  • there kinda like power chords :)

  • so an octave is two notes which are 8notes apart

  • @ncripzx Yes, 8 scale degrees apart. E and E for example. E on the open low E string and E on the 2nd fret of the 4th string are an octave apart. On the guitar fretboard, that would be the equivalent of 'up 12 fret tones'. twitterDOTcomSLASHstudyguitar

  • Ment vid

  • Good bid could you do the same one but better Video as in the quality of the video not what you where saying thank

  • Great video; this guy rocks!

  • try guitarmanual.typepad.com for guitar instruction ebook and videos

  • Good lesson. Now I know what a Octave is. Funny I've been playing them for years but never made the connection.

  • I really like your video. Your video has taught me the most about octaves. You do a lot more explaining!!! thanks!!!!!

  • thanks a lot man, very clear easy to follow. thanks a million

  • is it true for some octaves you don't mute the middle string?

    example;

    D-7

    A-0

    E-5

  • WHAT'S UP GOOD PEOPLE - Haha, scared me too, Syn295!

  • His ninth harmonic looks like a 12, 24. Lol.

  • This is great i get it!!

and that riff at 4:30 sounded so much like machinehead by bush!

  • fantastic

  • ima start throwing those octaves in the pentatonic minor scale

  • auu ra igriala uceb :D:D:D

  • thanks for the vid my i have to use somthing else because sound is bad on my pc

  • i

    LiKE

    YOU

    :D

  • Thanks Dave you rock I have been playing octaves for years just never new it. Much respect for the lesson. Thanks for your time and your good will. If I ever have any money I will definitely be helping you Dave thanks again buddy.

  • I have been using Jam-O-Rama. net and they really have alot more fluid lessons then this..makes it much easier to learn.

  • ahhh my freaking ears!

  • U gave me a Heartattack ..i'l take the revenge...lol

  • little loud bud lol he he

  • WAZZAP,GOOD PEOPLE!

  • so let me get this straight... so basicly you are plaing a note or chord you skipping the middle string right? like if it was 3rd fret on the 6th string then you would skip the 5th string andpalm mute it then you play the 5th fret on the 4th string.

  • yes, that is correct.

  • god the beggining kinda starteled me lol

  • HELLOOOOO XD

  • 12 notes in western music (except germany)

  • only 12 notes in western music?

    errrr...

  • holy shit!!! my ears!!!

  • LearnGuitarToday.yolasite(DOT)com

  • whats up with his fretboard? he's got double dots on the 7th and the 12th

  • holy crap the begining scared the crap outta me

  • ditto, shouting doesn't work with me. on to the next

  • lol me to i screamed

  • lol, me too, my speakers were LOUD too.

  • @Syn295

    same hahahaha

  • this lesson really sucks!!!

  • I just can`t watch this you should explaint than play it and so on don`t play and talk people are confused...jeeees

  • You should go over your video before posting.

A few facts missing here- posted by others below.

Learn the difference between notes and tones.

    good luck !

  • Do octaves have anything to do with when people say for example "the key of E"? I don't understand what this key of whatever thing means.

  • the key is the first note played in a song. it helps out when you have a bassist or another instrument so you all play it in the same key and it sounds right.

  • Keep in mind there are 12 notes as you half to count the half steps or semi-tones until you repeat, there are only 7 notes in a major or minor scale until you repeat. An octave is 12 notes higher then the original note or 7 notes higher in a scale. Keep in mind I'm not counting the root note. Learn music theory before you bash someone :P

  • its 8 notes after. not 12.

    FAIL!

  • e-f-f#-g-g#-a-Bb-b-c-c#-d-eb-e

  • major scales have 7 notes so 8 notes in the scale after would be an octaves yes but there are 12 notes on the guitar. an open E has an octave on the 12th fret E string. so 12!

  • shows what you know...

  • U failed... Black Keys(Piano) is a note.... PHAILED : (

  • Sorry....you need a better quality mic and lower the fader by 10db...should clean up.

  • is that a martin d 28....nice....

    give it to me..haha

    cheers

  • Great lesson. Thanks David!! Helped a lot.

Did anyone else pick up that he played the melody for Machinehead by Bush at the end?

  • Too much talk...not enough action...play some EXAMPLES of octaves in songs, so we can see how it sounds...then TALK about it

Happy New Year and THANKS for the video

  • Check out learning Blackbird by the Beatles. It's played in eighth's. Not octaves but sorta the same deal. Nice song too. one of my first.

  • wow i fucking jumped in the beginning when he was like " wazzap goot people!!?" i had fucking high volume omg but great lesson anyways !

  • Haha, same here man.

    Made me jump.

  • lmao his other video was super low volume compared to this scary shit

  • Well it got me too.....

  • Same :D

  • same here

  • thx, helped me. i was playing the guitar for 2 1/2 years now but this really helped me thx. XD

  • hes going into a hell of a lot of detail

  • are the strings supposed to be hard to press down?

  • They usually are hard to press down at the beginning, also, some acoustic guitars can be hard to press down. But keep practiciing, and in no time, you'll have no trouble at all!

  • hahah blacknOte samething happened to me x.X

  • WHOA! when he said "whats up good people" in the beginning, it scared me shitless cuz i had the volume high. loll

  • i no he yelled that out!

  • @bIacknoTe hahaha, same here lol

  • thanks alot dude =D

  • Oooh this is so tricky...

  • You guys are graet

    keep the good job.

  • I got a masheen hed! :P Good lesson David, rock on !

keep up the good work :)

  • ur great

  • its a hard one? or im very beginer yet?

  • can u play some metalica and magnum plz i cant sed anemail it wont let me but could u do some lessons on them or could anyone on youtube email the next level guitar for me if they dont read this.

  • is that standard tuning?

  • the video lesson is in standard A440 tuning

  • Usually they mention it when they tune to Eb or Drop D or any other alt. tuning.

  • miss you guys at next level.....keep on rockin good people

  • I miss your song lessons :(

  • you guys kick an infinite amount of ass

  • cherub rock by pumpkins is a good example

  • My question is why are daves old lessons not allowed but everybody elses on youtube are???If the standards set against dave are for everyone than there are hundreds of lessons that must be pulled down.Makes ya go"hmmmmmmm"

  • Nice one Dave! This lesson ROCKED! Keep on rockin'! One note on the octaves, think of a 12 string guitar, the string notes are an octave apart, so if you've ever played a 12 string guitar, this is basically what one will sound like.

  • WeirdAl, I like your spin. Made me think... and realize. doh. Yeah.

  • can you do a lesson on the dude from godsmack (forgot his name)

  • I second the previous comments. I quit guitar lessons two years ago because they were "too teachy". Most of us hacks just want to play a few popular songs. I hate that you guys can't teach the way you use to be able to teach. Anywho's, thanks for the lessons.

  • Dave, I know you are doing what you can, and these are helpful lessons for sure. But are you ever going to be able to teach songs like you used to ? Those were great and could get you playing something cool, quick.

  • go on google videos - some are still there

  • Very useful lesson! What's wrong with the audio quality though? It's usually much better in your videos.

  • a very useful lesson - thanks

  • how about a Billy Gibbons inspired / ZZ Top Lesson. he dose what he calls a 1 & 5 blues riff that sounds really cool. I cant seem to reproduce what he is doing. can you help ? Paul

  • ur new videos are awesome, but what happened to ur song lessons?

  • DO SOME STYX PLEASE!!!

  • once again excellent lesson, but i dont know if its my side or yours but the sound wasnt up to the usual standard.
