@jeffhardywii "Charlie" is a fictional character from Stephen Cbhosky's book called "The Perks of Being a Wallflower", in the book charlie creates a mix tape for his friend. This song is included in the tape.
@dano555666 "The Hungry Ghost" actually, but you're right. When I heard the Cure song I knew it sounded familiar, but couldn't place it until I stumbled across this song again and heard the first 8 seconds. Ah well - if you're gonna riff off of other riffs, make sure the original is damn good. Robert got that part right, at least.
creating the perks of being a wallflower playlist now. read it four times in 2 weeks. i don't care what anyone says it's an incredible piece of literature that will no doubt be viewed as a classic in years to come. Chbosky created a masterpiece in charlie, a masterpiece that will live in my mind forever.
first you look so strong, then you fade away...wow... brings back good memories of a time with good friends and good music. one of my favourite bands and song of the 90s. Life was so much more simple back then. I miss it.
Even Ride can't believe, looking back, that the bitchy one-upmanship going on between the two singers was tolerated by their record label on their final release. One half of the CD was Andy Bell, one half Mark Gardiner. And it was as disappointing to the fans as the lousy "Birdman" single promised it would be. If only every song could have been Vapour Trail! (Or Dreams Burn Down)...
@mari5london very true mate, I was just feeling nostalgic, this takes me back to a Ride concert in Brighton in 1991! 20 years and it seems five minutes ago
A book can never make you a better person nor anything else. Only yourself, remember that and don't make everything out to change you just simply enjoy it.
i am always at awe while listening to the drums in this song. they are so simple, yet so fucking badass. most shoegaze doesn't have the drums in the mix so loudly, which makes nowhere even more unique
@nevershoutlindsay Well don't you think that it is a good thing that we are now exposed to this song when otherwise we wouldn't have had the priveledge of hearing it? Just because a book brought us here shouldn't give you the right to dictate who can listen to it and who can't. I'm sure Ride would be delighted to have a new wave of fans, dont you?
I remember reading Perks of Being a Wallflower long ago. There was a list of songs in the books I don't remember the context of right now, but I do remember discovering Ride and The Smiths ("Asleep") as a result. Probably led to me exploring a genre of music I would otherwise have been oblivious to .... this song is timeless. I fell asleep to it last night.
Finished the book in a few hours. All I have to say... wow. Incredible. This is the perfect song for the book in my opinion. And this is comming from someone who never reads. Thank you Charlie. I feel like im a better person just by reading your letters. My life is forever changed. Thank you.
@AFlockOfBeagulls Buddie. I readied in one interview of Andy Bell (vocal) where he telling that their inspiration for Ride music are some books, art, writers, 60's etc. So I will just say: You are on good track thinking about books. Their song Seagull is also inspired by same book title Seagull written by Jonathan Livingston. Greetings from me, Serbia!
Nevermind that last comment I made. Normally I hate people who go on youtube and say stuff like "Who else come here after hearing some dude sing this on american idol" or stuff like that. But I just read the wikipeadia article on The Perks of Being a Wallflower and I am off to borders now.
@xjapan1231 It is a classic, though I'd not categorize it as Brit-Pop. I know labels ultimately mean nothing...but I'd call it shoe-gaze. More influenced by The Bryds/Velvet Underground than The Beatles/Kinks.
I have always loved Ride, but i am glad that these youtube comments have introduced me to Perks. Like most of you i finished it in the first few hours i started, just couldn't put it down. If you are still in High school, it makes you love the book even more
I'm glad I'm not the only one looking these all up:) asleep by the smiths deserves being mentioned as much as it was for sureee if you didn't look it up do it now!
shoegaze in general should come with a disclaimer that says "LISTEN AT HIGH VOLUME OR GTFO" because i mean really, it's impossible to get any feeling out of it without turning it up
I was completely mesmerized by shoegaze when I discovered it in 1991 (with the release of Loveless). I was 19. Shoegaze/dreampop has been my favorite genre ever since, and now I'm almost 40. During that time I was fortunate enough to see Lush, Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine, and many others. Even got to meet Miki and Emma, have drinks with Simon Raymonde, and got a smile from Liz Fraser. Those were some of the best days of my life! Glad to see this style of music make it's comeback!
i saw Ride with Lush in Toronto way, way back (just when Nowhere was released). i went alone cause my friends had not realized the true brilliance of the music. Ride were fantastic and then saw them again with Slowdive.
bill seemed like more of a rapist in the story than aunt Helen to be honest. because acted too personal toward charlie. i kinda wish charlie was gay. um my favorite quote is: “Something really is wrong with me. And I don’t know what it is.” (137) yeah well i had to reread the part about aunt Helen molesting him cuz it wasn’t obvious at first. i love this book more than i love the book “the boy in the striped pajamas. This book reminds me of the movie “Mysterious Skin”

The Cure made a song that sort of rips this off, the riff kinda alot. "The Holy Ghost" from 4:13 dream.
Kinda weird, I wonder if Robert did it unconsciously cause he just loves this song. Guy is getting old and a bit batty :)
