I agree about the background and bullets blending together, but I wouldn't call it a bad thing for there to be a lot of bullets on screen. More like an acquired taste sort of thing, since I love that kind of manic action. Although, this is not much compared to what's available. Makes me wonder how you'd react to Ikaruga (technically a NGC port), Castle of Shikigami 3, and Ultimate Shooter Collection. Although, you can shield yourself in Ultimate Shooter Collection's games.

Either way, that's not entirely true. There IS a bit more strategy involved than your standard shooter, but danmaku (Oh, god, shoot me now) based games usually have some sort of saving grace, like really tiny hitboxes for the player (on DeathSmiles 2, [DON'T JUDGE ME!] for example, the hitbox was a pixel wide) or smart bombs that clear the bullets if worst comes to worst.
