@elizabethduch yes every state in India has got a different way of draping a saree. Here in maharashtra one of the many states of India my granny used to wear a nauvari ( 9 yards). she used to wear it without petticoat. Hey, I heard about this product called Sari Saheli pleatmaker which is a tool to tie your pleats and palla. So, if you are a amateur like me and dont know how to wear a saree, just order this Pleatmaker machine from sarisaheli website and draping a saree becomes so much easier. The also have magnetic clips to hold the saree on their website which completely replace those safety pins which poke our hands and sarees. I really works, try it !!!!!

nice colorfull sari, I like it. "Great Great video, can you wrap sari within 5 minutes ? I do it in 5 mints only just bcoz of ------------ sarisaheli-dot-com.
you can do it also, Now I don't have to vast my energy, I use pleats"
Look at this new product Sari Saheli a pleat maker. It helps you wear sari in less than 5 minutes and without any help. Check more at sarisaheli website.
There is a great new tool that makes it easy to create the pleats for a clean look to the sari! It is called Perfect Pleats. Check out videos on YouTube by Perfect Pleats - The Quick & Easy Way to Wear a Sari.
My mother-in-law just sent me a prestitched sari from Pakistan. Thanks to videos like this....I can now say I know how to wear it. My next thing to accomplish is how to properly wear a paranda (braid with tassels). If anyone knows of a video or detailed instructions.....please send me the link. Thank you. :o)
When I finish the drape, I oftentimes find the pallau is way too long. What am I doing wrong? I'm only 4 ft 11, BTW...
Also, can somebody post a good vid of the Gujarati drape? The ones here on Youtube aren't the best. Also, I need to know how to pleat the pallau for Gujarati style.
I'm glad I saw this! I tend to pleat BEFORE I throw the pallu over my shoulder. This looks like it may hang better. Doesn't stretch awkwardly at the chest.
I wish there were more videos for sari styles beyond your average nivi. I am particularly interested in the long kaccha styles of Maharashtra, and I have yet to see these properly represented on YouTube. 'Tis most discouraging.
I think i'll buy a sari, i'm in a band called global groove, the music we play there comes from all around the world, so i think it would be nice to have a sari for performance.
You both look beautiful. When I was little I secretely wanted to be Indian just so I could wear the sari without looking like a poser. I still secretely do.
I love this lady! She has a kindness in her voice. The saree is for all women! Lighten up! I am a white woman who owns more than 300 sarees and when I am wearing the saree many indian women tell me how great It looks and how neatly I have draped it. I have never had anyone tell me anything adverse. Everything has its origin. The saree is fast becoming high fashion.
The Sari is a Hindu dress. some of you need to open a book and read. If a Japanese woman wore it tomorrow, it doesn't erase it's true origin which is of Hinduism. So the author of this video is 100% correct in noting that "A sari or saree is the traditional Hindu female garment"
Unfortunately, I'm from the Southeastern USA and it's not very diverse in my locale. I have to get 100% of my stuff from Ebay. There's nowhere to get petticoats, cholis, heck, not even an actual saree. I do see lengths of "sari fabric" in the cloth stores, couldn't one just buy 5 yards of it, hem the raw edges and wrap as a saree....most times the bolts are already 45 inches wide?
I plan to get many more; I taught myself to drape one and do a pretty good job.
I agree with you 100%. I live in FL, and I know in Orlando there is a large Indian community, but here in my town is mostly latin (like me!). The latina women think the sari is a "lot of fabric" (trapero in spanish) and I would like halloween if I wear one, but ohhhh, I'm dying to wear it!!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
excuse me, it was out of the Hindu religion that sari's came about. Study the Harapa Indus valley civilizations. Even the surviving ancient Hindu statues/gods wear saris. In Hinduism, it says that a piece of cloth pierced by needles is impure. That's why saris were and are still made from hand looms. Today you can say it belongs to everybody or whatever you feel, but its origins are found in Hinduism.
Jeez, relax. I never said saris DIDN'T originate from Hinduism. EVERYONE in India used to be Hindu, I know that. But that was a long time ago. Nonetheless, the sari is worn by Indian women of all religions. So I meant was that it's more accurate to call it Indian. What's there to argue about...
Excuse YOU but who the hell calls a sari a "Hindu" garment except people who don't know any better and Hindu fanatics? Hindu isn't even an Indian word, first of all, it was what Persians called Indians a long time ago. Back then there was no religion called Hinduism. But that was thousands of years ago and now, Hindu refers to the religion and people call saris INDIAN because sticking to these outdated words is just silly. Get over your silly technicalities.
Correct shit head, Hinduism isn't the true name of the religion. The true name of Hinduism is Shantana Dharma, of and belonging to the Dharmic religions. Life didn't start after Persia, so shut it. Shantana Dharma always existed there and still does today in the name of Hinduism. You might want to read some of its books whose names were never derived from Persians, like Veda, Gita, Purana, Upanishad, Mahabharata, Ramayanan, etc. Sari is a Hindu dress, a Shantana Dharman dress. go read some more.
abcosdgh, go to a temple and pray for yourself, because you have nothing in your brain. I agree with unnst, you are nothing but a fanatic retard. Take a chill pill.
And who cares if there's some inconsequential Hindu rule that clothes shouldn't be pierced by needles? How many Hindus even follow that? Most Indian women, Hindu too, pin their saris with safety pins.
inconsequential Hindu rule? So, those inconsequential rules of Islam that cover a woman from head to toe erasing her of identy is inconsequential? Some today don't even wear a hijab. But, tell Islam its rule is "inconsequential". You're obviously too imature to realize that nothing is too inconsequential when it affects millions of woman past and present. You're very imature. Just concentrate on what's for breakfast or dinner today.
I'm not saying all rules of Hinduism are inconsequential, but this particular rule is not central to the religion -- hardly anyone follows that. And yeah saris come from Hinduism but who calls it a Hindu garment anymore? The meaning of the word has changed, that was my point, so to keep calling it a Hindu garment is outdated. And when did I say Persia was the be all and end all of everything? I was just making a point -- "Hindu" did not always refer to the religion.
When some have the first intro to a sari, the description better say "Hindu garment", because that is what it is. In everyday usage though, we call it a SARI, okay? There was always Shantana Dharma, call it whatever you want, Hinduism, etc. It is the oldest mosaic of dharmic faiths in the world all under one umbrella Shantana Dharma, could care less for the world Hindu, so stop the petty argument.
Do you understand that I was explaining the ORIGIN of the sari and the principles that it was created under? I wasn't talking about modern day women and their pins. How Santhana Dharma is practiced today is another topic for another day. Do you know some Muslims don't wear Hijab today, does that make Islamic code about covering-up irrelevant? Don't reduce the origin of the sari or the principles it was born from, and the religion it encompasses, Shantana Dharma (Hinduism). You're outdated.
I agree. Before HINDU referred to the religion, it referred to the region beyond the [h]Indus river. Coincidentally, we still have a word that still applies for this meaning -- INDIAN. Exact same word, in origin . . . but a LOT less likely to be misunderstood over the internet. . . .
In short, it's not very USEFUL to say 'Hindu garment' -- and yet the term is not entirely incorrect, in the most technical sense.
I'm just waiting for someone to start talking about 'Gangetic garmets' next. :7
I've only recently discovered the sari. I mean, I'd seen it before, but didn't know anything about it. I assumed it was a stitched garment like any western dress.
Instead, I discover that it is a long rectangle, and is amazingly versatile. I am amazed by all that can be done with it. It is one of those rare garments which is fancy without being gaudy, sexy without being slutty, traditional without being obsolete.
