@ncripzx Yes, 8 scale degrees apart. E and E for example. E on the open low E string and E on the 2nd fret of the 4th string are an octave apart. On the guitar fretboard, that would be the equivalent of 'up 12 fret tones'. twitterDOTcomSLASHstudyguitar
Thanks Dave you rock I have been playing octaves for years just never new it. Much respect for the lesson. Thanks for your time and your good will. If I ever have any money I will definitely be helping you Dave thanks again buddy.
so let me get this straight... so basicly you are plaing a note or chord you skipping the middle string right? like if it was 3rd fret on the 6th string then you would skip the 5th string andpalm mute it then you play the 5th fret on the 4th string.
the key is the first note played in a song. it helps out when you have a bassist or another instrument so you all play it in the same key and it sounds right.
Keep in mind there are 12 notes as you half to count the half steps or semi-tones until you repeat, there are only 7 notes in a major or minor scale until you repeat. An octave is 12 notes higher then the original note or 7 notes higher in a scale. Keep in mind I'm not counting the root note. Learn music theory before you bash someone :P
major scales have 7 notes so 8 notes in the scale after would be an octaves yes but there are 12 notes on the guitar. an open E has an octave on the 12th fret E string. so 12!
They usually are hard to press down at the beginning, also, some acoustic guitars can be hard to press down. But keep practiciing, and in no time, you'll have no trouble at all!
can u play some metalica and magnum plz i cant sed anemail it wont let me but could u do some lessons on them or could anyone on youtube email the next level guitar for me if they dont read this.
wow i was very surprised you guys did a foo fighters interview thats awsome theyre my second favorite band do you guys think you could do a john frusciante vid too thanks u guys are awsome
My question is why are daves old lessons not allowed but everybody elses on youtube are???If the standards set against dave are for everyone than there are hundreds of lessons that must be pulled down.Makes ya go"hmmmmmmm"
Nice one Dave! This lesson ROCKED! Keep on rockin'! One note on the octaves, think of a 12 string guitar, the string notes are an octave apart, so if you've ever played a 12 string guitar, this is basically what one will sound like.
I second the previous comments. I quit guitar lessons two years ago because they were "too teachy". Most of us hacks just want to play a few popular songs. I hate that you guys can't teach the way you use to be able to teach. Anywho's, thanks for the lessons.
Dave, I know you are doing what you can, and these are helpful lessons for sure. But are you ever going to be able to teach songs like you used to ? Those were great and could get you playing something cool, quick.
how about a Billy Gibbons inspired / ZZ Top Lesson. he dose what he calls a 1 & 5 blues riff that sounds really cool. I cant seem to reproduce what he is doing. can you help ? Paul
once again excellent lesson, but i dont know if its my side or yours but the sound wasnt up to the usual standard. Anyhooo please tell me the live lesson went well I had to work and couldnt be on for it, but I think it is a great idea and I am filthy that I missed it... rock on guys and nieces and little doggies
Thanks again Guy's, your the best. I was wondering if you found out the problem you had with the sound thursday night when you went Live? I was thinking you didn't have enough "Bandwith" for the stream. ????
there kinda like power chords :)

Do octaves have anything to do with when people say for example "the key of E"? I don't understand what this key of whatever thing means.

the key is the first note played in a song. it helps out when you have a bassist or another instrument so you all play it in the same key and it sounds right.
