Simply beautiful. The loud but calm piano, his soft whispers, the intimacy of it. Just gorgeous. Out of all of Trent's work, this is one of the best things I think he's made.
Went out with a bomb. This song is sick, you can palp the darkness as he speaks of lights. Very intelligent, able to manipulate notes like no one. Using silences in his musical writing (des silences), don't really know what you call it in English but Trents' music was always good. I am going to see Alessandro. If you want to drive to Montreal, FEW TICKETS ARE LEFT. Telus Theater. Got my ticket almost 2 months ago.
Went out with a bomb. This song is sick, you can palp the darkness as he speaks of lights. Very intelligent, able to manipulate notes like no one. If you want to drive to Montreal, FEW TICKETS ARE LEFT. Telus Theater. Got my ticket almost 2 months ago.
This song has contributed to possibly the greatest idea I think I've ever had in my entire life. I had something happen to me last night that can only be described as an Epiphany. During this experience I kept playing this song repeatedly. All that I can say is that Trent's words, and the notes that he plays in this song in-particular holds something very powerful.
i think its about a girl on drugs, "Watching you drown" - Seeing you dying "I'll follow you down" - Strong statement of loyalty. He'll follow her anywhere. "I am here right beside you" - Self-explanatory "The lights in the sky have finally arrived" - This is the moment that death is coming (when you die, you supposedly see a light). "I am staying right beside you" - He will stay with her, holding her hand perhaps, right to the bitter end.
I love this song, it is him grieving as the flower of his dawn reaches dusk and he is left alone to night to anguish bitterly as part of his soul and love departs in echoes of what was., empty and hallow pacing through the cold corridors of desolation.
@p00ned0wned Agreed! That was my thought as well. He always was good @ double meanings- allowing the listener to form their own opinion (something he has gotten exceedingly good at over the years)...
This song, in my opinion, is about the death of a loved one. Imagine yourself at the deathbed of someone you love, it's inevitable, you see as their life slowly seeps away... But you have to keep on going. I really think this song is about that.
at the same time, "being dead" to other people can also mean out of a relationship, while one still loves the other, with no real connection, considering it is one sided. you can do nothing but watch as she loves other people, and you just sit there, wishing/thinking/finalizing thoughts. thoughts to help you live.
To me it's about how no matter what happens, even if we're all completely f*cked, he'll (or I'll, in this case- I'm covering it) stay by that certain person...
This is a masterpiece. Quite possible a classic on par with Hurt. The Swear I'm Here mix from Quiet even more so. NIN is at the point right now, like a lot of bands from the 90's, where they are no longer relevant in the MTV/Radio play sense but they still make incredible mind blowing songs that easily put any new group to shame. They've become underground darlings again.
I think this song could be about trent watching a girl ( maybe his wife ) go through the same depressions as he does and since he says lights in the sky he means there was a little hope for him in the end but now that his girl is going through all of this hes going to go through it again with her just to help her and because of his love for her. Its a beautiful song.
@yahman1245 because marilyn mansons a fat blundering clown with no dicernable talent and a few 2d philisophies. while NiN is something a whole lot more genuine
It's about loving someone who is destroying themselves..Watching them doing it..Knowing that after a point you can't help, but still wanting to be there, even as they drag you down with them.
@1lapmagic Could not have been stated any better. That is exactly the message, and I think it takes someone in those shoes to understand what he is saying...
I hope it's not over stepping any lines by saying Im sorry as I assume you have a personal knowledge of the feelings attached to such a situation.
Yeah, The Slip is a solid fucking album. I never hated on his new stuff, it just didnt vibe with me like the older stuff did. But this album is really good.
When i hear this song it makes me think of someone that the person in this song has someone he loves that is very ill. "Watching you drown, ill follow you down", he is saying he will be with her till the very end. and the "lights in the sky have finally arrived/waving goodbye" could possibly be the lights above the operation table turning on, and turning off as she dies.
i really like this song, though and all that could habe been is even more emotional imho, and don't forget we're in this together! it's not quiet, but for a long time could very relate to it and it became my favourite
for some reason, this is one of the very few NIN songs I can't get into. I don't really mind the live version, maybe it's just I'm not a fan of the recording.
I think that TR is simply talking about a woman, and the song is great!... but for some other reasons... i think... Is he talking about the "lights in the sky" of the blue beem project?... Since "Year Zero" was a science fiction album (remember "Capital G" an "Survivalism"?), I tough that he could possibly talking about blue beem or something like that.
This NIN song takes on a whole different meaning in the context of my Channel. "Watching you drown, I'll follow you down" with the piano is mocking my "ex" as he drowns in his own greed. I won't be drowning with him, that's for sure! Great song and dynamic lyrics! "I can't disapear"!
This has become one of my favorite NIN songs and albums...I've been with them since The Downward Spiral and i will stay with them until Trent decides its time 2 stop making music...NIN are still the shit...So happy that he's been making so many albums these past few years...I've never seen so much new NIN music come out so fast..I love it..
perhaps you are correct. however, if you look at trent reznors work as a progression of life through art, you can somewhat see the transitions of his emotions and experiences. i personally do not like all of nine inch nails newer things (all of the older, most of the newer, but i guess thats me) but you have to understand that not only is he a musician he is actually trying to better human life.. listen to his music! so, with that being said, .....
(part two) he is actually trying to grasp other audiences that are not necessarily drawn to the brash industrial/whatever genre you want to call it, sound... (hes perhaps drawing others in?) listen.. seriously.. he speaks, and not everyone listens. "no ones heard a single word i've said." sure its just my interpretation, but pair it with songs like "hand that feeds.."
(part three)and the fact that almost all the new music is downloadable for free.. (i mean he does have mad money, but...) something most institutions of music frown upon.. ah.. hopefully you know what i mean..
personally i find this a beautiful song that just shows one of the corners of the compound that is his brain.
This song gives me goosebumps. I wont even pick it apart and tell you why. It's just one of those songs you can listen to and understand it without even hearing the lyrics.
dude if you love it so much, you should hear the remix someone made.. it literally sounds like he is underwater.. and there are moments where the music builds up.. still soft though.. some drum beats.. fuck i wish i could... wait, if you want to i could fucking email it to you, if you dont mind giving me your email address...
I don't like this song. Sorry. Maybe some drums or a guitar to accompany it would make it better, but I just don't like it that much. I guess Trent was looking for a "Hurt" like track, but I just don't like this that much. Lyrics are beautiful though.
most of tent's songs have either been inspired by or about his addiction. sad story really but it would also be hard for any real artist to believe that none of his songs are about love. whether its intentional or not...different story, but relationships always seem to seep there way in. no matter the real meaning, nine inch nails is an amazing band with an amazing style.
Its amazing how Trent (or other artists) can write a song about something completely different than what its meant to be. Like the song COULD be about doing drugs with someone you care about but when people listen to it, they COULD think its a love song. Thats what I love about music.
i feel like its about sitting next to dying loved ones in the hospital."I am here right here beside you"and staying awake through the night"the lights in the sky have finally arived" "trying to stay awake just in case"then he/she dies and you just sit there.
My interpretation I will admit is a bit more literal with the 'watching you drown' part as the person I love has a fear of water/drowining
I basically see it as my loved one is drowing (either through suicide or accident as he can't swim) then I dive in with him and stay there holding him and drowning with him (doing that rather than saving him links to earlier in song) then 'the lights in the sky are waving goodbye' is the light from the surface getting further and further away.
sorry to burst your bubbles. your all welcome to interpret as you please, but trent has stated on many occasions that he has never written a love song and never intended to write one, which means that as far as what he was aiming for, love (or at least love for a woman) was not his intended goal. his former addictions seem like a far more plausible interpretation than any woman.
You need to check your Fragile booklet again, buddy. Right there, underneath "I'm Looking Forward To Joining You, Finally"... what's it say? Oh, what's that we got there? A dedication to one of his lady friends? It could be!
Um... no one considered that this song was about drugs? I mean, he's finally clean right? And "She's mostly gone, some other place. I'm getting by in other ways..." etc? I think it's about someone he knows still on them "try to stay away... just in case" and "try to justify the things I used to do" Come on people, it's obvious.
Hey man, thats what music is all about, you have your own interpretation based on what is going on in your life or what you are seeing in this world... dont disrespect someone elses opinion just because you dont believe thats what the song is all about. I bet trent would slap your ass if he heard you making fun of someone elses personal interpretation of HIS music.
shes mostly gone means the USA. im getting by in other ways means that everyone will have to fight to survive. the whispers in the ear are people right now telling you that it is going to happen but you never believed it. ive come to realise we all have you place means that we can do something to change it. time has a way to make it clear means that we will come out of it but it will take time. he cannot disappear and hide , or leave us here because he believes in the theory of the USA. FREEDOM.
I think this songs about the USA and about how its going to become a military state and about how even through he is famous... he is still going to be right beside everyone once they declare martial law and put us into concentration camps. He is not any different than anyone else and he will be right beside us. The lights in the sky represent the helicopters that will go hunting everyone down as they scurry into the bush. Lights are waving goodbye means that its goodbye for you as the kill you.
@CabooseBE Exactly the same with me. It's hard for me to explain how well the song describes my relationship with a bitch of a girl who almost ruined university life for me.
Wtf!!!! Trent did not even play lights in the sky in his fucking tour called LIGHTS IN THE SKY!!! WTF Trent!!! Why!!!! I wanted to hear this song so bad.... :(
Similarities between Trent and Mel Gibson: Both like to paint their faces and run around a stage screaming like madmen. Both have "a thing" for torture. Both have had alcohol problems in the past. Both are recluses that rarely see the light of day. Both are obsessed with violence. Both have videos out featuring the thunderdome. Both think the aliens are going to arrive at any moment. Both believe that "the end is nigh". Both of their careers are down the toilet. Both don't know how to sing.
it's about the narrator's attachment to a woman. he is emotionally uncertain and feels that by saving her, he can assign order to his own chaotic mind. the drowning is her downfall into whatever terrible situation she's in, and he follows her there. he sees the lights in the sky, which represent opportunity and chances for a great life, and watches them pass as he stays right beside her, desperately and vainly trying to fix her life and his own personal dysfunction.
1)Lights in the sky are something that are supposed to bring the happiness and good when they come to earth, but when the last note of this song hits in the beginning of Corona Radiata, those aliens or whatevers are landing to earth but it turns out that they are actually evil, bad, psycho, you know. not good.
2) This song is about someone dying and corona radiata is about what happens after death
The Slip is immaculate...this track being my favorite. Now that Ministry is done, I can focus most of my patronage on NIN being that Reznor was my other favorite artist. I feel he's surpassing his mentor Jourgensen in so many ways though...especially since The Fragile LP being that he really got me on those awesome instrumentals. However, Jourgensen's Twitch will forever be my number 1 record of all time...I think Reznor shares my adoration for it, in fact.
this song plus corona radiata is possibly the best two song combo i've ever heard. they complement one another perfectly: here is the human side, clinging to the last moments. then listen when the lyrics have stopped for good.
Nine Inch Nails is touring in a few days for the Lights in the Sky tour. Call your radio stations, your friends and leave comments all over the net announcing the LITS 2008 tour. Remember, despite Trent is massive he left his record label and NIN fans are now his publicists. The power is with the people.
wish i was there to see it i always see them in australia but am in london miss them since the year zero tour the sydney and melbourne show rocked......
My god the first time I heard this song I cried. The sheer beauty makes me ache...
How could someone make something so perfect and divine? The quiteness and defeated sound in Trents voice kills me! Oh god, this is such a great song, words can't begin to describe. I hope I don't cry at the concert...

He sure as hell has a way of making songs that just make you mellow out right after a fast paced ear fuck. Reznor is a fucking genius.
veloriumcaptain 3 years ago
Um... no one considered that this song was about drugs? I mean, he's finally clean right? And "She's mostly gone, some other place. I'm getting by in other ways..." etc? I think it's about someone he knows still on them "try to stay away... just in case" and "try to justify the things I used to do" Come on people, it's obvious.
The USA? Wtf, lol.
scruffydog101 3 years ago 8
Hey man, thats what music is all about, you have your own interpretation based on what is going on in your life or what you are seeing in this world... dont disrespect someone elses opinion just because you dont believe thats what the song is all about. I bet trent would slap your ass if he heard you making fun of someone elses personal interpretation of HIS music.

i would have never guessed the song was about USA

shes mostly gone means the USA. im getting by in other ways means that everyone will have to fight to survive. the whispers in the ear are people right now telling you that it is going to happen but you never believed it. ive come to realise we all have you place means that we can do something to change it. time has a way to make it clear means that we will come out of it but it will take time. he cannot disappear and hide , or leave us here because he believes in the theory of the USA. FREEDOM.
peewee62985 3 years ago
I think this songs about the USA and about how its going to become a military state and about how even through he is famous... he is still going to be right beside everyone once they declare martial law and put us into concentration camps. He is not any different than anyone else and he will be right beside us. The lights in the sky represent the helicopters that will go hunting everyone down as they scurry into the bush. Lights are waving goodbye means that its goodbye for you as the kill you.
peewee62985 3 years ago
And I thought I was pessimistic. Dang.
To me, it's about a certain girl. Fits a situation I'm in so perfectly, it's scary.
CabooseBE 3 years ago 23
@CabooseBE Exactly the same with me. It's hard for me to explain how well the song describes my relationship with a bitch of a girl who almost ruined university life for me.

i kind of got the feeling like "the lights in the sky have finally arrived" I got a sense of that he would die for whoever.
and by "the lights in the sky are waving goodbye" maybe that means he would always be by her side, even if she went to hell.
sewar461 3 years ago
For some reason I thought this song was about a Writer or a poet and his wife died... Something like that.

it's about the narrator's attachment to a woman. he is emotionally uncertain and feels that by saving her, he can assign order to his own chaotic mind. the drowning is her downfall into whatever terrible situation she's in, and he follows her there. he sees the lights in the sky, which represent opportunity and chances for a great life, and watches them pass as he stays right beside her, desperately and vainly trying to fix her life and his own personal dysfunction.

After all, I know, that in some way, I am staying right beside you.

This song is just fantastic.
Here are my theories:
1)Lights in the sky are something that are supposed to bring the happiness and good when they come to earth, but when the last note of this song hits in the beginning of Corona Radiata, those aliens or whatevers are landing to earth but it turns out that they are actually evil, bad, psycho, you know. not good.
2) This song is about someone dying and corona radiata is about what happens after death
great song thanks for uploadin'

The Slip is immaculate...this track being my favorite. Now that Ministry is done, I can focus most of my patronage on NIN being that Reznor was my other favorite artist. I feel he's surpassing his mentor Jourgensen in so many ways though...especially since The Fragile LP being that he really got me on those awesome instrumentals. However, Jourgensen's Twitch will forever be my number 1 record of all time...I think Reznor shares my adoration for it, in fact.

this song plus corona radiata is possibly the best two song combo i've ever heard. they complement one another perfectly: here is the human side, clinging to the last moments. then listen when the lyrics have stopped for good.
heartbreaking. they make this album, for me.

Two beautiful themes, Reznor Themes!!!!

This song had to be the product of Divine intervention.
Nobody thought he would ever top the Fragile and the Downward Spiral and he did with this song alone. UNFUCKINGBELIEVABLE
Trent has launched into eternal greatness with LIGHTS IN THE SKY,

My god the first time I heard this song I cried. The sheer beauty makes me ache...
How could someone make something so perfect and divine? The quiteness and defeated sound in Trents voice kills me! Oh god, this is such a great song, words can't begin to describe. I hope I don't cry at the concert...
