The reason lifesaver is taking so long: you have to swim sideways to the beach (parallel) until you get out of the rip, before swiming towards the beach. Dont try and swim against the rip, you won't win, and will drown with exhaustion.
i was with my family on vacation in new jersey. i went really far out and the waves were starting to get big and rough. i was trying to body surf back in, but i ended up getting pulled out so i start flailing my arms and the lifeguards came to get me. i went unconscious from the cold.
Rip currents are not infinite neither in lenght neither in size. They stop somewhere between 50-200m to the deep and many times 50-150m to the sides. The solution is (if there is no lifeguard) to let go by rip current into the deep. Then try to come out from at a different point. No panic. If there is lifeguard he should come out of the rip and come to the shore from a different point. Anywas that was a strong rip and could be lethal for one with no experiance and physical condition. Good job!
i was in a very tiny one once, luckily i was lke 30 feet from the ebach when I noticed it, so I didn't even dot he parallel thing, I just swam for it. Half the time I was running cuz it was so shallow. But it was cool.
as someone said earlier small rips are fun to ride...but when you mess with rips from hurricane swells with 8ft + waves, it scares the shit out of you. i bodyboard and i use fins and even then u are no match for the current. just let it take u out.
You cn't swim against a rip, the thing to do it let it take you to where you can go sideways and then swim in. People drown in these all the time, I am glad this boy got out.
It's a psychological thing. People freakout as they fly away from the beach. It happened to me when I was 12 in Cape Code. Luckily I knew all about rips and just rode it out and swam easily parallel to the beach. But it was pretty intense!
Many life guards don't come from the coast. They come to the beach to spend the summer. they are trained...by I bet a local wouldn't pull someone back in through the rip.
Why are they pulling them out THROUGH the rip current? Walk along the shore, until they are out of the RC... and then pull them toward shore.
Rip current can be fun if you know what they are and how to use them. As kids in Florida, we used to ride these things where the inland bay passes met the Gulf of Mexico.
You've never been in a strong rip in rough water, because I guarantee you that you will not like it. Granted, a rip that carries you out 30 feet or so in relatively calm surf might be exciting, but not for 100+ Feet, and especially not so when you have 6 foot seas.
He's pulling them straight in because he can, hence the line. I'm in Florida, and hell no rips aren't fun. I personally love some rough water for boarding, but being overpowered in it is not fun. It's especially not fun when you know that 300 feet out there's a sudden drop in depth, with a nearby reef, and Bull Sharks patrol the area on a regular basis.
Almost sounds like Adam Sandler behind the camera.

Tomuchcheese7244 1 year ago
@Tomuchcheese7244 don't even go in. always ask a lifeguard what to do/ where to swim. we are always happy to help, and even happier if it's on land.

Exactly, they are not the man eating things everyone makes them out to be. It's only dangerous, to the tourists who have never seen a beach before.
All you need to do is hear the basics from someone who knows, and you can use the rip currents for fun.
