Thank you for this. I was confusing this with the knitted cast on, and inserting the right-hand needle incorrectly. Now I can make a very neat edge!

It does matter which method you use sometimes, if a project needs a specific method, the pattern will tell you so. As with many different crafts, you will find the one that works best for you.

For any knitting project one undertakes, does it matter what cast-on method they employ?

Good Question. I have seen at least 3 different ways to "Cast On"...I am guessing it doesn't matter, but it would be good to know :)

The simplest cast-on method is not very stretchy. This, Cable c-o, gives the garment more elasticity on the first row.
