we didn't go messing with them and they just left us alone as we did them. So don't go FUCKing with the snakes
Definitely a cottonmouth. I'm really surprised it didn't go after you as close as you were. I grew up in Florida and this is the only snake I have ever seen that will chase you. They're meaner than shit.
oh and i love youre videos i made a new channel called OutdoorReview and i will be reviewing and talking about survival/backpacking products and i hope my snake comment helped
it is no dought a cottonmouth aka water moccasin first dont panic, put a turnakit above the bit. keep bite below your hart becouse all of these things keep the venom from flowing faster thrugh your body seek medical help emedietly but dont run becouse that will get the hart beeting faster and make the venom flow faster if you dont know what type of snake it is kill it and bring it with you so they can properly identify the snake and give you the proper antivenom
That snake had no reason to strike, everything I saw in the vid said you were never even close to a striking range. Air temp plays a part in this too. By your dress, I do assume it was warm.
Tournequet on an extremity, and without question, to the hospital if you do not know the species. As far as that fella that wants to let every know he has a Glock, and is somehow an illiterate LEO, in this state you will lose that firearm and a few dollars killing snakes
dark like a cottonmouth, but cottonmouths are very aggressive snakes, I don`t belive one would just lie there without striking, my guess without a closer look, a black snake, chicken snake, bull snake... If bit, don`t panic, don`t cut on yourself, snakes don`t always release venom, use ice if you have it, get to hospital
AG4WT - wow!... you win Most Dumb Ass comment yet.. congratulations.
Problems w/ your stupid comment:
1) SEEING the snake means you aren't going to get bit. Just leave the damn thing alone to do it's natural activities of eating rodents. Snakes typically only bite when handled or surprised.
2) Are you really sure you can draw your chunky Glock and HIT the snake once it strikes at close range... or are you going to walk around in a low ready position shooting anything that looks like a snake?
I dont think it was a cotton mouth though...kinda blurry with my old eyes and the vid moving around like that..but around here, the water mocasins we have would not run....they his, and strike at you when you get that close...lol..maybe a copperhead...would have to see it in person to know for sure.
Trying to extract snake venom is almost totally useless...even if you get the bite cut the very second you are bitten....you will still have venom in your system....your best bet is to get to a hospital, calmly and without alot of excitement and running....they can administer liquids through IV,and something to ease the pain tilll it passes.
The only thing you can do is try to isolate the venom, constiction band on the bitten limb. try to relax. In most cases in north america venomous snake bites arent deadly, although they will make you feel like you wish you were dead. If you can get to hospital do that first, but if not get a lot of water before the venom takes effect, you will need it because you will probably vomit most of the water out of your body. Just lay down and wait it out, it will suck, no doubt about it
Tie off the wound. Cut the wound open in a X pattern and Suck and Spit .. Keep wound bound and walk SLOWLY to the nearest place you can Drive and use a phone
Eastern Cottonmouth. Pit viper closely related to Rattlesnake and Copperhead. Venom is Hemotoxic. Causes blood vessels to rupture. This pit viper snake can deliver the most painful venom from snake bite, versus neurotoxin which affects the CNS. It can also deliver varying amounts of venom - anywhere from a dry bite, to a full dose. They can be aggressive and will stand their ground. One minute they are nice, the next they will try to hunt you down and try to kill you.
in my experience here in texas the water moccasin is very very slow nothing to worry about. i use to live in nevada the snakes out there are a lot faster
I agree with stay away, no snake is worth playing with. here in east Ky we have the timber rattler, they are real bad asses. But you never said what you would do?? I would put a pressure bandage on, keep my heart rate down, and get med, help asap..
water moccasin and tie where ever bitten with a belt or something tight even a tourniquet and walk slow to keep your heart rate as low as possible in order to keep the venom from going through your system as fast and get to the Hospital ASAP!
It doesn't matter what kind of snake it is if you get an envenomated bite. The same antivenom is used for any of the possible varieties in the area, whether that be rattlesnake, copperhead, or cottonmouth. The only other type of possible snake is a coral snake, with obvious markings, and not a viper. CroFab is the common antivenom for those bites.
A bite from a cottonmouth only causes local trauma over a period of hours.
would killing it and taking it with you be a bad idea? if you didnt know what kind of snake it was that way you could have some one identify it for you since getting the RIGHT anit-venom is really important
Cotton mouth, 1st tie your belt around your limb preventing to much serculation but remove it every about 10 mins so you dont lose the limb then do it all over again.
back in the 70's they sold snake bit kits, all outdoor mags, said they were the shit, turns out they were not... you seem to know your stuff, this guy try's hard, but I don't think he know much about snake bits.
Coghlans makes snakebite kits similar to those you're talking about and Sawyer makes the Extractor, which is a much more efficient suction device that can be used for insect bites and stings.
There are no snakes in Hawaii. I have heard that you turnakit the affected limb if possible. I have no idea what you would do if you were bit on the main trunck of your body.
Patient should stay still and quiet. Clean the bite with soap or antiseptic. Keep bite area below the heart. Splint the affected area, or patient should at least refrain from motion of it.
Were that me? I'd have killed that snake. There are plenty of non-lethal snakes to kill rodents, insects, etc... I would have killed that lethal snake. You missed an opportunity. The only thing you can do is cut the wound, let it bleed some of the poison out and immediately apply a tight tourniquette with a belt, rope, or whatever you have to minimize the spread of the hemotoxin. Then you'd need to get to a major hospital as soon as possible. That's probably 90 minutes from you.
thats a water moccasin , if you were to get bit on the ankle I recomend you try to squeeze some venom out and place a tourniquet in the middle of your knee and you ankle and one above your knee , keep your heartbeat down and get the hell out of there
Do not put a tourniquet on unless you want to lose your limb. Unless you can get immediate help a tourniquet would cause severe damage to the tissue. Put tight wraps round your leg to reduce blood flow but don't cut it off unless you absolutely must. Damn OneWithGuns93, recommending to put "multiple tourniquets" on is not very good advice unless you meant just pressure wraps.
first of all there are no poisonous snakes in the united states. Poison is injested. Our dangerous snakes are VENEMOUS, venom is injected, so unless you go around eating raw snake venom they are not poisonous
pk, I agree with you on the difference between poison and venom, but snake venom isn't poisonous to ingest, It's just a protein. It isn't a good idea to eat it though, unless you're certain that you have no cuts in you mouth/throat and you don't have any ulcers.
pk066, good observation on the difference between poisonous and venomous. Most people don't make the distinction. Nice to get the real 'skinney'! Thanks!
in this age, a good idea would be (assuming you have one) to take a pic of the snake with your cell phone's camera. might help a doctor save your life.
Most poisonous snakes in America are vipers and can be identified by their triangle shaped head and slitted pupils. I think the one exception is the Coral Snake which can be identified by its red, yellow, black stripes. If red touches yellow, your a dead fellow. If bitten the most important thing to do is stay calm and get to a hospital.
Water moccasin a.k.a. cotton mouth because a female can open her mouth under water and display a bright white area so that her young can find her easily in murky water.
Cotton mouth, suck it up and walk to the car, then drive to the hospital. Use ice, smoke a cigaret and stay calm. Or dig a 6x6x3 foot hole and kiss your ass goodby.
Only good snake is a DEAD SNAKE.. This is unfortunately the reason i hate walking in the wilderness.. Its that time to really get out and scout for deer season.... I hate snakes, and have had way too many close encounters with snakes..especially this kind, and rattlers.. Guess i;m a woos... cause i am deadly scared of them..
I have the opposite opinion. The only good snake is a Live Snake. I have left snakes alone that I see around my home because they are good for pest control. They eat rodents, insects, and other critters that can infest your home. Spiders are also good for pest control.
I have recently acquired a couple 10 acres. My husband and I have killed about 6 very large copper heads. We use a little 410 with snake shot. That is a water moc, aka cotton mouth. If I were bitten or a loved one, I would try to stay calm and get to the hospital. I would NOT, cut the wound, try to suck out the venom, or tourniquet it at all. Ice perhaps if anything. The cold with shrink the vessels and perhaps slow circulation. Nicotine does this as well, so I would probably have a smoke. hehe
i know that if a snake bites you you don't run that will just speed up the vinom and it will get into your blood faster and u shoued do something to keep your mained off the bite
I am not to familiar with snakes in your area, but I believe that that is a cotton mouth, as several others have stated. As for treatment, I would tie something around my leg to restrict blood flow, to slow down the poison. Then I would walk, not run back to the truck, then drive to the nearest hospital. During this whole affair, it is important to remain calm, because if you get really worked up and scared, your heart will beat faster, causing the poison to move through your body faster.
cotton mouth. Don't bandage and call the 911 tell them your on your way with a cotton mouth bite and if you can kill the snake to show the hospital so you don't get the wrong antidote
I would use a shoe string and maybe a string from a hat like you are wearing and tie off right above the bite. Then tie off right above the knee as tight as possible. Then I would make a cut around the bite and squeeze some of the venom out. If you can kill the snake then do so and take it with you if not don't waste time. Then I would get a walking stick and walk to the truck trying to stay off of the bitten leg as much as I can. Because blood will flow a lot faster the more you use it.
our area of tennessee is noted for copperheads...they will bite ou wht out hesitation...we have rattlesnakes....but not too many...they will warn you before you bite you....last week a 96lb rattlesnake was killed in scott county tn...i dont want to see one that big myself...
Im no snake expert but my guess is cottonmouth (6th grade science:)
And if so, cottonmouths are not venomous but they do gunk up a lot of saliva and junk in their mouths when they bite, which typically leads some kind of skin irritation or infection.
So I'd say clean the wound thoroughly as possible, wrap it up and regardless of what type of snake, get to an emergency room as quick as possible. Better safe than sorry.
cont. try to take a clear picture of the snake. body and head especially. if it is just you and the victim. then you have to carry him to the vehicle if you can. but if there are 3-4 of you then take 2 long and sturdy sticks and take you shirts, pants whatever to make a stretcher. lay the vic on the make shift stretcher and then carry him as fast and as safe as possible to the vehicle. one u get to the vehicle lay him down and call the hospitol as soon as you get service. that is what i say.
its a water mocasin. you can tell the difference between a mocasin and a water snake by the head. mocasin has a a big bulky head and water snake has a small head. if you were bitten by the snake. you will have to think quickely. this is what i would do and have personal encounter with when my buddy got bit by a mocasin. circle the area of the bite. about 4 inches above the bite, tie a tournequette. DO NOT TRY AND SUCK THE VENOM OUT!!!! YOU DO NOT WANT IT IN YOUR MOUTH. if you have a camera,
It is my understanding that you CAN suck out the venom because, as most people misinterpret it is VENOM not POISON. Venom must enter your bloodstream to be harmful as opposed to poison that will cause harm by swallowing. As a rule of thumb I assume EVERY snake is venomous until confirmed by an expert. Better to cut a trip short than to cut a life short.
Clean the area with water and soap if available. Wrap the bite site with a clean cloth. Splint the area if possible (arm or leg) to decrease movement. Get to a hospital.
Some form of electronic communications (cell phone, HAM, CB, etc) will help alert the hospital of the victims condition, and your ETA, so they may prepare for your arrival. You may be out of range where the incident occurs, but you should be able to establish communications near major roadways.
well tie a belt or something and pull tight above the bite to prevent venom from spreding dont make the person walk get help as fast as posible and if you have a snake bite kit i have 3 so i am se but if noe keep presure and get help dont suck out the poisin it will kill the person 10 times faster
get a pressure bandage on the limb as fast as possible to stop the progression of venom. the venom of a water moccassin will destroy tissue. if you slow down venom that s less flesh will be lost. lie them down call 911 request rescue
Being in NC I always go out with a snake bite kit along with my first aid kit. If you are bit the first thing is to not panic and go running to your car. Running will speed the poison through your system. Clean the area and use the snake bite kit. Try to identify the snake if you can. Other than that get to a hospital quickly.
i would ditch and run to the truck and take the truck to the bitten person so they wouldn't have to walk because the venom will move faster trough the body if they are active. And take them to the hospital and say they got bit by a water moccasin. great video and always be careful!
I'd tie off the area around the bite (tight, but not too tight) and try to get most of the poison out. Then (depending on what type of snake) quickly go to the hospital.
That sucka would have never made it to the hole.........lol

salebowwow 2 years ago 3
would killing it and taking it with you be a bad idea? if you didnt know what kind of snake it was that way you could have some one identify it for you since getting the RIGHT anit-venom is really important
surgicalshot 2 years ago
some say that is the way to go, how ever they use the same treatment for all bits, but if one bits me, or one of my kid's, its a dead SOB.
davideli7879 2 years ago
Cotton mouth, 1st tie your belt around your limb preventing to much serculation but remove it every about 10 mins so you dont lose the limb then do it all over again.
owned4thewin 2 years ago
Yes Cottonmouth, not a Copperhead.
No snake bit kit or suction, waste of time and money, ineffective, possibly more tissue damage.
aimsuxdoggydills 2 years ago
back in the 70's they sold snake bit kits, all outdoor mags, said they were the shit, turns out they were not... you seem to know your stuff, this guy try's hard, but I don't think he know much about snake bits.
davideli7879 2 years ago
Coghlans makes snakebite kits similar to those you're talking about and Sawyer makes the Extractor, which is a much more efficient suction device that can be used for insect bites and stings.
hot2warm 2 years ago
copperhead, also called cotton mouth?
Got a snake bite kit? Need suction! Doesn't Sawyer have a good sucker product?

There are no snakes in Hawaii. I have heard that you turnakit the affected limb if possible. I have no idea what you would do if you were bit on the main trunck of your body.

lvcoats74848 2 years ago 3
Patient should stay still and quiet. Clean the bite with soap or antiseptic. Keep bite area below the heart. Splint the affected area, or patient should at least refrain from motion of it.
MattWeird 2 years ago
Were that me? I'd have killed that snake. There are plenty of non-lethal snakes to kill rodents, insects, etc... I would have killed that lethal snake. You missed an opportunity. The only thing you can do is cut the wound, let it bleed some of the poison out and immediately apply a tight tourniquette with a belt, rope, or whatever you have to minimize the spread of the hemotoxin. Then you'd need to get to a major hospital as soon as possible. That's probably 90 minutes from you.
veritasfiles 2 years ago
thats a water moccasin , if you were to get bit on the ankle I recomend you try to squeeze some venom out and place a tourniquet in the middle of your knee and you ankle and one above your knee , keep your heartbeat down and get the hell out of there
OneWithGuns93 2 years ago
Do not put a tourniquet on unless you want to lose your limb. Unless you can get immediate help a tourniquet would cause severe damage to the tissue. Put tight wraps round your leg to reduce blood flow but don't cut it off unless you absolutely must. Damn OneWithGuns93, recommending to put "multiple tourniquets" on is not very good advice unless you meant just pressure wraps.
onsleeplessroads 2 years ago
first of all there are no poisonous snakes in the united states. Poison is injested. Our dangerous snakes are VENEMOUS, venom is injected, so unless you go around eating raw snake venom they are not poisonous

b1gje55e 2 years ago
pk, I agree with you on the difference between poison and venom, but snake venom isn't poisonous to ingest, It's just a protein. It isn't a good idea to eat it though, unless you're certain that you have no cuts in you mouth/throat and you don't have any ulcers.
vegtastic123 2 years ago
pk066, good observation on the difference between poisonous and venomous. Most people don't make the distinction. Nice to get the real 'skinney'! Thanks!

in this age, a good idea would be (assuming you have one) to take a pic of the snake with your cell phone's camera. might help a doctor save your life.
ZZOTH 2 years ago 4
Most poisonous snakes in America are vipers and can be identified by their triangle shaped head and slitted pupils. I think the one exception is the Coral Snake which can be identified by its red, yellow, black stripes. If red touches yellow, your a dead fellow. If bitten the most important thing to do is stay calm and get to a hospital.
mojdfiv 2 years ago
Water moccasin a.k.a. cotton mouth because a female can open her mouth under water and display a bright white area so that her young can find her easily in murky water.
Frequencitee 2 years ago
The difference between a boy snake and girl snake is... Boy snakes always stand up to hiss. Girl snakes sit down when they're hissing.

Oh, and kill the snake so it don't happen again.
Lillredneck 2 years ago
Cotton mouth, suck it up and walk to the car, then drive to the hospital. Use ice, smoke a cigaret and stay calm. Or dig a 6x6x3 foot hole and kiss your ass goodby.
Lillredneck 2 years ago
That's about right. The more you freak out, the quicker your heart beats--the quicker your heart beats that faster your blood carries the venom.
Manny4155 2 years ago
Wrap something above the bite to prevent the spread of venom, try not to raise your heart beat too much and seek medical attention asap.

RHADGEE 2 years ago
I have the opposite opinion. The only good snake is a Live Snake. I have left snakes alone that I see around my home because they are good for pest control. They eat rodents, insects, and other critters that can infest your home. Spiders are also good for pest control.

suck the posion out on the way to the hospital.

Nicotine does this as well, so I would probably have a smoke. hehe

SeanUSA1993 2 years ago
Grab it or hold it's head down with a stick.
Cut head off and gut. Skin it and wash it. Cut it in half right down the spine, like a fish. Fry up in a little oil with just salt and pepper.
Tastes like chicken.
Yankeeprepper 2 years ago 2
I am not to familiar with snakes in your area, but I believe that that is a cotton mouth, as several others have stated. As for treatment, I would tie something around my leg to restrict blood flow, to slow down the poison. Then I would walk, not run back to the truck, then drive to the nearest hospital. During this whole affair, it is important to remain calm, because if you get really worked up and scared, your heart will beat faster, causing the poison to move through your body faster.

wmp89 2 years ago
I would use a shoe string and maybe a string from a hat like you are wearing and tie off right above the bite. Then tie off right above the knee as tight as possible. Then I would make a cut around the bite and squeeze some of the venom out. If you can kill the snake then do so and take it with you if not don't waste time. Then I would get a walking stick and walk to the truck trying to stay off of the bitten leg as much as I can. Because blood will flow a lot faster the more you use it.

What a lot of people don't know is that a water mocasin and a cotton mouth are the SAME snake. They live all over the place here in Southern Ohio.
Turtleman38 2 years ago
Im no snake expert but my guess is cottonmouth (6th grade science:)
And if so, cottonmouths are not venomous but they do gunk up a lot of saliva and junk in their mouths when they bite, which typically leads some kind of skin irritation or infection.
So I'd say clean the wound thoroughly as possible, wrap it up and regardless of what type of snake, get to an emergency room as quick as possible. Better safe than sorry.
Trojanballer54 2 years ago
cont. try to take a clear picture of the snake. body and head especially. if it is just you and the victim. then you have to carry him to the vehicle if you can. but if there are 3-4 of you then take 2 long and sturdy sticks and take you shirts, pants whatever to make a stretcher. lay the vic on the make shift stretcher and then carry him as fast and as safe as possible to the vehicle. one u get to the vehicle lay him down and call the hospitol as soon as you get service. that is what i say.
tailgatethedipper 2 years ago
its a water mocasin. you can tell the difference between a mocasin and a water snake by the head. mocasin has a a big bulky head and water snake has a small head. if you were bitten by the snake. you will have to think quickely. this is what i would do and have personal encounter with when my buddy got bit by a mocasin. circle the area of the bite. about 4 inches above the bite, tie a tournequette. DO NOT TRY AND SUCK THE VENOM OUT!!!! YOU DO NOT WANT IT IN YOUR MOUTH. if you have a camera,
tailgatethedipper 2 years ago
It is my understanding that you CAN suck out the venom because, as most people misinterpret it is VENOM not POISON. Venom must enter your bloodstream to be harmful as opposed to poison that will cause harm by swallowing. As a rule of thumb I assume EVERY snake is venomous until confirmed by an expert. Better to cut a trip short than to cut a life short.

1 kill the snake and bring it so they can identify the snake.
2 solw blood flow with poison.

BLBMZ 2 years ago 4
Some form of electronic communications (cell phone, HAM, CB, etc) will help alert the hospital of the victims condition, and your ETA, so they may prepare for your arrival. You may be out of range where the incident occurs, but you should be able to establish communications near major roadways.

its a water mocosin or copper head
well tie a belt or something and pull tight above the bite to prevent venom from spreding dont make the person walk get help as fast as posible and if you have a snake bite kit i have 3 so i am se but if noe keep presure and get help dont suck out the poisin it will kill the person 10 times faster
redneckjwillo 2 years ago
Keep the victim as calm as possible.
Keep the bite lower than his heart.
If you have instant ice packs in your first aid kit, apply them to the area to help slow the flow.
A restriction cord may also help slow the flow. Tie it so it "dents" the skin, but not as tight as a tournaquet.
If you cant bring the truck in, youll have to carry the victim out, perhaps best on a (improvised) stretcher.
(cont)
MrBillTroop73 2 years ago
get a pressure bandage on the limb as fast as possible to stop the progression of venom. the venom of a water moccassin will destroy tissue. if you slow down venom that s less flesh will be lost. lie them down call 911 request rescue
911feltner911 2 years ago
